From the family that brought you Trattoria La Siciliana—a fixture of Berkeley’s Elmwood district for the past twenty years—Agrodolce is a sister restaurant located in the heart of Berkeley’s Gourmet Ghetto. We are housed in a beautiful brick building that is equipped with a full bar and outdoor seating. Serving authentic Sicilian food, the type you’d only expect to find in the alleys of Palermo, Agrodolce features unique and truly authentic food.
On The night we were there , the service on the part of some of the staff was a bit too casual (some might say inattentive and gruff). We were in the room with the kitchen which was quite noisy.
The food was good but not outstanding as we remembered it to be.
We have eaten there before and had much better service and food.
Disorganized service, mediocre food, high prices, limited Covid protocols.
Always the best food and the best wine! That's why I keep coming back!
nice dinner al fresco. the food was good and the service efficient. Wines are not cheap.
The food and service at Agrodolce is top-drawer. We were greeted warmly and seated promptly. The availability of outdoor seating is excellent - the only problem is noisy traffic. But we enjoyed it so much that we will be back soon - just maybe sitting a little further from the street!
We waited over 15 min outside the restaurant to be even acknowledged. We even called the phone twice to see if someone would come up from the back and no one did. We just walked to another restaurant instead of waiting any longer.
Delicious authentic Italian food, something a bit different from what you usually see.
Super attentive service. Thé boss watches and checks in on you too.
And to too it off, some very nice live jazz music. We sat outside, it was absolutely lovely.
Chicken was disappointing, it should have come with pasta or potatoes on the side, and the sauce/broth had pieces of chicken bone in it. The clams in the seafood pasta were not fresh and tasted spoiled. Still love this place though. Mushroom ravioli, lamb shank, pork ragu are amazing though.
Our friend treated us to dinner for my husband's birthday. We had an early dinner so few people were inside the restaurant. All three of us had main courses that were good, not great. We split a couple of salads which were even better than the main course. It was decided that the tiramisu was the best part of the meal.. In fact the tiramisu was the best ever.
Never fails to disappoint! Outside seating creates wonderful ambiance and we were lucky enough to be there for the small jazz ensemble that often plays at Agrodolce. Food was fantastic, timed perfectly and service was excellent.
We had the BEST meals. And that means 12 people out of 12 people had amazing meals!!!! What a fantastic restaurant. We will make it a staple. Angelo is such a darling man too!
Sitting outdoors was beautiful in his outdoor seating. I haven't been there in 2 yrs and was so excited to come back. The food is the BEST!!!! Their garlic dip and bread is something I crave the next day haha. We had calamari mista, salmon, ravioli, & puttanesca, and a bottle of sangiovese wine. No one can do puttanesca like this place. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. And Angelo is always entertaining! Great place to share a birthday or anniversary. Memorable food and service.
Very good Sicilian food and excellent service. We used the outdoor facilities and it was very enjoyable. Always dependable for a good meal.
The terrible service overshadowed the good food.
It was almost 30 minutes before a waiter showed up and that was the last time we saw him until he brought the check. The servers were running around in chaos for no reason.
We were really excited to try this restaurant since it was really well reviewed and the food sounded amazing.
Not only it took forever for a waiter to take our order or even bring us water, but the food took a really long time to arrive. Most the dishes were ok, but the salmon “cooked to perfection”, as advertised, was so overcooked and dry (and the potatoes that came with it were absolutely undercooked) that I had to send it back, which I rarely do. The replacement was better cooked but very salty (and the potatoes were bad again), but I ended up eating it anyway since by then my whole family had finished theirs.
Really hope this was just a bad night, but it was just a really disappointing evening.
Wonderful food, beautifully presented. Thanks so much
Agrodolce is our go-to restaurant. Food is great. Service is excellent. And it stands out for being casual, down-to-earth, and fun. The folks that work there enjoy their jobs and it shows.
Was hoping for a superb dining experience. It was just average. Chairs for outdoor seating on patio were very uncomfortable.
We asked for our two dishes to be served separately: tuna course first, followed by octopus course. Both came at same time. Bread would have been much better if heated.
Pannacotta was mediocre and raspberry sauce/jam had way too many seeds.
We came to Agrodolce to celebrate my birthday because my wife had had an excellent experience all around the last time she ate here. Unfortunately this experience left much to be desired. Before we moved tables we were seated in a room just across from where the dishes were prepared and picked up by the wait staff - really noisy and busy. The wait staff seemed very stressed by the crowd (spilled water on the table and didn’t clean it up - we had to ask) and all dishes were mediocre at best - all were heavily salted and oily; the end of the meal espressos were served in espresso cups without saucers. That said, the staff was accommodating for the birthday and friendly. Too bad - we were looking forward to a better experience.
Food was very good once it was served. The waiter was very busy but failed to communicate that service would be slow. It was a major issue That the owners should address with the wait staff. Otherwise, this is a very good restaurant.
Great Southern Italian/Sicilian dishes and Italian wine list.
Food and wine choices are the best! Doing the best they can with COVID. Sat outside along Shattuck, Heaters keep area comfortable at night.
Service is a little choppy, new people?
Food overcomes this and the occasional bus. Wine list reminds you of when we could sit inside, watch old Italian movies, and enjoy.
GO! You deserve the experience and they need us.
For authentic Sicilian cuisine, AgroDolce can't be beat! They offer many wonderful dishes, but for us the all-star's all-star is the "bucatini chi finucchiede," which is commonly called "pasta con le sarde" (past with sardines) in Sicily. Instead of a tomato sauce, this dish bathes bucatini (which looks like a thick spaghetti, only with a hole/tube down the center) in an unusual--and scrumptious--mix of sardines, anchovies, pine nuts, fennel, sweet onion, currants, and saffron. It's so irresistible that even after ordering it dozens of times, and telling ourselves "this time, we have to order something else," we order it anyway. Then we eat it, and we want to eat it again. The staff at AgroDolce are always very warm and helpful, and every visit there feels like coming home.
It was a cold night, so we ate inside the restaurant versus at their outdoor table. We would have preferred to dine outside due to Covid. The restaurant checked our vaccination cards and had tables spread out, we felt safe dining indoors. The food was very delicious. We will come back again.
Great food with friends
The pacing from the kitchen was awful. Our 3 entrees arrived separately over a 10 minute period.
The busboy was the best part of the service. He interacted with us and was happy to help when we had to ask for a serving spoon, share plates, refills, etc. The waitress and waiter would say sure but never came back! There was a suuuper long wait to see the dessert menu as well as getting the check. The busboy basically took care of us.
We sat outside on a warm night and that was nice. The table spacing was good. Some plates were delicious and others just so-so.
I wish the busboy well but we won’t be coming back any time soon!
Offers Sicilian dishes not generally found in standard Italian restos. From the bread, with herbed olive oil dipping to dessert, we enjoyed it all. Regulars now
Love this place! Local gem with great food and a festive yet pleasant atmosphere. It has become our go-to spot in Berkeley. Great for dates, entertaining out of town guests, and also a nice family dinner.
We were celebrating my sons’ 25th birthday. I understand being short staffed, but one entree arrived 15 minutes after the other entrees. No one came to check on us after our food was delivered. No ones asked if we’d like another cocktail. No one came to reassure us that our last entree would arrive soon. One of the side dishes, kale with pine nuts, wasn’t good and when I mentioned it the waitress she was silent. She back a few minutes later with the check having not asked if we wanted coffee or dessert. Again , we were there to celebrate my sons 25th bday! Our other waiter returned and made sure that dessert was delivered with happy birthday song but it was stressful getting there. The entrees were all superb but it was an overall stressful experience.
The service wasn't that great but the food was really good.
Food was delicious
Food took a considerable amount of time to come out, and none of the entrees came out together.
So the food was delicious as always. And the wait staff kind and efficient. Why the negative review on service? Well first off I never leave reviews but I’m finally feeling compelled. We’ve dined here on many occasions and every single time I’m struck by how truly horrific the manager is. He moves around through the restaurant verbally berating his wait staff and being “angry guy” in general. When I’m paying to go out and enjoy a nice meal with my husband, I prefer not to be subjected to his rants and raves. This last time, he walked into the restaurant as I was waiting to use the restroom. He literally shouted something like “Gary, get those two people out of table to now. They’re just sitting there listening to the jazz music!” Um not how you speak about your patrons. And if you must flip the table, quietly communicate that to your staff. Very off putting. That guy is a huge buzz kill
Love this place
Owners are super friendly and food is so authentic and amazing!
Tried this restaurant for the first time and was very pleased with the food and the service was amazing! Our server (I’m sorry I didn’t catch his name), was extraordinary. My husband’s pasta wasn’t quite what he was expecting and our server offered to bring him something else and was very apologetic. We had some great appetizers and bread with their awesome olive oil dipping sauce so he wasn’t too hungry and kindly declined a second dish. The rest of our group’s dinners were great!! Polpette, Ravioli & Porchetta were fabulous. Then after we finished our dinner, he came by with a complimentary tiramisu which was outstanding. When the bill came, there was no charge for the pasta either… that to me deserved a huge tip!! We will be back for sure!! Buonissimo!!
Everything was delicious! We always order too much its hard to choose. You can make a full meal out of a few appetizers and maybe share a main. Lots of great choices, authentic and tasty!
