AKEMI is the new name we bestow upon the beauty that is good food with good people in a good place.
seaweed, tofu, green onion
choose grilled or teriyaki
They were a bit understaffed. No hostess to check in diners arriving. The server was pleasant enough but short and abrupt. Long wait for sushi to arrive.
Sushi was decent and the space and decor were nice.
I took out a friend on his birthday, with his wife, and we got several appetizers including their fabulous brussel sprouts, and several rolls including the great scallop role, and the meal was stunning.
A wonderful Japanese restaurant!
The service was below average. Our waiter was very cold to us and only came to our table 2 times during the visit. We had to ask other employees to assist us. The food was good. Some of the quality was off on the food. The karage had either bones or cartilage in it. The teriyaki beef was quite rare in some parts. The garlic edamame had a rather unpleasant smell and made it difficult to stomach. The overall meal was enjoyable but for the price excellent quality should be expected and delivered to the customer. Combining the subpar food quality and the inexistent service the experiences was just a little below average.
Went expecting good sushi but not what we got. Less than average. The server did not keep track our orders
The place was nice and service was fine. The food quality was not up to par with other sushi places we’ve been and for the cost of it.
Consistently delicious. Friendly staff. You may want to make a reservation to ensure you can eat when you wish. Take-out orders often take longer than what you are told, especially at dinner time, so plan accordingly.
The food was amazing definitely coming back thank you
Cleanliness was an issue, all of my friends and I experienced stomach discomfort at the end of the night after our dinner reservation. The service was terrible. Doting servers, yet they somehow forgot to bring us our rice and water for over half an hour. They were rude, rushing us and making us feel unwelcome for our reservation. The server dropped our bill down without asking us if we were ready. The sushi was not that good, especially for the price. There’s way better Japanese restaurants out there that are more authentic and affordable than this place. They rely on their “ambiance” to hide the fact that the service and food is subpar.
Maybe they just reopened, but understaffing and lack of training was not the issue. For some reason, we had several people serving us which led to miscommunication and missing food/water. Also there was a lady serving who never changed her gloves… gross. Probably why we got sick
Very nice selection, well prepared and presented, service was pleasant and timely.
In did not dine at this restaurant
Service is excellent, food superb!
This is my "go to" sushi restaurant! The food is delicious and the sushi is so fresh. In addition, the presentation of each dish is so unique and beautiful.
The service is great! I highly recommend this restaurant for a date night, dinner with friends or a large celebration (there is a separate area for a large party).
No other sushi restaurant compares!!
We were seated for our 5:45 reservation on time which we appreciated and received a table to our liking. We both selected the same item: Combination plate which included miso soup, teriyaki salmon, mixed tempura, rice and cole slaw. The salmon and tempura were very tasty and we were happy with the service and our dining experience.
Great Sushi and food. The lighting inside was a little dim, but overall a great experience.
Upon arrival temperatures were taken and had us use hand sanitizer.
The restaurant was crowded and tables are close together. There was a party going on in the next room so added extra noise. Had a reservation and was seated right away, but then it took a long time before our order was taken. Salad and soup came on time, but then dinner item was served before our sushi orders.
The food is excellent and at ambience is pleasant. Prices are competitive.
Overall a pretty blah experience. I know that understaffing is a problem across the board at restaurants right now, but the experience fell short of a low expectation. Timing was terrible. Food was mediocre.
Food was great. Took a great while to get seated. Once we got seated we had to ask for menus.
Celebrated our son’s graduation. Great food great service. We had a terrific time.
Excellent ambience and stylish plating gives way to lackluster food, especially at the price. Large sushi menu, but the smallest pieces of nigiri I've ever seen, and low quality cuts of fish.
Went here for mother’s day. We had a reservation they still took 15 mins to get our table together when the restaurant wasn’t even full. Then half the tables food was forgotten about, so we didn’t even eat together. They never offered to comp anything. They also barely checked on us, we had to repeatedly flag them down to even come by our table. The food is mediocre. Not great and way overpriced! Never again! Horrible on all levels. I dont see how they are still in business.
Outdoor Berkeley dining at its finest. Prompt service, delicious food, an amazing Solano Ave dining experience.
We reserved an outdoor table, which means the front of the restaurant, on the sidewalk. There were only three tables outside, which meant plenty of space and air for everyone. The BBQ ribs were to die for and everything else was very good. Great service as well.
We LOVE Akemie. So much so, that we drive from Marin and wouldn't think of going anywhere else for our Japanese Food. The menu is excellent, we love the various dining options including the sushi, the staff are so nice and friendly.
Service was a little slow
The food is great, but it’s a overpriced. Ambiance is fine... it just doesn’t match up to the price tag at all.
Delicious food, great service, beautiful decor. We loved it
The quality of the fish was excellent and they served large pieces.
Slow service after initial serving
Totally lovely experience tip to toe every time. Wonderful attentive service, fantastic food always with elevated preparation, in a beautiful space. Now, still great for take-away. Highly recommend.
My wife and I walked into the restaurant, and there was a gentleman playing the electric guitar. He was playing Jazz music, and it was pretty good. They asked where we wanted to sit, which I thought was very neat, so we got to choose where we sat that was open. Everything seemed to be going well, until the servers started coming out. They seemed like college students who quite didn't know what a restaurant dress code should have been, multiple of them wearing blue jeans, which I personally don't like at a restaurant since it seems very unprofessional, came by and asked if we were ready to order. We got the menu like two minutes ago. So we delayed it, and asked for 2 cups of hot water. When the lady came back with them, she placed the cups like she was throwing them down! The table made a big "drop" sound, yet she didn't care and just walked by. I have been a server myself, so I know it could be busy and the cup could be hot, but she was being rude. And after we ordered, when the food came out, the lady just dropped the plate and left. There was another student also wearing blue jeans come by and fill up my water bottle. It was cute, but not professional. Overall, not satisfied with the service, but food was okay.
Good food, nice setting. Hostess was talking to a customer when we arrived, (we had a reservation), then turned her back on us to work on her computer with no acknowledgment or "I'll be with you in a minute." We waited, and waited... not a good interaction. Other than that, we enjoyed our evening.
Excellent sushi. Combination plates are delicious. We go here often.
The food was very good and the shrimp and seafood were very fresh. Akemi is a nice site but the noise level because of the concrete floors was very loud. sErvice was slow. The check-in station backed up and people coming through the door were bunched together. It took them 10 minutes to seat us and then, we waited 20 minutes to order. It was Berkeley Restaurant week and I think they were surprised by how popular the event was. The family enjoyed everything and the remodel of the old Miyuki was tastefully done.
The service at this restaurant was the worst I have ever experienced. The food is good but I will not be back until the service improves.
We love Akemi, but Restaurant Week may not be the ideal time to visit them. Service was poor (2 of our party of 5 didn't get their main course when the others did, took a bit of effort to finally have them delivered--maybe 20 minutes after the rest?) Our waitress seemed to disappear after bringing the first 3 entrees, for most of the rest of the night we had whoever we could flag down. One other "we're overwhelmed" thing: of the 3 yuzo panna cottas (which were delish), one was noticeably smaller, not a full portion.
This is the second time we've dined at Akemi where the service fell flat (the other was not a restaurant week, and was a couple of years ago). Maybe something to work on?
We were very pleased to see that Akemi responded and focused upon our request for a quieter table and put us in a separate dining room. That was lovely, however, we did not realize that around the corner, there would be live music. That is a plus, except when three very old friends- with some hearing issues- want to catch up, it becomes a challenge.
The service was good except our meals were delivered at different times. One friend received her food very quickly after we all had excellent miso soup. I got mine next and it was a full 10 minutes before our other friend received her main course. It was never explained why that happened. The restaurant became more and more busy, however, we were there early which should have counted.
Service and attentiveness was somewhat brusque; it's not Japan. Attractive presentation and dining area.
I had the $30 prix fixe menu - miso soup, pork gyoza, vegetarian ramen, and mochi. Miso was average, gyoza was tasty with two nice sauces - crispy on the outside and nice texture inside, ramen was excellent with fresh spinach, firm plain tofu, mushrooms, and other stuff. Broth was very tasty and hot. Noodles were tender and good. Mochi was perfect. Service was spotty. The ramen came before the gyoza and I had to wait a long time for the bill and to pay. Watching the sushi chefs was a treat and I will definitely go back to try the sushi.
Great place to meet for lunch. Excellent lunch combination selections that are delicious and of great value.
