About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Fancy
  • Great for creative cocktails
Located just steps from the waterfront, ANIMAE is where West Coast flair meets Asian soul. Under the direction of Executive Chef Tara Monsod, a James Beard Award finalist, the menu delivers bold, genre-defying dishes like her signature Pork Tomahawk Tocino—a smoky, sweet, deeply umami showstopper grilled over a traditional coal-fired oven.

Inside, ANIMAE stuns with a maximalist-meets-modern aesthetic: think art deco glam, velvet banquettes, mirrored ceilings, and an energy that’s both sultry and celebratory. Whether you're dining in the main room or sipping cocktails in the tucked-away lounge, every corner invites you to stay awhile.

    MICHELIN Plate2022

From the OpenTable editors: Filipino American chef Tara Monsod takes fusion food to the next level at this groovy Art Deco space. Expect opulent riffs on classics like crispy pig ears and kare kare—Monsod is one of the few chefs in the country putting Filipino food on the fine-dining stage. The approach earned her numerous awards, including a prestigious MICHELIN Plate.

The food was as outstanding as expected, but the service was above and beyond. Our server, Audrey not only got to know us, but then removed a dish from our bill when we simply suggested it wasn’t our favorite. She was outstanding and made the evening. Decor was a lot of fun as well

Interesting, well-prepared dishes with delicious sauces. Special shout-outs for the short rib karkar, the ahi appetizer, the red curry seabass, and the cabbage side dish. The A5 Wagyu tenderloin was tasty, of course, but not the quality we found in Japan; not worth the price. Well, nothing on the menu is necessarily worth the price because it's a pricey place. But for a special evening, especially a business dinner, Animae is a great choice.

Our old fashioned drinks were bad. Our Pork Tomohocino was 3/4th fat and little lion. The wagyu fried rice was okay. The gin cocktail was outstanding.

We tried the sea bass, the crab fried rice, and the snap pea salad with coconut and we’re only impressed by the last dish. The first two were average tasting. I do recommend the salad for its novel use of coconut cream paired with fresh veggies.

The service was fine and the food was mediocre. I’ve had lemongrass chicken at several places around the world and what they call lemongrass chicken here is certainly not that. Chicken was not bad but was very bland and certainly not worth $38.

It was our second time dining at Animae and both times were such a blast! The service is consistently great, the food never disappoints, and the drinks are so well balanced. My boyfriend was unsure about the first drink he got, so we politely asked if he could possibly switch for another one and the server was so nice about it! They gave me an extra dessert for my birthday and I loved it! I couldn’t pin my favorite dish because they were all amazing.
