Three Cheese Beef & Pork "Meatballs"
Toasted Garlic Tomato Sauce, Parmesan
Braised Chickpeas, Guanciale, Basil Pesto
The food was fantastic and the service was great. However, the acoustics are bad and the restaurant is very loud!
We were on a long weekend trip to San Antonio and realized we had never visited Battalion for dinner. We had an early reservation since we booked late the same day (Saturday) and were seated immediately. Wait staff was very good. Described dishes very well and helped us make our dinner choices. Food was delicious. Presentations were lovely and flavors were excellent, if different than we expected. We tried the olives and the meatballs (they are not round and are excellent) for starters. We each had a pasta dish for segundi which was not necessary as the portions are quite large for a non-entree dish. Both dishes were quite good. For our entree we decided on the pork saltimbocca. This is a dish that I was quite surprised about since it was a large, thick pork chop instead of the more traditional pounded thin slice of pork, completely wrapped in prosciutto with fresh sage under it. The meat was perfectly cooked and was absolutely delicious. We'll definitely visit Battalion again on another visit to SA.
Sloan was our server. Was knowledgeable and helpful. Loved the eggplant parmesan; a must have and pleasant surprise to everyone who sampled it. Pork chop was delicious as was the steak.
The food is a familiar staple of mom and pop Italian restaurants. I felt the price was exorbitant for the uninspired yet traditional comfort food served. I feel one can find the same quality dishes at other, less pompous environments. It is a beautiful space. Do go if you’re into dining in a beautiful environment and care little about the chef’s creativity.
The spinach dumplings and the lamb chops were phenomenal
Food was exceptional and service fantastic. Only gripe is wobbly table.
Excellent on all counts! So good we went back the next night also.
Wonderful atmosphere & service! The food was outstanding. We will certainly be returning.
Last date before brain surgery
Third time here and loved it as per usual. Went here on our first date, then our first anniversary and now just a fancy date night with my lady. Highly HIGHLY recommend the meat balls!
The sun was shining right into my eyes for about 10 mins and I had to wear sunglasses. At 7:00 pm which was strange. The service and food was amazing!!’ Everyone at our table enjoyed themselves and it truly was a wonderful memory we have. We will be back
We enjoyed our evening dining experience at Battalion. The food and drinks were amazing. After we were seated a staff member brought us water and then we had to wait awhile for another staff member to come by to begin taking our order. I noted on the reservations that it was a birthday celebration and unfortunately they did not acknowledge it.
Had not been back to this place in over a year so we were looking forward to the same great experience from the first time. Our table was next to the lower level bar and the restaurant was at about 80% occupancy. The food and service were excellent as expected however the noise level was a bit too high to have a comfortable table conversation. The building is an old fire station with concrete walls and floors so sound is bouncing off everything. This really became annoying as the evening went on and capacity reached close to 100% as we could not even hear the waitstaff when they came around and asked about the food or refills on drinks. What didn't help is the waitstaff is required to wear masked so as appreciative as this was for us having them wear a mask, it made it even harder to hear them because of the room noise level. No fault here, just need to adjust to this. Prefer this to not being able to eat out. Next time I would opt for a table in the patio if the weather is nice.
Worst experience. It was my moms birthday. Made reservation well in advance for outdoors. Texas as Texas does had a cold front. They didn’t have enough heaters for outside reservations so we requested to be seated inside. They said they had no tables even though we offered to wait and there were 7 empty tables on the first floor alone. So I was scrambling on a Saturday night to find another spot for my mothers birthday since she came to visit me. Thank God for La Frite being able to squeeze us in and accommodate. I won’t be going back to battalion for a very very long time. Very poor customer service and they have zero rain plan so don’t book outside unless you’re willing to have to go somewhere else to eat.
10/10 - look no further if you’re craving excellent Italian food. We had a wonderful meal - would highly recommend the spinach dumplings, pork saltimbocca, and veal marsala. Focaccia bread and garlic butter would good, but would pass on it the next time around. Great service and ambiance. Best meal we had on our trip to San Antonio, hands down!
The food was very good and so was the service. The place is quite interesting since it is an old fire station so it is full of character.
This place used to be an old fire house really cool
We sat outside to forgo the wait and noise level inside. It was a breezy night to say the least but we came prepared with jackets and really dug the background of the Hemisphere and downtown San Antonio in the early evening.
The waiter took 15 minutes to greet us and then didn’t recommend the drinks and dishes we came excited to try. He gave us the wrong drinks to start with, didn’t know much about the menu and was visibly frazzled so I didn’t want to make his night worse. The dish he did recommend, the spinach dumplings, were bland and chewy. We had really high hopes for the restaurant after seeing it in SA Current as the cover of a story for restaurants that are above and beyond but we’re grounded quickly with the food quality and service. My bf and I have both worked good service and know it’s a tough gig and I always try to be easy and generous as a customer, we still tipped but will not be returning.
We had drinks at the bar and then an awesome meal. It does not get better than that!
While the food was excellent and the service was attentive I was disappointed in the behavior of the server in COVID times.
Every time he spoke her would shove his fingers up under his mask to pull it out to speak to us. Not only did that make the mask completely ineffective, it contaminated his hands repeatedly.
Management needs to train on proper mask wearing and overall hygiene for sure.
We ate here when it first opened and everything was fabulous.....Not so much this Saturday. They sat us next to a large, very loud group. We ordered veal and fish and neither one was very tasty...the veal was rubbery and the fish very fishy.
Ambiance, food,, wine and desserts are exceptional. Will definitely return !
The entire experience was exceptional, from appetizers to the best tiramisu, period. If you're considering eating here, do it. You won't be disappointed.
Awesome place with a great atmosphere. Highly recommend.
2nd time going to Battalion. Food was excellent but portions are very small. Drinks were on point! Had a rye old fashioned. Service was also very good. But the noise level was ridiculous, could barely hear my wife talk.. I understand its a hollow, concrete building but it made want to rush out of there as soon as we were done. Only reason, I gave 3 starts in some areas were, potion size not that im a big guy but for the price and the noise level.
Great food & wonderful service!
such a unique experience - an old firehouse serving some of the most delicious and unique Italian dishes in the city...on the coolest plates! it's a must visit! grab a table upstairs so you can see out on all of Southtown/Downtown area - especially the view of the Tower of Americas!
Food and service was exceptional!
We last visited 2-3 years ago and food quality and selection was not nearly as good. Octopus was super fishy and inedible and the rest of our food was mediocre. Doubtful we will return.
Celebrating an early birthday dinner. Excellent food and very modern decor and ambiance. Service was delightful.
As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by the lovely host. She was very welcoming and showed us to our table. Our waiter was very helpful and explained the menu with great detail. He also made some wonderful suggestions. The food exceeded our expectations! It was plated beautifully and full of flavor. Not to mention the superbly made cocktails we enjoyed throughout our dinner. It was our first time here and it definitely won’t be our last!
It was such an amazing dining experience the food was delicious
I took my wife to Battalion for her birthday and she loved it. We will definitely be coming back!!
It was overall a great meal with great service in the challenge of COVID environment.
Our server was excellent. Scott did a great job.
Food was outstanding. We would recommend it to friends.
Great place, 3rd time I've gone there and is always so tasty and great ambience!
Food was cold b/c of draft, forgot appetizer, dirty plates sat on table too long, restaurant too cold
Food and service was great but the noise level prevented me from carrying on a conversation with my dinner partner. I won’t return
We've had good meals at Battalion in the past, but our most recent visit was very disappointing. Beef & pork "meatballs," potatoes, bucatini carbonara, and pork saltimoboca were all *very* salty. (The polenta that accompanied the pork and an order of focaccia were delicious.) Service was disorganized and inattentive, with food delivered without plates and cutlery on two different occasions. Outdoor tables were set up too close together for dining during the current pandemic. We won't be visiting Battalion again.
