Across from Millennium park and along Chicago’s Cultural Mile, Acanto Restaurant + Wine Bar is a treasured destination for those who appreciate authentic and approachable Italian food in a conversation-friendly atmosphere. Acanto serves seasonally-driven Italian cuisine from both regions of Italy utilizing artisanal ingredients from Midwest farmers and producers. Acanto boasts one of the most lauded wine programs in the US, including a 3-star rating by World of Fine Wine and a two-glass “Best of Excellence” rating by Wine Spectator. The libations menu is rounded out by Italian classics including spritzes and negronis along with craft cocktails, beer, and spirits.

The word Acanto is the Italian translation of Acanthus, the flowery leaf featured prominently in Roman architecture. Famed architect Louis Sullivan used Acanthus in his distinctive terra cotta ornamentation found on the facade of the historically-landmarked building that houses Acanto.

Acanto is a lovely place for lunch or dinner in Chicago. The staff is great. Our server was especially attentive and made our experience even more enjoyable. The food is delicious and because one of our party was celebrating a birthday we were treated to Tiramasu. Can't say enough good things about Acanto.

Acanto provided wonderful ambiance with excellent, friendly service, and some of the best food we have eaten at a restaurant in years! We were three friends enjoying our visit to Chicago, and Acanto could not have been a better choice for our special dinner. It was an exceptional experience that we will not soon forget!

Got the apple salad, roasted squash pansotti, and tiramisu, and it was all soooooo delicious. Probably the best meal I’ve ever had. Server was great too! Went for an early lunch on a Monday and it was not busy at all.

Food tasted really good, but the capeletti and bucatini portion isn’t enough for one person. Wine was great as well as the dessert.

Food was absolutely delicious. Pork chop was tender and flavorful with caramelized onions so yummy. Veal Marsala nicely crusted. Lovely thin asparagus as side. Cappelletti also excellent. The inside is kind of crowded and noisy although very cozy looking. We opted to sit outside, which is more than amply heated and quiet as we were the only table filled. Waitperson was helpful, upbeat, and very pleasant.

Went for a meal before a show at the orchestra hall. The restaurant is smaller than I thought it would be but very nice, each table was lit with a real candle. Started off with bruschetta(classical not the menu way), was a little oily but overall good. Chicken Piccata (added pasta for an extra charge) was excellent, sauce was lemony and I was told the chicken was cooked to perfection. I had the Cappelletti which was very good and vegetarian friendly. To drink I tried the Stappi, not for me but if you enjoy grapefruit definitely for you. For desserts we tried: Chocolate Gelato, Torta Bruciata and the Classic Tiramisu. All of the deserts were delicious and the tiramisu is big enough to share. Overall a great experience and would be perfect for a romantic/intimate dinner.

Very Very good dinner. Small intimate setting despite being on Michigan avenue.
The host was excellent and offered an outdoor seat when we were too early for our reservation but we opted to sit at the bar and have an appetizer and a glass of wine. The glass of wine was one of the best I've had, a Barolo, or something close to that. Delicious. The Bartender, Will, was friendly and excellent. We were seated and had the Porkchop and Squash Ravioli. Also delicious. Phillip was our waiter and did an excellent job. Very professional. Would recommend.

My first experience at this restaurant a month or so back was extremely good. The drinks, salad, mushroom pizza, fried seafood appetizer were all excellent. This time the salad was overly dressed, the pizzas were no longer available even though I was there at the exact same time of day I was last time which meant that I was forced to choose among a number of options that I really didn’t want. My husband got a $30 pasta dish which was just so so. However the $10 Mushroom polenta was fantastic, As was the arancini appetizer and the dessert. It’s a mixed bag but if you’re going for casual dining plan on spending a lot of money unless you can find a way to limit your choices to the things that are really worth spending on. The atmosphere, however, is superb. Candles on every table and a very nice warm clubby feel. It definitely is a wonderfully romantic spot in downtown Chicago. Service varies from extremely gracious to a little bit too much of a hard sell and stock phrases thrown at you like not a problem. Well of course it’s not a problem. I am the customer and you’re the server. It should never be a problem and that phrase should be deleted forever from servers’ vocabulary. I will definitely go back to this restaurant but plan on remaining firm in my choices— and definitely persisting in trying to get a pizza. If I can get the choices I want in a restaurant I will relax and not worry so much about spending money, in fact I will spend more money because now it’s really turning into an occasion, an enjoyable one because my desires are being fulfilled. It’s only when you can’t get what you want that that issue becomes particularly thorny.

The food and service at this restaurant were very good. Our server recommended the pasta dishes, as the pasta is made fresh in-house each day. They were very good, especially the rigatoni with lamb ragout. The polenta side dish (with mushrooms) was excellent, maybe even better than the pasta. The two desserts we tried were both very good (tiramisu and a cheesecake with fresh berries). We sat in the heated and covered outside area, which was fine, but the inside of the restaurant has a lot more atmosphere. The service was attentive and friendly. The food was expensive overall, but we were also paying for the convenience of eating on Michigan Avenue steps away from the tourist attractions.

The food was overpriced & the pasta dishes were bland. Bread was not served with dinner which is surprising for an Italian restaurant. There are much better restaurants in Chicago & I wished we had decided on one of those.

Came here for a family dinner in the city celebrating my boyfriends birthday! We showed up a little early but they were thankfully still able to seat us as long as we sat outside - which ended up being perfect because the dining room was pretty loud… Our waiter was friendly and the food was a 10/10. Everyone ordered something different and it was all delicious! I LOVE that they offer a GF pasta option that actually tastes real & is cooked to perfection 🙌🏼 Our waitress brought out gelato for the birthday boy and it was the BEST gelato any of us have ever eaten (and two have been to Italy)!!! For sure recommend and do NOT skip the gelato dessert.

The restaurant was very crowded at 5:30 and it was unexpected at that time. The table was right by bar which was super crowded. Seemed to have no capacity limits for Covid. No one wearing masks except waiters. Service good , but when asked if we could split dishes and still get separate checks was told yes. We had separate checks but all the split dishes ended up on our bill with 8 people. Plus entree was 34$ and waiter asked if one of us wanted pasta with it and they said ok and another 10$ was added on without mention. Just noodles . Food was tasty although a bit oily. Deserts were outstanding , although very expensive. Over ok but very loud. Prob wouldn’t go back.

This was a very enjoyable dining experience. Serving sizes were generous and we found that virtually any item we ordered could be divided between the two of us and still be completely satisfying. The food was perfectly prepared and the flavors were great. All the staff were friendly and the waitress was especially helpful to answer any of our questions, and to accommodate our requests. Overall, we were quite pleased to have chosen Acanto for this occasion and we are likely to return in the future.

We ate on the patio and the weather was perfect for our meal. We had the bruschetta appetizer and it was very good. The goat cheese and prosciutto on top was very different and tasty. Also tried the meatballs and olives which were pretty standard but also very good. The wine list was extensive and the prices not too bad for a high end restaurant. I thought overall the prices were a bit high, but they had plenty of demand for their seats so why not? COVID has made everything more expensive so to stay in business they have to adjust.
