Basil is the realization of the lifelong dream of Henry and Chai Eang, brothers who immigrated to the United States from turbulent 1970s Cambodia. Since opening the first Basil in Charleston to rave reviews, several trendy locations have followed over the last dozen years. The atmosphere is fine but the waiter, while pleasant, was a bit weird. He spoke so low that we couldn’t hear him and we were finished with our appetizer way before our entree order was taken. I can understand if it were busy but it wasn’t. Also, the lady spraying the tables with some substance sprayed me and the man at the other table. It even got in his water. Don’t think he was very happy about that. The meal I wanted I couldn’t even get because they were out of it or whatever the waiter said. The pad Thai was not good. The noodles tasted as if they had been sitting under a hot lamp for an hour and there was not much of a taste. The wonton appetizer was decent.

Thai Basil is my favorite restaurant in Greenville. The food is always delicious and the ambience is urban upscale, quiet but usually active clientele. I had my wedding rehearsal dinner here last year. They did an awesome job and I think everyone enjoyed it. I have a severe food allergy and they’ve always been very responsible about keeping me safe.

This is a place I’ve been to many times but this trip was a little disappointing. Lots of little details missing that really added up. No draft beer of any kind and no explanation as to why. No Vienna lager which is my favorite and server not sure if they are out or will no longer carry. The chicken in both dishes were bland and dry so the chicken fried rice and the vegetable delight really missed the mark. Our appetizers were okay at least. Hope this was a one off because I do love the place.

Great food, great service, great ambience. This is a really nice Thai restaurant - felt at home the minute we stepped in. Had the shrimp rolls, shrimp salad and a couple of main dishes. Good wine list also. Will be back!

Long wait for food (place wasn’t too busy) and food was cold and mediocre. Probably will take my business elsewhere next time I want Thai food.
