Homemade Chips and Salsa
roasted anaheim chile, choice of chicken or carnitas, stuffed with jack cheese, on top of a mexican rice pilaf, dressed with chile guajillo sauce, tomatillo sauce, cilantro lime sauce, topped with cotija ranch
grilled chicken breast, cheese, avocado sauce, chipotle cream, pico de gallo
Service was poor and it took at least 45 minutes to receive our food after it was ordered.
Great Place!! Good and service were both amazing!! Will definitely be back!
Wow, has this once a gem of a restaurant slid down hill since my last visit pre-Covid. The saving grace was our server who did her very best to accommodate me and the friend I was with. He ordered the roasted chicken and I, the carnitas chile relleno. The chicken was overcooked and dry...yes, even the dark meat. The chili relleno itself a steamed slimy texture because it wasn't roasted before assembly. Then it was served split open piled with melted cheese and the carnitas slopped served over a heaped pile of rice. Nothing near a propper batter coated and browned relleno. The presentation of both plates looked like they were assembled quickly with no forethought or finesse. Neither had any redeamable flavor.
We each ordered two margaritas; the first to refresh, the second to help us not be so bothered by the food quality. But our second drink tasted nothing like the first with the mixed flavors completely out of balance.
Then, there's the presentation of the restaurant itself; the asthetics. We were seated in a booth in a back room with the make-shift office and kitchen door adjacent. Its not a proper place to serve. What was once a clean, bright colorful dining room looks tired and unkempt, including a walkway to the restroom now used for storage with empty liquor boxes crammed into shelves along the way.
Needless to say, we won't be back. And unfortunately for this once upon a time favorite, word will spread.
Amazing food, service, and people. And I love that they’re pet friendly. My husband and I are always looking for places to dine that welcome our fur babies too. They hit all points!
Excellent and prompt service, from the moment we sat down to the very end. Drinks were made just right and brought out quickly.
Great! The food was delicious and our server was nice
Nice patio area and atmosphere inside. The Brazil Bowl was delicious.
Staff was sooo good to us! The food took a little bit to come out but they were busy so it’s understandable. The food was also DELICIOUS! Will definitely add it to my list of SD spots to revisit!
Food and staff were amazing! Will be back to try their happy hour menu.
This restaurant came highly recommended. Just in town in San Diego for a few days and wanted quality Mexican food. This place did not disappoint. Fantastic ownership and a really cool vibe. Authentic flavours and fantastic drinks. Very engaging servers that answered our questions and made for a wonderful experience. Will definitely go back when in town
So good!! Great margaritas and food!
A fantastic birthday celebration! Kyle our server was really helpful and fun. Everything was fresh and we are going back.
Great food that completely filled us up, and the margarita flights were so fun! We all ordered something different and we all were very happy.
What a great experience. The cucumbers were an incredible surprise! The chipotle wings were amazing! Great service.
Love that they provide vegan and gluten free options! While the waiter was very nice, the service was very slow. Had a great time here though!
One of my go-to employee luncheons. Love the food and staff.
Outdoor dining is really nice.
Service was great !
Great food and service! Definitely try the margaritas!
We arrived at 730pm for our reservation on time and after 830 we had barely been sat and never got food or drinks delivered to the table. It was for a close friends 40th birthday. The general manager was drunk the entire time. I am thoroughly embarrassed and suggest they be removed from this platform. I will continue action to make this incredible wrong right again.
My daughter arrived in San Diego for a one week visit, after two years apart. I thought that since she was arriving on May 5, it would be fun to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. BIG MISTAKE. I have always avoided going to restaurants on holidays like Valentine’s Day, Thanksgiving, Mother’s Day, etc., thinking I would have poor service and bad food. We proved my theory at Barrio Star. Our table was right next to the kitchen, and my husband got hit numerous times by the swinging doors. We waited 15 minutes for someone to take our drink order, and waited 30 minutes for the drinks to arrive. In all that time, no-one came to take our food order. When we finally ordered, it was fairly simple. One nachos and two taco plates with three types of tacos per plate. When the food finally arrived, The tacos were almost unidentifiable. Shrimp taco, good. Fish taco, good. Spicy chicken and steak unrecognizable by appearance or taste. Nachos okay, but thrown together…not layered. Chips were piled on the bottom and toppings were lumped together on top. Also, noise level was horrific because of the holiday crowds! Not coming back!
We love coming here! The food is fantastic and the margaritas are the best in town.
Nice patio and they accommodated us quickly. I appreciated how nice the staff was and very grateful the host let us sit at the table I asked for. Thank you!
Horrible experience, hostess was extremely rude.
They were short staffed and it didn’t hurt the service at all, they hustled and did a fantastic job.
We have not been to Barrio Star in a while. We went to participate in Dining Out For LIfe. The food was fantastic and our server (April) as a delight. We are already talking about when we might go back!
Overall food and service was good. I didn’t really appreciate the bartender pulling her mask down and biting her nails and rubbing her nose and then serving drinks up without washing her hands.
The food was good, the service from our waiter was not good. It seemed like he was at his own personal social and just kept talking to people instead of working and taking their orders. I understand hospitality but this guy was crossing the line and he was taking a very long time to help us and get us our drinks. At one point he straight up said he forgot. The people in the back/cooks and bussers were very nice and there was another waiter who was very nice too, he is a shorter Hispanic man that also kept trying to find our waiter LOL. anyway probably will come back I just hope the service is better.
Service was absolutely amazing and along with the food and drinks!
I hadn’t been here in YEARS and it’ll definitely go back into our regular rotation. We had a plate of three tacos and the salad (which is more like a ton of protein with some lettuce on the side). I’ll be back to have the Brazilian bowl with coconut rice, which used to be my go to.
They were more than hospitable, very friendly the food is amazing we got the beef tacos and the spicy chicken tacos.
Great food, ambiance and service.
First time there. We liked the location, quick availability, and the food.
Food and drinks were great. This is a great restaurant for a causal night with friends. Loved the atmosphere and very friendly staff.
Great ambiance, great food & great culture overall. I’m not a newbie to Barrio Star and I’ll be returning for more great experiences!
Always over the top. Great food, even better service.
We went for Sunday lunch and enjoyed the burnch menu. The portions were perfect and most importantly their corn tortillas are the best! We ended up going back later in the day for margarittas for happy hour!
Great experience, great drinks
Great food. Lots of good choices. Wait staff was very friendly.
Tortillas were made with love! Such an extensive drink menu. Loved the chips and salsa! Affordable and easy lunch, brunch, drinks, and dinner spot! April is a true gem.
Amazing good, amazing service. The waiter was so enthusiastic, knowledgeable and efficient. We had a rather large group and Barrio did not disappoint! Delicious food and great vibes-will definitely be returning.
