A hidden gem. Amazing view of the city. My mocktail was out of this world. Service was great. Manager visited our table at the end. She was super friendly and I can’t wait to bring my husband back.

Food, service, ambiance...everything was outstanding. Kinda quirky that it's inside Saks but the view is fabulous. Absolutely loved the kimchi dumplings, crab cakes, raw lasagna, kelp noodles, and veg burger. For dessert we tried the coconut pie and a couple of ice creams and they were insanely tasty. My friend is not vegan but was just along for the ride and ended up loving everything. Also the wine list is approachable PLUS organic and sustainable!! Service was genuinely friendly, knowledgeable, and down to earth. So happy this place exists, I'll be back many times!

We booked a table for Valentine's Day about a month in advance. We arrived five minutes before our scheduled time but actually got the table more than an hour and a half later!
There are many explanations and reasons for this, as we heard from a manager, but in practice it was simply time and order management!
Above all, as a vegan for the last 8 years, the food was mediocre and nothing more.
Although we didn't pay for the meal in the end, it was an unpleasant evening and our last time at this restaurant!

Food was sub par much better vegetarian and vegan food in this city. Waited half an hour past our reservation time for a table. Super overpriced as well.

Hi Matthew, I apologize for the very subpar experience you had with us on Valentine's Day. We failed to account for a number of factors and this led to high wait times, for which there's no excuse. I'm sorry to hear you did not enjoy the prix fixe menu, but I believe there are dishes here on our everyday menu that you'd love. If you're open to discussing further, please email me at altheachicago@matthewkenneycusine[dotcom]. We'd love to have you back in. Kindly, Liz General Manager

We had to wait about 20 mins for our table because they were running behind which was a tad bit frustrating, but the service was amazing, the food was out-of-this-world, and the staff was very warm, kind, alert, knowledgable, friendly, and professional. I would say this place is 3x DOPE!!! And, I will be returning.

While the views and ambience were nice, we had to wait 45 minutes after our reservation time to be seated. They compensated us with free drinks, but unfortunately this circumstance was tough to overlook. The food was creative and presented well, but not very flavorful. If you’re just looking for upscale vegan dining in the most touristy area of town, this is what you get. If you want delicious vegan food, there are more affordable and well managed options.

Small restaurant within Saks department store was size of a broom closet that presents itself as upscale but fails miserably to deliver. When we arrived, they told us it will be a 20 min wait, turned out to be 40 min, so for a tiny restaurant = overbooked. To apologize they brought us complimentary glasses of wine (house wines not that good) in the middle of service after we had already purchased wine pairings packages (a series of white wines that all tasted the same) with the 4 course meal. They sloppily brought out the courses along with wine pairings. Food lacked taste and imagination. Overall if I could have given no stars, I would have. Extremely overpriced for the experience and food!

Hi Pedro, I'm very sorry you had such a disappointing experience with us last week. It is fair to say we dropped the ball a number of times, and there is no excuse for that. I completely understand if you aren't interested in chatting or revisiting us, but please consider reaching out to me at altheachicago@matthewkenneycuisine[dotcom] to discuss further. I believe there is a very enjoyable experience here for you if you're open to second chances. I hope to hear from you. Liz General Manager

Best place I have been to in the city. My wife and I recently became vegan. I too here there for Valentine’s Day which was also our 6 year wedding anniversary. They served us several good and new dishes the waiting staff was super helpful and friendly always attentive of you needs. One of the waiters tried to stop me from tipping him because he felt it was his duty to take care of up(I ended up tipping him very handsomely either way he was just that good) I really liked it going back next month.

I took someone I am really fond of here and I was so disappointed. Service was rushed and tag teamed, we had to knock and wait by the door to get security to let us in and at the end of our meal because I am a more masculine presenting female the check wasn’t left in the middle it was given to me and after my date clearly paid the receipt was again handed back to me which really bothers me. Teach you staff to not assume. Good food, strange atmosphere and very very poor service. Don’t take reservations at 7:45 if you want me out by 9 and the security guard is going to follow me to the elevator and say “the last two are leaving”. Not what I wanted my first date to be like.

My husband and I are vegetarian and we enjoyed the food choices. The food is creative and very tasty, although very pricey (we took advantage of the restaurant week special menu). The little gem ceasar salad and the spicy Udon noodle soup were our favorite dishes. It was an attractive venue but much smaller than we expected, kind of in a back room on the 7th floor of Saks Fifth Avenue. The service was attentive and friendly, and I would also like to try the happy hour for wine and appetizers during the week.

I was very excited to eat at Althena however left very disappointed - the soup was salty and tasteless, the main of udon noodles was average and something I could make at home and the ice cream was dry and crumbly with the spiced chocolate inedible as it was very hot - I love hot food but the amount of chili was overwhelming. On a more positive note, the cocktails were fantastic and Id go back just for those.

We had high hopes for our experience. Unfortunately, our expectations were not met.We did not get drinks for about 20 minutes after arriving. The food took nearly an hour to be served. The restaurant acknowledged our wait for food was excessive. They brought us free dessert, which only extended our time there. We would have preferred some sort of discount off the bill. The food was really good. And our server was a lovely person.

I came to Althea for Chicago Restaurant Week 2020. Everything I tried was delicious, though my favorites were the kimchi pancakes and barbacoa taco. The kimchi pancakes were actually a regular portion. I expected just a sampler serving for Restaurant Week, but it was really enough for two people. Everything was flavorful and the cocktail (Cocoa Cubano) was strong!
It was a bit noisy and although the restaurant itself has lovely decor, depending on where you're sitting, you may get a view of the shoe aisle. Also, I had several different servers, which was strange to me, and service was slower than I expected. Overall, though, I enjoyed my meal and definitely want to come back for a more upscale night out.
