Obviously it's hard to review a restaurant when all the guests have to sit outside due to COVID restrictions, and it's hard to get a true handle on service, food, and basically everything because life during these Coronavirus times are "iffy".
However, that being said, I think it's incredibly brave to open a new restaurant during these times. Baja Norte far exceeded my expectations and I'm thrilled to have a delicious new menu to enjoy.
I've heard complaints that the food was too expensive but my husband and I did not find that to be the case. I ordered the seabass tacos at $28 but it was a huge amount of food. There were 3 beautiful tacos overflowing with deliciousness; the seabass was abundant and not deep-fried like so many other places. It was lightly floured and seared so the outside was crisp but the inside was buttery. I could only stuff myself with 2 and no way could I have eaten the other items that came with my order.
We also had the guacamole - perfection, and I don't know if the chips are homemade but they are delicious. My husband loved his carne asida tacos and we started with the chorizo quesadilla and I thought my husband was going to drink the entire bowl of salsa.
But drinks - this is the same owner who had the Rebecca's restaurant in Venice back in the '80s and they have the same oh-so-famous margaritas. So, yeah.....GREAT margaritas.
Service was attentive and friendly and we left feeling content in every way.
Apparently in response to the pandemic or possibly to their traditional business just falling off, they opted for a "faux" south of the border menu. It was a failure. Everything is a taco. The $30 plus lamb taco was 3 street tacos with, possibly, three teaspoons of lamb in each. It took 15 minutes from ordering to getting a martini, with two attention getting waves to the server.
Not worth it.
Food was fantastic, drinks were even better. The fish tacos were worth writing home about. Will definitely go back
Well, it's probably unfair to review during a pandemic opening with only a few tables on the sidewalk out in front...BUT, as very long-time Brentwood Restaurant supporters and neighbors, we are thrilled to say that our experience tonight was as good as we could possibly imagine. From the reminiscent Rebecca's margaritas, through the perfect tortilla soup and incredibly fresh and tasty tacos (we tried duck, chicken and carnitas,) this is SoCal Mexican food at its very finest. Topping it off was the sentimental rigatoni, a Brentwood favorite, now made with chorizo and truly outstanding by any measure. Lots of fun, tremendous food presented beautifully, and a star in the making. We miss The Brentwood terribly, but we miss a lot of familiar things right now and at least we can all look forward to Baja Norté.
As someone who was a regular at the brentwood, I was looking forward to the brentwood reopening. however, the Brentwood has closed and reimagined into Baja Norte, sadly, I would NOT recommend it. Went last night on the first night back (I know that they likely have kinks to work out) and had high hopes that the food would be just as good as it was when it was the brentwood. It is not. I was very disappointed. I ordered chicken tortilla soup, it had zero flavor, I sent it back and ordered the hamburger, they had no cheese, the burger was not great, lacked flavor as well and was missing half of what it was supposed to come with.
My husband got carnitas tacos and what he got was pork belly tacos, some yellow rice with peas and carrots. oh and we had chips and guac, the chips were good, the guac was creamy and could have been squeezed out of a bag. It was meh. What is most disappointing is that none of the previous staff is back, and there seems to be no plans to have them back. My experience was very disappointing and it is highly unlikely that we will go back.
We ordered an artichoke app. We didn't get the whole artichoke but 2 hearts cut up with sauce on the side and the charge was $21!!! Spoke with the manager who was understanding and allowed us to send back at no cost. Firstly, that is a ridiculous amount of money for what they serve and rude and secondly, customer service should have been that the manager gave us the app at no charge (not that we were looking for free food) in order to placate the guest and tell them that they will speak with the owner (who he said sets the prices) about the price. Artichokes cost less than a dollar. We sat at the bar and the bartenders were very accommodating.
All I can say... Skirt Steak!!
I went twice this week and both nights were disappointments. We have been coming here for years and it’s not the same. Service was sub par both nights (no one took our order for 20 min, and we had to wave down staff for water, drink orders). While the truffle ragu was good, it was too salty, and the fish n chips were room temp and fish was soggy and tough. The donut dessert was great. The service was disappointing. We had trouble waving down staff even near end of night where there were only a few tables. We would have ordered another bottle of wine. One waiter that wasn’t ours saw us looking for someone and he came over and could not have been more helpful. I think his name was Pete (bald head with a goatee). He was great. Our group of 5 each night are in the neighborhood and I’ll not be rushing back.
Caesar was large enough to share and was very tasty. Wife's fish was excellent. My NY had to be redone as I ordered Medium rare and it came out almost well done. Second one was perfect, but took too long to arrive. Didn't have them this time but the donut holes are terrific.
Food, service and ambiance are great. Perfect for a special occasion. It’s not cheap, but like I said, a great place for a special occasion. Comfort food.
Loved our valentines date.
This is MY place!! Stay away! This is too good to share. It has replaced most of my LA favorites and is my go-to of choice. A super competent kitchen and great service and terrific bar. I am afraid to recommend it cause there might not be room for me!
Great neighborhood fine dining.
The Brentwood never disappoints, the food is always GREAT, the service is fantastic , and the bar is top notch.
This place is very noisy, which is why we requested a booth along the side when we made our reservation. Despite the fact that there were vacantb booths when we arived the host told us that they were all reserved and we needed to sit in a very noisy table in the middle. We have eaten here about 50 times, so thet must have had some very important customers who they prefer.
Rudest host ever. Food mediocre and overpriced. Rushed us to eat and very chaotic atmosphere -lots of moving chairs and tables. Bizarre.
Always love dining at The Brentwood! The food is always delicious and the service- fabulous!
We had a lovely dinner - the menu is very creative and the food is excellent. Service was prompt, very polite and unobtrusive. We'll definitely return!
The service was very slow and inattentive and the food was not that great especially for the price. I really like the ambiance though
Very comfortable and exciting atmosphere.
I always love this place, but the wine prices have gotten out of control and our waiter was not very attentive, but the food is always good. They ran out of ice cream so at least he comped the dessert.
i love this place. convivial, great food. a great local haunt.
Louder than I remember. Food was good and out server was excellent.
Nice. Great waiter. Good food. A little pricey.. but overall happy.
We had a wonderful meal, with great service. Nobody rushed us and everyone was very attentive. I would definitely return to this restaurant and highly recommend it. The ambiance was very low key and welcoming while still being upscale. Everybody around us seemed to be having a great time as well.
We are regulars there. The service is hit and miss, depending on who the waiter is. This time we had the worst waiter of all. He couldn’t hear, never checked in not cleaned up what we didn’t need, and stuck his fingers in our plate, etc, etc. the food is just ok for the price. It was better at one time. We only come for the local and the maitre di is always nice. Too bad the owner isn’t present to see what’s the issues are
Our party of 11 had a wonderful time. Our birthday guest called it “the best meal I’ve had since I moved here “ (which is saying a lot as he is the pickiest person we know). As always, the bone-in filet was exquisite; the scampi delicious; the cocktails their customary magnificence. Our server was sublime (and good-humored to boot); the maitre d’ was extremely attentive. This particular group of friends can be persnickety (part of the reason we took them out instead of cooking for them at home!) but the Brentwood Restaurant & Lounge staff handled them all with aplomb and everyone had a lot of fun.
Very good service and ambience but unfortunately we ordered a prime NY Strip steak for $70 that was as tough as shoe leather. Not the restaurant's fault but the supplier of the beef.
As always we love Brentwood. Kinda moody and classic with good vibe. Just had drinks and quick bites. My salad was good. Feel like my favorite thing to order is no longer on the menu :(
GREAT HAMBURGERS AND FRIES. FRIED CHICKEN WONDERFUL TOO.
I was not impressed with Nathan our waiter. A tag on 20 percent, not 18 not 15. Kind of unfriendly and felt we were imposing on him. Did not crack a smile. I did not want to tip him but did not want to make trouble. But he should earn his tip and not expect it for below standard of service. Ate out of the restaurant but service sucks for a 4-5 star restaurant
I was very impressed to have such high quality dining options in our backyard and to avoid traffic
Excellent restaurant and a good late night bar. Very relaxed atmosphere with a busy little bar.
Empty restaurant and hot food
Best restaurant in the hood!!! Great atmosphere, service and the food is terrific!
Our meatloaf was terrific.Ribs seemed too large to be baby back. The wine by the glass was good. The salmon appetizer was just ridiculous-4 small pieces of salmon..on a flour laden belly bomb advertised as a crepe.no onions, capers, lemon, black pepper...who serves something like that?
Waiter rushed us by taking guests plates away as one guest was still eating dinner. Felt this was rude. I spoke to the waiter on the side and he apologized.
We went to the bar after dinner for an after dinner drink. The bartender was friendly and atmosphere was pleasant.
