A celebration of East African  food & culture.

Bringing the vibrant flavors of East Africa to Detroit, Baobab Fare is a restaurant founded by refugees from Burundi that embodies the spirit of “Detroit Ni Nyumbani” — Detroit is Home.

Baobab Fare serves 100% halal homestyle East African dishes in a bright, welcoming space that also offers coffee, tea, and fresh juices. All of our desserts are vegan and much of the menu is naturally gluten-free, accommodating many dietary restrictions and preferences.

Esquire Magazine and Eater both named Baobab Fare one of the Best New Restaurants in the country when it debuted in 2021, and the restaurant and its owners have been recognized multiple times by the James Beard Awards as semifinalists. In 2024, co-owners Hamissi Mamba & Nadia Nijimbere were finalists in the Outstanding Restaurateur category.

The multi-James Beard Award-nominated couple make hearty dishes like slow-simmered beef with fried plantains (nyumbani) alongside fellow refugees. Pro tip: a jar of the fiery habanero pepper hot sauce pili makes for a great memento from the meal.

I’m so glad we took the time to come here. We’ve been thinking about it since they opened and we were pleasantly surprised. The food was amazing! The staff was so friendly and fun despite being incredibly busy. You can tell they really enjoy working here. I can’t wait to come back honestly.

Great service and delicious food with a unique flavor profile, East African comfort food. Very affordable I will definitely be back.

The food was very good. The service was awful. Upon arrival, we were placed in the back corner of the restaurant near the kitchen and promptly forgotten. We waited 20 minutes without even being served water. Numerous other couples arrived after us, including those without reservations, and were served before us. Finally, we flagged a waitress down and she eventually took our order although she was visibly annoyed for having to deal with us. Normally I would just leave in this situation, but my partner wanted to stay and "not make a scene". I do not plan on coming back, and I wouldn't recommend this place based on the poor service we received.

My first experience in total was absolutely excellent This 2nd time the food was excellent. However, the service was poor. The server, ‘tall blonde girl’ never gave her name when I told her that my two companions was their first time there. I asked could you describe the menu? She decided to tell us about her three favorite dishes only with not much detail. If I do come back I’ll make sure she is NOT my server

The food was delicious. There were four of us and we tried a variety of dishes, all of which were terrific. The staff were attentive and friendly; it seemed like everyone had a smile on their face. Compared to other James Beard-level restaurants the prices are quite reasonable. It some ways it would be nice if wine or beer were an option, but in other ways that was fine. Gave us an excuse to go somewhere else after! Overall it was a great experience and I'd recommend Baobab Fare highly.
