Japanese
The new restaurant, Akira, is on the first floor of Japan House London.
Named after Chef SHIMIZU Akira, the restaurant presents an authentic Japanese dining experience based on Akira’s ‘trinity of cooking’ principles – food, tableware and presentation.
Visit for lunch or dinner to experience Japanese-style omotenashi hospitality and the theatre of cooking as chefs prepare dishes reflecting Japan’s diverse food offer, using seasonal ingredients over roaring robata (charcoal grill) flames.
Highlights of the menu include imaginative sushi specialities and chargrilled kushiyaki skewers made from umami-rich wagyu beef, pork, chicken, seafood and vegetables.
The Japanese staple of rice will be prepared in a donabe, clay pot.

The service when we entered was lovely and so was the waiter. However as the dinner went on we had to poor our own wine and water multiple times. Towards the end of the dinner the service was non existent. Nobody asked us if we wanted coffee/tea and nothing was offered as an end to the meal.

The first two courses were lovely. The soup didn’t really fit the meal. The main course was nice but quite small and I do believe it should have some rice added to it. The dessert was slightly disappointing and a bit heavy to finish a 5 course meal with.

Great food and ambience. Perhaps a bit expensive for everyday, but worth it from time to time.

The food was very average for the price that we were paying. It does not compare well with other similar Japanese restaurants in London. The bento dishes were poorly done compared to Engawa, and the wagyu was tough and chewy.

The service was terrible, with waiters constantly forgetting and dropping things. Our waiter got our order wrong despite me pointing out everything on the menu to be on the safe side. He then came back and rudely questioned me about why did I not point it out when he read it back to me. I told him I only ordered four items and counted it out to him which he suddenly ‘remembered’ that he got it wrong.

The organisation of staff was very chaotic and I noticed that lots of people around me were also getting wrong orders and waiting on forgotten orders.

The place is nice and clean. Food was excellent if you are craving for authentic Japanese sushi/sashimi. We had the Robata and Sushi Omakasa and there were plenty of of flavorful and fresh sushi/sashimi/grilled to try! They serve the food in cute bento boxes and hot stone.

The staff were courteous. They went on their way to prepare a simple but thoughtful b-day cake for my wife and green tea mochi for my son both of which not on the menu. Overall, Akira reminded us of our memorable Japanese dining experience when we visited the country in 2015. Arigato!

Akira has the best Japanese cuisine in London, and that is a fact. The restaurant is minimal but cosy, although honestly you’ll be too focused on their fantastic dishes to even notice your surroundings.

Second time in a few months - less impressed than first time - lost some of the attention to detail in presentation and balance in flavors.

We came for quick lunch. The food is low quality and not Japanese. I saw very angry chef starring at us, at all guests looking like emperor of Akira Restaurant. We felt extremely intimidated by his toxic energy. We felt extremely unwelcome by his behaviour.

Always a good place for dinner as it’s never overly busy or cramped. Counter is a nice experience. Order carefully and it’s actually very reasonably priced. Don’t go too early or it will be really quite.

Completely over priced, don’t come here unless you want to waste money. Dessert was nice and that’s about it. Plenty of great Japanese food out there.

Ambient rather elegant, wide selection of food and very tasty. Nothing like any Japanese I tried before, quality really makes a difference. Quite pricey, but for a good reason: one doesn't leave the restaurant unsatisfied. Will definitely come back to try some other dish.

Wonderful food. The only thing we didn’t like was that the sake we ordered, at £60 a bottle, arrived at our table already opened. It should be opened at the table at that price. Otherwise a lovely meal for a special occasion.

Largely disappointing I am sad to report. Maybe this is fine if you’ve never tasted real Japanese food, but the lack of Japanese staff says it all for me. Mediocre sushi, great sake (gotta give them that), a bento box that left a lot to the imagination and then this incomprehensible hot stone situation of mixed grill and tempura (only spring onions, none of the delicious stuff that makes tempura great) with a weird ‘side’ of sushi. The food wasn’t bad at all (notwithstanding some tough fatty tuna) but certainly not worth the price. I’m disappointed

Your manager has extremely bad attitude, he is not appropriate person for service in Japanese restaurant. He doesn’t have respect mind to customers. He shouldn’t have taken the position otherwise the restaurant rates go down and Japanese restaurant ranks are declined either. Such a shame experience. Actually, one of my friend who lives in around the restaurant told me that you should not go there, cuz not good restaurant but I wanted to try once so I just chose there. I’ll never go again also never recommend my friends.

The food is outstanding. Ambience average (not complaining about the minimalist look, just about how cheap the leather benching and how faux the back the wood panels in the seating area looked. The look of the counter and of the bar is a bit better: minimalism without savings, at least). Service could be more attentive. We had to call their attention on more than a couple of occasions. We were also wondering why the scarcity of Japanese waiter personnel (and how we could get their attention). Thank God the Japanese are in the kitchen! The quality of the food and of the cooking is impressive. A journey for the palate. Simple and yet outstanding.

The service was extremely poor. Non existent. And the food was really uninspiring. Eating cream cheese in sushi is so not Japan house style.
