This was such a welcome surprise. We sat outside on a beautiful night and everything smelled wonderful. The server was very sweet and offered us a complimentary glass of Prosecco when we arrived. We shared a salad and a pizza and someone else had the seafood pasta dish and loved it. The bread they served is homemade daily. The whole meal was delicious and we discovered by accident as it was next door to The Seafood Bar and Grill, which was also very good. The wine is quite expensive as it is all over the island! Will go back on our next visit.
Great service and food, sat outside, very quiet and private. Great experience overall!
Had fresh made fettuccine. Good. Bit expensive. Too bad view obstructed, but food quality is worth the drive. Good value for this area. Would recommend for good food if ambience is not more important than taste. They have flavor and good service.
We love Italian Cuisine. we've lived in NYC, and have traveled to Italy several times so we "know " good Italian! we were thrilled that Matt, one of the Chef's stopped by our table to tell us about the specials. Nice touch! The Gnocci and the pizza ( best I've had since my last trip to Naples) were fabulous!
Wow!!! All of their ingredients are imported from Italy and it shows. Everything that we tried was sublime.
Authentic Naples style focaccia and and pizza to the best gnocchi you will ever have, the experience only gets better from there. The wonderful ingredients in the hands of the Italian owner/chef made every dish an authentic delight. A large and diverse menu only adds to the magic of the offerings here. From the first bite, I knew we were in for a special experience and I was right.
Experience Italy in Hawaii at Al Vicolo.
Transparently I had reservations about dining w/ friends from Waimea who had heard mixed reviews about Al Vicolo, so we took a chance since listed on Open Table.
The service by Ben was outstanding!!! Starting w/ the cheese & salami appetizer which truly rocked the palate. Our entrees included black pepper pasta w/ Parmesan....sounds simple...complex flavors; the veal Parmesan was done perfectly in a lemon glaze, the calzone w/ side of steamed veggies also outstanding!!!! Lastly the berry panacotta & teramisu topped off a wonderful dinner w/ great friends. Chef David prepared & presented an outstanding experience. So leave the resorts and drive a few miles to Kawaihae for a wonderful dining adventure!!!
Very friendly service.
Awesome thin crust pizza- white anchovies on the Napoli pizza.
Love Italian food and travel to Italy frequently. This is authentic!! Excellent pasta and everything was very fresh! I’ll definitely be back in next visit to the Big Island. This place is a gem and so much better (and better value!) than the restaurants st the resorts....
The pizzas are the only saving grace for this restaurant. Homemade pasta is not cooked properly. I like Al dente, but this was somehow sticking together and yet hard is a rock.. our server tried but too few servers for the crowd. As a matter of fact we walked in and one of the servers said don’t give them to me. Not a great way to be greeted .
Delicious food with a large menu. Caprese dish was shared with several diners. The pasta was cooked perfectly and everyone enjoyed their various sauces. Even the bread was great! It is a little pricey but the food is worth the cost.
On the highway to Hawi, it’s a great stop for lunch or dinner. REAL Italian. Nice menu with a good selection. Great pizza reminiscent of Naples. A little on the expensive side but I would go back again.
We went their for lunch. It’s pretty new so we were the only ones there. The food was amazing but a tad pricey for lunch. I highly recommend this restaurant. We had fresh hot bread with olive oil & fresh grated Parmesan cheese. Delish. A house salad with fresh mozzarella and shaved Parmesan & tomatoes. For our entree we had spaghetti Ala Carbonara. So tasty. We will be back. I would recommend the prices to be reduced for at least lunch.
The gnocchi with a 4 cheese sauce was very good. Lived the outdoor seating on the patio.
Authentic Italian, worth the short drive. Kids loved the hand tossed traditionally made pizza. Service very friendly and attentive. Wouldn’t hesitate to go back.
The food was very good. They are struggling with shortage of employees, so people should be patience. Once they find the right employees, they will be a huge success. We will be back for sure! Even if we have to wait for service.
Great food!! First time diner.
We made a reservation via Open Table, but the hostess did not acknowledge and did not have a table inside. So we sat outside and waited for service. Server was overwhelmed that night, as they were understaffed. Nevertheless she did a good job.
Restaurant was not busy. Waited 1 hour for a house salad and nearly two for two dishes, one of which was wrong. Seafood dish ($28) consisted of a few mussels, clams and a couple of cut up shrimp. Pasta was mediocre at best. Maybe just an off night but probably the worst, and certainly the longest, dining experience my wife and I have ever had. ~$80 meal discounted down to $20. Hopefully they get it together as it’s a good location.
Authentic Italian restaurant. Everything taste so good ! Delizioso !!!
Fabulously delicious food! Homemade pasta and pizza with the perfect crust. Will be back again!
What a nice addition to the Kohala Coast for dining! Authentic Italian food with both simple and complex applications. The pizzas had a delicious thin and crisp crust and the house made pasta was cooked to perfection. The complimentary glass of prosecco was a nice and welcomed touch. I would highly recommend trying this new spot.
Truly wonderful. We flew in on New Years Eve and needed a table for 10. Not only did Al VIcolo accommodated us, they made it a very fun night. Food is good, service even better. It is a bit off the beaten path, but worth the trip!
New Years Eve is probably not the best time to review a restaurant because things understandably get crazy. I made a 6:30pm reservation, but got a call that afternoon saying they couldn’t take us until 7:45pm. Then when we arrived, we were treated as though we didn’t even have a reservation. The staff was very nice, however, and our waiter worked hard. They seemed to sell out of many items after we had already ordered them, but it’s New Years Eve, so I understood. Overall a pleasant meal.
Authentic Italian food on the Big Island is rare and this restaurant could stand up to a New York neighborhood fine spot. They have a Italiannpizza oven from the old country. It’s only been open for 7-8 months but the menu includes excellent pasta choices veal, homemade lasagna and bread.
Very good food and very nice ambience with outdoor dining options. Service was friendly, low key and quick.
They turned us away and said that their open table reservations were all screwed up, even though the restaurant was empty. Wouldn’t even let us eat in the bar. Totally unprofessional. The bartender said she was also the cashier and server and hostess, there were only three people working and they couldn’t serve us. Horrible experience
They turned us away and said they don’t accept reservations through open table
We thought this place was very good and very authentic. The service was not good at all. Crazy slow, inattentive and irritating.
We had such a great experience, we went back and while this could be a dangerous move, as often a special dinner can’t be recaptured, we again enjoyed different dishes upon our return to Al Vicolo. Pizza, Steak teglate, fettuccine, all we’re outstanding as was the Tiramisu. Curtis made the night a great one again!
Authentic Italian in a cozy setting-what an amazing find in Hawaii! Curtis was warm and welcoming, making us feel like we were old friends, he helped us with the menu and service was prompt, food outrageously good. Priced to provide excellent value. We’re only in Hawaii 3 more days but hope to go back-it’s that good!!
I should really rate everything at zero as we walked out. The service was dire. They seemed short staffed and we were prepared to wait had we got a drink and some bread to pass the time. After 50 minutes we gave up and left. Shame as the menu sounds nice and we looked forward to trying a new restaurant on our annual trip to the big island. As we left another diner commented “good decision “, and their party had eaten. Sums it all up. I doubt this place will be here next year.
Exceptional service, very good food and cozy environment. Would highly recommend for a special occasion and/or or or if you'received craving authentic Italian food :)
One of the best meals we have had on the big island over the last 15 year s. Very authentic. Great service from Erika.
Loved the food!
Our server Kavini n staff were so friendly and attentive and food was awesome! Will definitely eat here again next time we're driving by!
Food was fantastic, but small portion sizes, and the service was terrible. Wait staff needs to be properly trained, especially for the prices we are paying for the food. Seems that they are catering to visitors- would be nice if they would offer a Kama'aina rate for locals.
There are precious few authentic Italian Restaurants on the Big Island, and we are so glad Al Vicolo is a short drive to our home. We had dinner there 4 nights ago and are going back tonight. I had the Scoglio which was delicious, but my wife had the calzone. We are bringing a party of 6 back here tonight and I think we are ALL ordering calzone. It is SO GOOD! We lived in NJ for 7 years so we know what good Italian food is, and it has now arrived in the Big Island. Decent wine list, salads are expensive but plentiful. You won’t be disappointed.
We had been looking forward to trying Al Vicolo and we were so disappointed in our experience there. The food was mediocre at best and very overpriced. The service was awful and my husband even got sick afterwards likely due to the fact that his spaghetti carbonara was drowning in oil. This place has lots of potential and I hope that they can get it together. I'm hoping for them that we just experienced an "off" night, but we will likely not be coming back.
We were hoping for a nice Italian dinner but the menu was extremely limited. Half the menu consisted of pizza and the pizza chef was on vacation making it even more limited. They charged for bread which was not a great start and the salads were very expensive, $20 plus dollars per salad. The pasta we chose was cooked very well and tasty and I guess not expensive on Hawaiian pricing but the portion was small.
I would suggest if you want a pizza, this may be the place, if you are looking for a nice Italian dinner, you must keep searching.
