The food was delicious but the waiter made the meal seem rushed.
The bread is delicious, and we were seated promptly for our reservation at eight, but it went a bit down hill from there. We were a table of six, for a graduation dinner. They stuck us in the basement, and our waitress had us and a table of eight, who came in at the same time. Needless to say, her attention was very divided, and it showed. That was stupid to assign two big tables to the same waitress. She messed up a wine order, but had nicely offered to bring a couple of whites to taste, only to bring the wrong one. And the kitchen was very busy, and that also showed. The gnocchi was ordered explicitly without tomato sauce, which she wrote down, so I blame it on the kitchen, and her not checking the order when it came out with it, and so that person had to wait another ten minutes or more. My risotto came out a good ten minutes after most of the other dinners and was undercooked and chewy. I would have preferred to have been told that they were out or risotto and it would take a while, so I could have chosen another dish. The carbonara was very salty. And we were charged a 20% tip automatically, despite bad service. The only thing memorable, as I said, was the bread, and they were generous with two rounds as we waited a long time for our food. And I should say, I know Italian food well, so perhaps I am more picky than some. Still, a disappointment, especially for the price which came to $50/person, even though everyone ordered pasta, not secondi meat/seafood dishes. We skipped dessert and went to Modern Pastry for a good ending to the night.
When I read the reviews on this page I saw 100 positive and 1 negative, I almost let that one negative review sway me from not dining here, but I am SO glad I didn't. We had an absolutely incredible experience here. The octopus was outstanding and so were the short ribs (WOW) just an amazing experience all around. Toni (our waiter) was beyond kind and helped so much with food and wine selection. It was such a great time! You will not be disappointed!
Incredible food and even better service. Hidden gem!!
Before we went to Assaggio I read all the reviews and found very few that were negative. I've been to Bricco and Mare before this. Those experiences were great and have been back several times. I thought Assaggio would be the same.
From the moment we sat down our waiter was in a hurry to get us drinks when we didn't even open the wine list. When the wine was placed on the table he was asking us for our order. I had to tell him we wanted to sit and enjoy.
We ordered appetizers which were delicious. The entree however, was over salted. It would have been delicious but for that. We did eat it without complaint. Then the bill came before we were asked if we wanted dessert or coffee. I had to ask for coffee.
The impression my daughter and I came away with was an intention of turning over tables as soon as possible. We even observed the maitre d looking toward our table and then at his watch! We were there 1 1/2 hours. I will give it another chance because I always try a new restaurant twice.
I had the veal which was fantastic. Good wine list. They bring you a huge platter of fruit and lemoncello at the end of your meal complementary so save room!
went for a dinner with my husband. The staff was very attentive, and the food was delicious. At the end of the meal we got complimentary limonchello and a huge plate of fresh fruit. the owner walked around and talked to patrons. overall it was lovely.
Excellent food and cool presentation. The fruit basket was amazing.
Attentive service, good cocktail selection, white wine suggestion was perfect. Food was good and well prepared, but menu somewhat typical of the rest of Boston’s North End. If Positano-oriented, I might have expected more lemon dishes, perhaps a different decor - more light and heat and sea.
The food was amazing and similar to traditional Italian food, which is difficult to find even in the North End. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful and there was a bonus treat of complimentary fruit and limoncello.
Great service with a pleasant staff. Menu offers a classic and very special dishes. Octopus appetizer is fantastic. Full range of wine choices makes easy pairing. Great for business or a date.
Excellent service at the bar. Very knowledgeable about food and wine.
I live in the North End, and Assagio is one of my favorite restaurants. I dine here regularly, and have always enjoyed everything about the experience. The food, the ambience, the friendliness of all who work there. The value for the food-which is 5 star–is outstanding.
Can't say enough about how good our waitress was and all the wait staff. Also the food was plentiful and delicious.
Grigliata is NOT to miss- outstanding! Octopus appetizer superb. Food and ambiance always excellent
We LOVED the atmosphere!!! Marissa was fantastic and attentive, as well as the rest of the service on the floor. It was definitely a busy Saturday night, and it’s a cozy space, so reservations are a must! Assaggio is totally worth the experience!!!
Great food and casual atmosphere. Would certainly recommend.
Our dinner at Assaggio was excellent. We were seated upstairs (street level). While the dining room was small, we did not feel crowded. We were allowed to take our time and enjoy our meal. It was not so loud that we had to strain to here. Our reservations were for 6:30, and we were seated promptly. Our server, Natalia, was terrific. She had a great sense of humor and was quite attentive without being overwhelming. She was knowledgeable about the menu and able to offer suggestions. We had apps - octopus, zucchini flowers, sausage with rabe. All were delicious. Our meal was wonderful. My husband had the veal chop, which was enormous and cooked to perfection. I had the carbonara, which was served with pancetta. Another person had the vongole while the final person had the zuppa di pesce. All were fresh and plentiful. The pasta was cooked to perfection. We enjoyed our salads after the meal, as requested. They were crisp and fresh. We were surprised with limoncello after our meal and an amazingly bountiful fruit platter. It was a great experience, and we will definitely be going back. The menu offered something for everyone unless you wanted parmigiana or something similar. Two of our party had lived in Italy for a number of years, and they pronounced this the most authentic meal they had eaten in the states. Again, the service was great. Natalia was a great server. I can't wait to go back!
Never again. I brought my grandmother and cousin for a dinner in the North End and booked Assaggio at the last minute. We were seated in the basement, which was so dark I had to use my phone as a flashlight so my Gran could read the menu. There was a huge TV playing sports that was brighter than the lights (which was strange, because it was set up like fine dining and there's no bar downstairs). We were under a speaker blaring jazzy energetic music that made it hard for my Gran to to hear and I had to ask twice for it to be turned down.
The pasta amatriciana was good, the lasagna was mediocre, and the risotto was overcooked mush. The presentation was horrendous. My pasta was served in a cold frying pan and looked like it had been dumped out of a takeout container. The risotto was a sad soupy mess without any type of garnish. The lasagna looked like lasagna. Everything except the bread looked like leftovers.
Service was initially fine, but our server very clearly lost interest in us when we declined for the 3rd time to order wine and he instead doted on the table next to us ordering cocktails.
There are so many amazing places in the North End, don't waste your money or time here. There are incredible places at every price point there and Assaggio is not one of them.
Excellent meal well presented and prepared lasagna was excellent as was the spaghetti and meatballs, was running Boston the next day so didn’t get to experience the menu as much as I would have liked But I am confident that everything would’ve been great!
The service and food was excellent. We were 15 minutes early and they took us right away. If you like authentic Italian food, this is a great place to get it. We felt a little under dressed in jeans but they appeared not to notice.
Everything was really good but the service incredibly slow. When you go, plan on spending at least 90 minutes.
Awesome! Will return for sure!
Could not have been a more enjoyable evening. Everything was perfect, especially the food. The maître d’ Carlo is a really nice touch.
super place!!!!!! best food, good people, fun, can't say enough good!
Had opportunity to have dinner based on a recommendation. So glad we did! Assaggio is cozy North End restaurant that excels at presentation, service and authentic Italian cuisine. We had the Lamb Chop and Veal Milanese that we’re outstanding. Highly recommend. Pepe was our waiter and was highly attentive to all our needs.
Loved this restaurant - first time visiting Boston and the North End. Didn’t really know where to go and found this place online. Great dining experience- top notice wait staff and service. Most importantly, food was outstanding. Wonderful selections and beautiful presentation. Would definitely visit again.
The host and the waiter were beyond exceptional! North end can be tricky, and I was a bit skeptical but I have to say that this has made my list of Best restaurant in the North end, for sure. The lamb entree was just outstanding. It was the perfect portion and it was cooked to perfection. I will be back again, certainly.
Our experience was somewhat disappointing. We were looking forward to trying Assaggio during restaurant week and the four course meal for $33 seemed too good to pass up. After being seated, we were informed that the website made a mistake and it was in fact a 3-course meal offered. The waitress offered to bring bruschetta as a fourth course, however it was burnt and bland. It was very close quarters in the downstairs dining area. Our wine was knocked over twice, the first time by the restaurant staff and the second time by a guest who knocked my full glass of red wine all over me, my meal, and the man sitting at the table next to me. The restaurant staff slowly came over to help and only offered a damp towel and a new pour of wine. They took my unfinished meal away, did not offer any additional food, and left us sitting at a wine-soaked table and chair. The waitress even said “I didn’t do it” which did not help the situation. Restaurant staff also kept asking if we were finished with our courses and made us feel like we were being rushed through our meal. I will say, however, the filet mignon and tiramisu was delicious. Overall, the food quality was good and it had the potential for a romantic date night, it just did not live up to the potential we were hoping for.
We went to Assaggio for Dine Out Boston and the food was incredible. Especially the panna cotta - I think we're both going to be dreaming about that dessert for a while. The wait staff was attentive and kind, plus I really enjoyed talking to our waitress. It was a little loud for my taste, but also cozy and overall a great experience.
Food was AMAZING! We went for a date and it was the perfect volume, derive was incredible and food was great! Going back!
The service and food was spectacular!! Will be revisiting soon.
Excellent food and service. A North End gem for Italian food.
Absolutely awful! Had a 7:45 reservation didn’t sit till 8:30. Waiter service was non existent, and couldn’t get someone to come back to take our drink order after ordering. Didn’t get out appetizers till almost 9:30 and when we did they were incorrect. Brought our issues to the managers attention and absolutely nothing was done about it. We ended up walking out.
Ev.erything was great, food, service and location. Had a great time
Typical North End restaurant with its tight spaces and loud atmosphere, but the food here does separate it a bit from the rest of its competitors. We took advantage of Assaggio during Dine Out Boston and it was an experience that in the end we weren’t ecstatic about but were glad we tried it. Starting off we were seated downstairs which was great since the dinner rush hadn’t started, but not the most desirable area to sit. Drinks, apps, and entree’s came out prompt and were delicious all around. Dessert took a while due to a busy kitchen which is understandable in a North End restaurant. Quick note: the tiramisu was amazing! Service was some of the best you will get in the North End from the waiter to the bus boys they are all very professional and courteous.
As soon as we were seated, our server Kevin was there to answer our questions, make suggestions and deliver the best sangria I have ever had. You must order the zucchini flowers stuffed with ricotta and the bruschetta with any of the toppings. And keeping with the zucchini theme, the spaghetti with zucchini, Norvano, was like nothing I ever have had - delicious. My husband had the ravioli which he said were the best he ever had - and I have to agree. We enjoyed it so much we wanted to go back the next night, but had an event to go to. The next time I am going to Boston I will also go to Assiago
We were greeted by a lovely women who sat us promptly. Waitress was great. Food was excellent. Manager Cory came over a couple of times to make sure everything was right. I had lamb chops & my husband had the filet. They were both superb. Next trip to the N End we will go back...
Great service and ambiance! The food was overall fantastic, we enjoyed apps, mains and desserts!
The food was okay. The wait staff were great. But for an Italian restaurant, the portions are very small.
