Fabulous food and staff! Best beef we’ve had in years. Difficult to find even with GPS as sign on door is microscopic. Listing should say “Back 40 at Timbercrest Farm” as the farm awning completely obscures the Back 40 sign. Also, perhaps change menu item from “Bread and Butter” to “Freshly Baked Sourdough and Butter” or something along those lines.
We will be back the next time we are in Charlottesville!
Fresh decor, comfortable sitting, great service from Maggie, cocktails were awesome, food presentation was beautiful! Everyone enjoyed their food - soft shell crab, halibut, pork, steak, and duck. Our local guests said they are definitely coming back to enjoy the innovative and fresh selections.
Everything here is very good, but the true star of the meal is definitely the cuts of meat. I don't think I've ever had a pork chop cooked so perfectly!
This was our second visit and the food was perfect again. Chef Tucker is quote the talented chef. Duck breast was nice portion and delicious. Can't beat their delicious farm-raised meats.
This restaurant was recommended by a coworker who is local when I was looking for a steakhouse. The service was phenomenal. There are only 4-5 tables inside and only 1 other table was occupied. It is a very small setting so you get the server's attention. Ordered a mug-tini, and its a martini in a mug. I did not care for it too much as it tasted like an onion martini, reminded me of semi old vegetables. The ribeye had really good taste to it but it was extremely chewy. There is no marbling to the steak, perhaps due to grass fed beef. The tendon and fat where on the outskirts of the steak. Overall, it has a great atmosphere but I was disappointed in the actual food since I had high expectations.
Back 40 is amazing every time we go. New and creative dishes too. Just had one with soft shell crabs, peanut crusting, and pork. Wow.
Excellent from beginning to end. My duck was rarer than I like, but it was no trouble to get that sorted. The choices available were great and the presentation of each meal mouth watering.
Tucker and his family are old friends.
It was nice to support him and see his continuing success in his professional life.
Limited menu. Asked for medium rare steak and it came out rare. It was cooked with too much salt. Halibut was excellent. Dining room is tiny.
Everything was delicious. If you order a steak, be sure to explain what you expect for doneness. I ordered a medium rare steak but, by my definition, it was quite rare.
We had a delicious dinner to celebrate graduation and an 80th birthday. The fresh baked bread was delicious and the steaks were incredible and cooked to perfection. Everything was very fresh and there was a nice wine list. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and wine list. Overall it was a wonderful celebration dinner.
Incredibly fresh, local, seasonal dishes. Great service. This is my new favorite place in C’ville.
Wow! I loved everything about this evening. We sat on the porch. The staff was AMAZING!!!! The food was awesome. We will definitely be back again and again.

What a pleasant surprise. Both my guest and I were from other cities, and I chose Back 40 based on Open Table reviews. What we got exceeded all expectations set by those reviews. Short version: How does a restaurant that small offer such quality and creativity at such a reasonable price.
Because our respective flights were late, we did not get to the restaurant until almost 8:30, so we both had two appetizers rather than an entree. I had the pâté and the steak tartare, and my guest had a salad and the tartare as well. Turns out we both fancy the dish, and both of had sampled it numerous times in many cities and several countries. Both of us left saying this was the best tartare we had ever had. Texture, flavor, presentation, even the littlest potato chips I had ever seen (the size of a nickel) contributed to the experience. Sublime.
The pâté was equally sublime—silky and sumptuous but not overpowering. Were there a way to keep it fresh through the next day's flight home, I would have ordered a batch to go in a heartbeat.
The restaurant itself is unpretentious in the extreme. Neither cozy nor cold, it was mainly utilitarian. The food is the star here.
The oyster steak gets lots of dings in the reviews here. Our waitress said they try hard to alert patrons to the dish's special texture; I say skip the controversial offering and experience your own little bit of heaven with one of the two we tried. You'll be sharing the recommendation with friends the next day, just as we did.
Food was very good as was service. The wine pour by the glass was very stingy. Recommend they remedy that.
My wife and I came here to celebrate our anniversary. Everything was fabulous. I can honestly say that the bone-in Ribeye was the best steak I have ever eaten. We will definitely be back.
The food was way to salty. Pork was gross. Meat slightly undercooked. Everything too salty.

Steak was poor. Duck was TASTELESS, fish so salty it was unpalatable.

Our second time to Back 40 was every bit as good as the first a few months ago. Food is primarily sourced locally from Timbercreek Farms (their butcher shop is next door). The food was outstanding. My wife had the duck breast, which was the leanest duck we've ever had. I had the beef tenderloin that was also perfectly prepared. The salad and side dish items were seasonal and I understand they will change based on whatever is in season at the farm. Service both times was excellent. The restaurant is relatively small (estimate seating for 25-30), plus four or five seats at the bar. We were there early in the evening so there were few people there and it was easy to carry on a conversation. It is definitely on our "Keeper" list.
This was the best meal we’ve had in Charlottesville! We came for my moms birthday and everyone loved their food. The meat and produce are all super high quality and expertly prepared. The staff was also so nice. Our favorites were duck confit, salad, tenderloin and rib eye. Great selection of wines too. Definitely book this for a special occasion!
Very pleasant place to dine - small, intimate space, quiet and very comfortable. Staff are all very friendly. Not surprisingly, beef is terrific, but so is everything else, including the veggies.
We were a party of 5, 3 grown children and husband celebrating a birthday and wife. They sat us in front of the door (like, 6 feet from), and every time the door opened a blast of cold air hit us. The ambience and decor are nice, rustic but like a very nice lodge. Portions are big, my 21 and 22 year old sons split a steak, the rib eye. My other 21 year old had the fish, very good, and my husband had the filet, also very good. I had the oyster cut. Can’t recommend this. It was kinda tough and very fatty. Bread was good, and veggies were good. Service was good.
Tucker Yoder is an accomplished chef, specializing in local meats and seasonal vegetables. Very creative menu.
Food was frowned in salt. What they called an Oyster Steak was a very different cut and very tough with lots of tendons. Oyster steaks are very tender

Back 40 was hands down the best restaurant we've eaten at in Charlottesville! Great wine list, friendly & knowledgeable staff and the food was amazing! We can't wait to go back!

This localvore restaurant has inspired cuisine based on superb local ingredients. It is, first and foremost, about meat, although other choices are on the menu and the side vegetables are wonderful. It is the best new restaurant in Charlottesville.

We had an absolutely delicious meal. The food was perfectly prepared, the dishes were interesting and unique, and the flavors were quite diverse. Yum.
What an overall wonderful experience! We had heard grand things about Back 40 and they did not disappoint. A gem in Charlottesville. Take note of the ceiling sculpture and inquire about its origin. There are beautiful stories behind the creation of Back 40.
We are pretty serious duck fans and felt the duck was just ok. It didn't have much flavor. The steak was great but a little over priced.
Waiter was unresponsive and uninformative. Food Issa good bit nothing outstanding except liver mousse. Good enough, hope they shore up some of the gaps. Good wine list that is different and reasonably priced
