From the family that brought you Trattoria La Siciliana—a fixture of Berkeley’s Elmwood district for the past twenty years—Agrodolce is a sister restaurant located in the heart of Berkeley’s Gourmet Ghetto. We are housed in a beautiful brick building that is equipped with a full bar and outdoor seating. Serving authentic Sicilian food, the type you’d only expect to find in the alleys of Palermo, Agrodolce features unique and truly authentic food.
Delicious lamb shanks. Great waiters. Lovely.
I had tasteless cefalu salad and an excellent side of meatballs. My dining partner had a sardine/anchovy dish with pasta, which was mushy and very bland.
The restaurant is in a charming building and the welcome was warm. The menu is extensive and very Italian. On Saturday night, the place became very crowded and was so lively it was difficult to converse at times. As the restaurant filled up, the service and kitchen seemed overburdened by the crowd. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the experience (the leisurely pace of the service also felt Italian) and we will certainly go back. The food is very reasonably priced too. It would be a great place for a family dinner because the lively atmosphere would accommodate children comfortably and the kids and adults could find things on the menu to enjoy.
Service hit and miss- please come prepared
The owner guy should refrain from derogatory comments to his staff as some of know enough Italian to know what’s being said right next to our table.
Every meal is delicious here. The service is sometimes slow, only because it gets so packed. Having said that, slow down and relax and enjoy your meal! The servers really want you to enjoy your time there.
Lovely Place, I will be going back. The food was awesome.
Walking distance from Berkeley Rep, excellent dinner choice!
The food here is excellent. I want it to succeed, as it does a really credible job with authentic Sicilian cuisine. The service is always poor, however, and was absolutely abysmal last time we dined. The kitchen and the dining room appear to be seriously understaffed. To make matter worse, the owner is always yelling at the poor overworked staff. It is not their fault, it is his trying to cut corners to maximize profit. He needs to bite the bullet and hire enough staff to cook and provide the excellent fare that is being completely compromised by the poor service.
The homemade mushroom ravioli is exceptional! The menu offers a nice variety of items.
This is my second time here with my significant other, and we enjoyed the food just as much as the last time. I got the minestrone and porchetta (which I discovered is pronounced por-quetta/ketta), he got the ravioli (he liked it so much last time he decided to get it again) and we split a panna cotta. Everything was really quite delicious and well-executed even though the restaurant was incredibly busy with peak dinner hour on a Saturday night.
Unfortunately, the restaurant was very busy and they were short staff. The staff was great, but the waits took away from the experience.
We went at 6:00 on a Saturday night. By all means , make a reservation! But get there early as they seem to take more reservations than tables. They also squeeze people in. We were a party of 5, so they just added a place setting at a table for 4.
There were not enough waiters, and not enough cooks. We had to get to the theater and were seriously wondering if we would.
But the food was fantastic ( except the fish) and the portions were large. We had two kinds of risetto and an order of mushroom ravioli. We will go back, but not on a weekend or when we have to go somewhere.
We had a very good meal there, marred only by the service. The wait staff was friendly but very disorganized, bringing dishes to the incorrect tables, taking a long time to bring certain items, etc. Particularly problematic was that there was more than a 10 minute delay between when the first person and the last person at our table received their entrees. There wasn't much of an explanation for this delay (or any of the others) and just the most casual of apologies. No attempt to make it right by comping a dish or anything else to indicate that this was out of the ordinary.
Authentic southern Italian restaurant in every way!
Food not tasty, eg, gravy on pork chop bland. Service lagged, eg, didn’t seem organized, didn’t give bill till I went up to waiter.
Had malanzane appetizer that could have been cooked a bit more, was a little tough, but flavorful, could also have been two slices rather than one. . . minimal additional cost to them.
Generally good food, moderate prices for the bay area.
I am rating this restaurant poorly for 2 reasons. From the moment we arrived we found the owner berating and shouting at the staff, who appeared quite frightened of him. They tried their best and I think could have provided much better service if the owner backed off. They were even afraid to seat us where we requested, because "the owner will get mad". Really?!! I just returned from Sicily so was anxious to try the food. It was nothing like Sicilian food. The caponata which had every day for 2 weeks is completely different in Sicily. So I will definitely not be returning there!
Food was, as always, delicious.
It was busy and fun! The staff was very friendly and treated everybody very well. The food was delicious! We will plan to be back.
Love the interior, especially the movie projected on the wall. Fun music! The place was packed, the owner knew many patrons and greeted them as they came in. Food is very tasty. Service spotty and we waited a long time for our order to be taken. Easier to wait if have drink and some bread in hand! Overall looking forward to a return visit.
Worst meal that I can recall.
Should have left instead of waiting 45min past our reservation.
Just went downhill from there.
A complete disappointment.
Always a great dinner in a truly family restaurant
We had a wonderful Valentines Day dinner at Agrodolce! We were attended by the chef personally, and every course was innovative and delicious. We especially enjoyed the ravioli, even asking for more bread to sop up the delectable sauce! The wine pairing suggested by the chef was a perfect accompaniment to the meal.
I recommend the swordfish. Prices reasonable compared to Brooklyn
Always amazing! Authentic food and service
Food here has always been delicious, but sometimes getting what you ordered has been slow, so we had not been back fir a while. It was a busy Saturday night, but we were seated immediately, and got our food promptly.
Went the last night of Restaurant Week so it was not a surprise that the restaurant was swamped. Except for our waiter disappearing for a half-hour for a smoke (and a charming back-up on his first day on the job picking up the slack), the evening was spectacular. My sister’s butternut squash risotto was so scrumptious, I ordered a second helping to take home.
Don’t accept Open Table reservations, so we had to wait an additional 30 minutes before being seated. Initial seating was a very small table meant for 4 max, though they tried to fit all 5 of us. However, the waiter noticed our space issue and helped us move to a larger table. The service was great after the initial poor reception, and the food was amazing.
We had a fantastic birthday celebration at Agrodolce. It took a little while to take our order but the restaurant was packed and the waiter apologized. After taking our order, everything went very smoothly. The food was very tasty, the attention from the staff incredible, we had a fantastic night. On top of that our table was in a corner, which made it even more special. I did requested a nice table when I made the reservation and I appreciated that they honored my request. We will definitively go back!
I think they were understaffed. The service appeared slow for everyone in the restaurant. I felt bad for the waiters.
We took advantage of a fixed menu and restaurant week with a table of 8. Both menus were delicious and well cooked. The mushroom ravioli was the top dish by vote. Ambience is difficult due to noise and confines.
Amazing service and quality food. Will be back :)
Loud! But in a good way. Owner was waiting tables and had a fun gregarious personality. He enthusiastically answered all of our questions about the food.
Love this place! Amazing food and fun lively atmosphere. You won’t be disappointed.
We recently went to Agrodolce with another couple on a Saturday during restaurant week. They were clearly not quite fully staffed when we arrived at 5:15 for our 5:30 reservation. We were seated in a few minuites, however it took awhile until clearly one of the owners saw that we hadn't been asked if he could take our drink order. From then on service was great. We all ordered from the fix prix "reataurant week menu" consisting of 5 courses for 40 dollars. Some of the dishes were better than others, so overall I would rate the food as good . The pasta ragu dish was absolutly delicious as was the cannoli served as the the dessert. Ambiance is casual with a hip typical berkely neighboor vibe . The placed was packed by the time we left at 8:15 with lots of millenials waiting for their table (we were all seniors that dinned early , of course) . Good selection on the cocktails and the house red was very good. Overall a 4 star evening and would definately visit again ! We had been to their sister restaurant a couple of times: Tattortila(spelling) on college which is also great.
Great great great food.
We had a RSVP at 730 pm and we were in our table an hour after. The wait was totally worth it, the food was delicious and then service was really fast after we were seated. Definitely coming back
Superb Sicilian food, lively ambience, and decent, friendly service. It's extremely popular, so always crowded, and they've jammed the place with tables. Noise level is extremely high. But good food in crowded, noisy spaces is authentically Sicilian, right? This is one of my favorite spots in Berkeley.
Food was great. Went on restaurant week so it was extra busy, extra loud in the back room and a little cramped. Kept getting jostled by the staff trying to serve in tight quarters. Food was beautifully prepared southern Italian. True to the essence of Italy. Would try again (in the front room) on a less busy night.
