We showed up at 7 for our reservation and found a sign pointing us to the bar to be seated. We walked back to the bar and ended up waiting almost 10 minutes to be seated and it took another couple walking past us to the dining are for someone to come out from the kitchen to greet and seat us.
Our waiter was super nice and very attentive. He gets full marks for service even if we were only one of three tables in the whole place. The bar was out of soda and tea, which was disappointing and they didn’t offer larger glasses for water, so it was a bit of an annoyance to have to wait for water to be refilled in such small glasses.
The other disappointment was in the menu that night. We have been to Aloi a couple times before and the menu was never as limited as it was that night. Of the main courses there were 3 red meat options(one of which was the burger), scallops, a vegetarian dish and that was it.
Due to lack of options, just about everyone ordered the burger, which was good but the bun was over toasted so the taste of burnt bread over powered everything else.
Dessert was okay, but it was nothing to write home about.
As for the appetizers, I hope they bring back the buffalo cauliflower dish. The Manchurian flavored one was fine, just not as good as the previous.
We will be back to Aloi, but I’ll make sure to check the menu online first to avoid this sort of situation in the future.
We are regulars at Aloi and were initially disappointed to see the entree selections so minimal (out of the vegetarian and 3 beef options with no fish or chicken) and the small plates increased. We made the best of it and ordered 5 small plates and 1 entree (plus 2 desserts) for a table of 4 and were very satisfied and full when we left!
Molly, our waitress, was excellent. Friendly and knowledgeable and fun to talk to.
The atmosphere remains the best in town with a lively, energetic mood and beautiful decor!

Food has been great both times but the service is lacking. This last time o went the service could really only be described as bizarre. It was loud so we could barely hear him and he wouldn’t try to clarify. Disappeared for a while before coming back with our drinks and then the dishes took forever to come out, he didn’t check in or provide us with an update. Then he just disappeared altogether and we suddenly had a new server! It was also boiling hot in the restaurant (could hear people at other tables commenting as well) and he didn’t seem to like it when I pointed that out and asked if he could see about making it cooler even though he himself was visibly sweating.
Great restaurant! Food was wonderful and the menu was varied enough to cover a vegetarian, steak lover and someone who just wanted a simple meal. The steak for two (especially the sides) was a table pleaser!

Nice place, casual ambience. The food was really good, creative and really well executed. The hostess was rude and dismissive and we had to drag information about the menu out of the waiter. Service was fairly prompt despite that.

The menu was a bit intimidating and I had to look up some of the ingredients, but I am glad I did! The appetizers to the entrees were phenomenal! The lamb was tender and cooked just as I requested! It was great night of food and fun!
Just wow! Everything about the restaurant screams class and quality. The wait staff was knowledgeable and understanding. They have a wide variety of items to accommodate dietary restrictions. My boyfriend and I cannot wait to visit again.
This was my 4th dinner and each meal has been more extraordinary than the one before. I love this place, it's my favorite go too! The service is usually amazing it was very good on this visit a little lacking, otherwise not disappointed at all. I cant wait to go back

Aloi was absolutely excellent for our business meeting. They were extremely attentive to our unique needs and accommodating. The manager and staff were friendly and professional. The food was amazing and we would certainly return. We used the outdoor patio for our cocktails, appetizers, and our entire meal. The indoor lighting is extremely dark, so if possible, I would recommend slightly raising the lighting while maintaining the intimate ambiance. Compliments to the chef!
Aloi fits in Scott's Addition. Interesting decor, quirky servers- it's very Richmond.
We went for restaurant week because we'd already been to all the other restaurants on the list during normal season, thought we'd give Aloi a try. The appetizers and main course were soaked and I mean soaked in respective oil. It was wet. I tried really hard to eat the food, maybe it was an off night, but my stomach couldn't handle the small bit I had then, and even that made me pay later. The food would have been great - perfect even if it wasn't wet with oil. The cauliflower could have used more seasoning (not coriander but a warm heat spice) and less oil. The bed of grits that the trout was on was unlike a state of consistency I knew grits capable of being in - airy, fluffy, almost whip cream like - but again the kale on top had waaaay to much oil, made it hard to consume. Disappointed, but I see potential, might try it again.
Appetizers were delicious! Waiter, adorable. We were there during restaurant week, arrived with 3 rather than 2 but we were early -- 5:15 reservation. Place was virtually empty but this seemed to flummox them and they stuck us on the chilly, windy patio, by ourselves. Hmmmm.

We returned to Aloi for the second time, during Restaurant Week. The food & service were excellent. Prix Fixe options for the week were excellent, and we loved the sweet potato soup & kale salad options for first course. Second course option of arctic char was cooked perfectly and served over delicious polenta and kale. We took our dessert options to go (poached pear for myself/chocolate tarte for my spouse), and they were equally delicious. We chose seats at the bar and found it to be a great spot early in the evening. Our bar tender was quite knowledgable & friendly to boot. Service was quick for our 5:45pm reservation and ambience nice. Aloi is classic Danish hygge~ cozy & dark. We will definitely return again soon!

Enjoyed my restaurant week dinner. There was a limited menu. My friend got the Kale salad and thought it was outstanding. I had the sweet potato soup which was good. He had the chicken entree. It was a very generous portion. He enjoyed it. I tried it and it was cooked very welll. Crunchy. I had the trout which was mild but the accompanying greens, onions and peppers were Maybe a bit too strong tasting. Desserts looked pretty and satisfied
Aloi was amazing! The server was so helpful and on top of things. We had a show to go to that we needed to be on time for. The server made sure everything came out on time and that we were all settled up in time to make the show and the Richmond Triangle Players. The food was perfection although they don’t allow for substitutions so if you have dietary restrictions you will have to have them leave off what you’re allergic to and will need to order another side.
The seared tuna appetizer was excellent. The scallops were very good, but there were only three of them, and they were not very large. Hence, the cost of that dish was disproportionate to the amount of the main ingredient. The chocolate torte was very good, but the accompanying brittle could crack a tooth if you are not careful.
First time we visited this restaurant will not be our last. Lots of other things to try.
The food and drinks were fabulous! The bone marrow beignet were amazing and the mussels were very flavorful!
We went on a busy Sat night but had made reservations on Opentable a few weeks beforehand. When we arrived the hostess said we would be sitting at the bar. What? I assume when I’m making a dinner reservation ahead of time I will be getting a dinner table unless told otherwise. So I started off a little upset about the bar seat. Ben the bartender made up for it with his chatting and delicious drinks and recommendations. But of course a busy Sat night the bartenders are busy ,so for the amount we spent I felt cheated on not getting the sit down dinner I had expected. Food was delicious though.

I loved the atmosphere here! We ordered the tuna and mussels for apps, both were very good. For dinner I got the lamb which wasn’t my favorite in terms of taste/seasonings but it was cooked perfectly. Great martinis and great service!
One waiter on a Friday night and service was very slow. My appetizer didn't arrive until my guests appetizer was already finished. Not really a sharing atmosphere as advertised . Food was ok but not exceptional except the chicken entree which was dry and served with dry couscous. Pretty and upscale subdued atmosphere good for a date if food not important

Wonderful service, great cocktails. Very good food. Not crazy about the mushroom paté- a little too sweet for us, but I’m sure some folks gobble it up. Cheese platter was wonderful. Mussels & chicken both luscious. Service excellent.
Food was good but the noise level was too high, there were gnats around the table, and they need to offer ice tea and sodas. The only non alcoholic choice was a pricey lemonade
