Overly pretentious but not particularly good for spanish food. Everything was on the sweeter side, without much flavor. Drinks were OK. Service was fine. Overall just OK.

This review is somewhat colored by the fact that the electricity in Hayes Valley went down before we could get past the cocktail and a plate of Serrano ham. But I was with an old friend, the wine was pouring and we had a good evening. The staff was very warm, and they let us hang out even though the kitchen had closed.

We enjoyed the food overall, but the seafood paella was rather skimpy on the seafood. We'll go again, but stick to the small plates and tapas.

We've been here several times over the last 2 years. Service has fallen off - plates taken prior to finishing or plates not taken at all. Food choices seem to be fewer. Overwhelming use of oil and overly hot spice tend to overpower the flavor profile the Chef was intending. Doubt we'll try it again.

Disinterested hostes, long waits to get menu, and then no happy hour menu unless you ask for it, no explanation of the oysters your eating, some dishes come out pipping hot (pattatas) some lukewarm ( beefsteak), flan dessert took almost 30 minutes to emerge from the kitchen. When you show up before 6 and its empty, you feel like you could have gotten a bit more attention.

This was the second time my mother and I dined at Barcino. The first time we sat at the bar and although the food and service were wonderful, because my mom is wheelchair bound due to a stroke, it was a bit too tight. We were walk ins at 5 p.m. and because I didn’t ask for a table, the restaurant was not at fault. The second time we dined at Barcino was absolutely wonderful, in all aspects. The staff went out of their way to make sure my mother and I were comfortable at a table. Our server this evening was Daniel and he was just fantastic. He was immensely knowledgeable, personable, kind, patient, and thorough. We ate oysters, Pan Tomate, Iberico ham, and Gambas al Ajillo. Everything was perfectly done. The blueberry pear sorbet was outstanding and when my mother and I were indecisive about an after-dinner drink, Daniel was kind enough to offer us a sherry. It was like drinking a smooth, sweet, fig syrup. What a great way to end a perfect dining experience. I also have to mention the staff, especially Daniel, were all so kind to my mother. The majority of what she says is incomprehensible because of the stroke and instead of the staff being intimidated or uncomfortable, as many people are, they did everything they could to make her feel welcome and special. All around, our dinner at Barcino was just perfect. My mother and I are looking forward to returning as soon as we are able.

Great for location--the tapas are Catalan-ish, where the major flavoring for all dishes is just salt. I've cooked Iberian food at home, since the 1980's and the East Bay has 3 restaurants, no less, where I can go to elevate my game. Of 3 tapas, salt was the predominant/overwhelming flavor--which it should not be in albondigas, pulpo, pa & jamon. {beef veal meatballs, octopus, bread & tomato, and the former + thinly sliced ham.} Be aware that 1/3 of every dish but the pulpo is same slices of olive oil bread--so if you order without for diet reasons, expect a very small dish. I have no medical issues with salt--God help anyone who does. The sometimes-unsubtle Portugese rural small plates that we had through most of August were more subtly flavored and variegated. A minor point--if you order beer listed (and asked for) as Pilsner, inquire when it comes. Mine was a kolsch--a nice one, but not if you are fussy about your beers

Food was great and 3 medium shared plates was plenty for my 2 daughters and me, even thought the waiter said we would need more...maybe if there had been a bigger eater, but we were more than satisfied with portions to share. Waiter was OK, and bartender was a bit rude, but food was great.

New Year's Eve is almost never a restaurant's best night but we were impressed with Barcino for our pre-show dinner. The chef's tapas menu with wine pairing was a great NYE value and the choices were lovely. The wine pairing was exceptional. Service was good, particularly since everyone seemed to have an 8 PM show to make. We will be back!

We arrived for our reserved table just at "closing," but did not feel rushed. (Several tables were occupied when we departed, later.) The Paella (served with dark rice) was available with no restrictions, and (although the menu says, "Up to 40 minutes...") arrived perhaps 20 minutes after ordering. The imaginative small plates were more than enough for 4 of us to share. All in all, we're pleased that, based on prior dinners there, we had recommended Barcino to our friends. The Paella was more than adequate for 4, and would be too much for 2. We shared two small plates, and the total amount of food was perhaps a bit more than needed.

Barcino is conveniently located to the Civic Center Arts scene. If you are dashing off to a performance with little time to dine, Barcino's menu of small plates makes "grabbing a bite" literally easy - AND delicious. I loved the hipster crowd - even as one who has aged out of that community. Very relaxing, sexy, and cool destination in Hayes Valley with good picks for meat lovers and vegetarians alike.

We loved our meal, once again, at Barcino. And, more importantly, so did our guests. Our sister in law is vegetarian, and she found plenty of dishes she loved, and they accommodated this in others by leaving dressings, garnishes, etc, on the side for the rest of us. Thank you, Barcino, for making our Hamilton night very special.
