We were outside (my preference was inside but we had a dog with us which they accommodated). I think our experience would have been better inside. We had brunch. I will try it one more time for dinner next time.
I‘m a huge fan of Matthew Kinney and his life purpose, so when I saw that Baia in SF is associated with him I had to try it. Baia has the potential to convince the skeptical that vegan dining can be a supreme culinary experience. The food isn’t consistently excellent, so that would be their top area to focus on to go from good to great.
Ambiance - The place is a bit loud inside and the high tables are so wide that you can’t hear your party on the other side over the loud noise. I recommend not seating at the high tables for that reason.
Service - Our server Matt was attentive and friendly. Missed bringing us one dish though and blamed the chef for it. He also brought us one appie we didn’t order, but it tasted great - so we didn’t complain.
Food - Our favorites: Meatballs (very well seasoned meatballs in a creamy polenta), Fiori Di Zucca (fried Zucchini Blossoms), the Lasagna (tasted like authentic Italian meat lasagna with homemade pasta - delicious!!), and the spicy sausage pizza. The torta is a creamy, delicious rich chocolate hazelnut ganache) - loved it. The panna cotta is also excellent and creamy.
Dishes I recommend skipping: Mozzarella Sticks (the “cheese is too creamy for this dish I believe - all my non vegan friends didn’t like them), Parmesan (their eggplant Parmesan is undercooked - I had the first one returned for it and the second one was also undercooked. Saw this comment from another reviewer also).
Very much enjoyed my experience and the food was phenomenal! Will definitely be returning.
I wonder how they got the good reviews....4 of us from 4 different countries all think the food are terrible are terribly salty.
Great vegan restaurant and the food is so flavorful if you are a meat eater you don't even notice its vegan!
Great atmosphere, eclectic and fine food, staff was very attentive. Great experience! Spicy sausage pizza! You won’t know it’s vegan.
Outstanding plant-based menu. A real treasure for Hayes Valley.
It was amazing food! The eggplant parmigiana could've been cooked a bit more but we took it home and will cook it more!
Excellent food and service!
Generally good experience, but the lemon thyme ravioli dish we got was definitely undercooked. Had a similar experience with the lasagna last time I came.
As three groups of friends who don't eat meat or dairy, BAIA was an incredible restaurant to go to celebrate our friend's recent engagement! From our first bites of Arancini, we were hooked on the food. Everything tasted great, but there was a good bit of nervousness from our lactose intolerant friend, because the only affirmation that their menu is dairy free comes from a small stanza in the bottom of the menu. No one on staff bothered to explain or answer the question of why the menu says parmesan or ricotta but somehow manages not to be dairy. We had to forge our own path of blind faith to just let ourselves eat the food, which on one hand turned out to be fine, but on the other hand was not the most comfortable way to start a meal for people with dietary restrictions.
Regarding ambiance, it took about an hour for our heater to get turned on properly, while the other heaters were all kept on around us. We were having too good of a time catching up to bother repeating our requests until we got to the last third of our meal, and it wasn't a deal breaker. Two things that would up the ante of the outdoor dining experience would be to find a way to have some light music playing in the background, because all of the other elements add up to make it feel like the absence of ambient music is something very obviously missing. Second would be to make sure to check the tables for cleanliness, as we sat down to a dusty table. It was solved with a wipe on our end, but for a $200 meal, I wouldn't normally expect it.
The staff was incredibly kind, and everyone looked to be hard at work. The restaurant itself smells amazing and makes you very excited to sit down and eat. The Arancini and Lasagne are incredible and I would come back if only just to eat them again. Keep up the great work!
Great date night/special occasion spot!
Beautiful interior (after the renovation), but overall was disappointed at the experience. We were seated on the second level, and despite the dining space not being overly crowded, the acoustics were really strange and lots of random noises and I could not hear my friend across the table.
We ordered four dishes + one dessert to share: the Fiori di Zucca was a delight; the "Mysticanza" artichoke salad was really plain and boring; the Agnolotti pasta with green peas was okay, but the lemon/peppery flavor was too strong and lacks a proper balance; the Parmesan (baked eggplant casserole) was extremely disappointing - the breading felt chewy and undercooked.
Initially we ordered the Spumoni dessert, but was served a completely frozen piece of mouse - turned out that all the Spumoni that night could not be served properly. We decided to try the chocolate torte instead - it was creamy and velvety, but again, lacked balance and felt flat.
Would only consider going back for a purely exploratory perspective.
It was nice to be indoors after all this time but the brunch menu was a bit too limited. The pizzas and salads are very good.
Lovely ambiance and decor for a special Mother’s Day brunch. I’ll be back for a meal shared with friends or on a date. Beautiful space and still carried a great ambiance despite social distancing.
The upstairs perch is fun for people watching while the booths convey an intimate gathering. Tasty food and great service. High marks!
Loved the food. San Francisco needs more high quality. Vegan restaurants like this one. GreaT variety of food and nice selection of craft cocktails. Can’t wait to go back.
The most stunning and delicious vegan Italian that we have ever had! The atmosphere was elegant and upscale. You MUST go!
It was great place for date night! Interior, food, service, and etc were all good!
Plant based restaurant with delicious Italian comfort food and wonderful service that meat eaters and vegans can enjoy.
Would go again and would recommend to vegan, vegetarians, and foodies alike.
Great food, great atmosphere, and great service!!!
Overall the food and experience was excellent. Unfortunately, the highly recommended lasagna was gummy. I tried to get our friend to send it back, but he was too polite. The eggplant parmesan, however was EXCELLENT - how they made the eggplant to have a meaty texture and such a crispy outside while topped with that flavorful sauce is a miracle! Service was excellent, and our table (outside) was warm and quiet. Nice selection of wines and drinks. We will definitely be back.
We loved all the dishes except the potato pizza, the waiter was concerning that we ordered too much(tbh not so much), but we finished all , good vegan food
Was a good restaurant and appetizers were lovely. The service was amazing, the server made our evening. The only thing that didn’t work was the pizza - it felt like we were eating dough. Overall a good replacement to Jardinere
Was so happy to find a new type of vegan spot in SF. We went for our anniversary and it was perfect fpr a special occasion. Loved all the pastas and apps. Wonderful service. Beautiful location. Excited to maybe pick up some of their pizzas to go sometime. Can't stress enough how fun it is to have a fancy vegan spot that's easy to book and delicious.
Waiter spilled oil on my jacket
No one apologized
Manager came 30 mins later , apologized
At end of meal , manager asked if we’d like desert , and offered to refill my moms wine glass
We were charged for both
food is good, service is a joke
Portions are too small.
Finally, a superb vegan Italian restaurant! The good is wonderful, whether you want to indulge in fresh pasta or pizza, or eat a vegetable-rich meal.
Baia was a delightful experience. Great wine list, delicious food, and good service! Will definitely come again.
Amazing restaurant! Food is fabulous. Delicious, creative and beautifully presented. Open a second location in Los Angeles!
Fun cocktails and the gluten free pizza was great! Pretty small pasta portions but the food all around was yummy
A really wonderful food adventure. The plant-based nature of their food is understated; it says so on the menu but one would never know based on the food choices (mozzarella, ricotta, meatballs, sausage, etc). Everything our group of 5 ordered was delicious! Service excellent. I will definitely go back.
The food was good, it wasn't great. Portions are fine. Cocktails were absolutely incredible. I would go back for cocktails and appetizers, but not for dinner. Service was just ok. Polite, but left a lot to be desired. The bussers were nice and super attentive. The server, not so much. Long stretches of time without the server checking in. We ordered food in courses and everything came out at the same time. I expect that service would be more thoughtful at a restaurant of this caliber. Granted, everyone is figuring out the rhythm of in restaurant dining and there are little issues that I am sure will resolve over time. We asked for the check when we ordered dessert because we didn't want to sit waiting for the check as the tables on either side of us had to. It is worth trying, for both vegan and no vegan diners.
Loved everything we ordered. Just a wonderful experience.
A decent place to grab a drink, but not to have a nice dinner. It looks and feels like an airport lounge.
Delicious vegan food. We had brunch and everything we ordered was tasty. Can't wait to try their dinners.
Staff inside and outside was all good!
Drinks and appetizers were super
Agnolotti and cauliflower were outstanding
Eggplant parm and lasagna were just so so
Outside was too cold even with heater
A candle or flowers or something nice wud have improved ambiance since decor was pretty drab
Expensive for vegan food
But overall fun and tasty night out in SF after 1 year
Outdoor covid seating
Absolutely amazing vegan food. Brunch or dinner, you can't go wrong.
