About Acanto

Across from Millennium Park and along Chicago’s Cultural Mile, Acanto Restaurant + Wine Bar is a favorite destination for those who appreciate approachable and authentic Italian food, an award-winning wine list featuring selections from each of Italy's twenty regions, and an inviting, conversation-friendly dining experience.

In 2017, Acanto received a Jury Prize and 3-Star rating in the World of Fine Wine "World's Best Wine List," and a 2-Glass "Best of Award of Excellence" rating in Wine Spectator.

The word Acanto is the Italian translation of Acanthus, the flowery leaf featured prominently in Roman architecture. Famed architect Louis Sullivan used Acanthus in his distinctive terra cotta ornamentation found on the facade of the historically-landmarked building that houses Acanto.

Excellent pre-theatre location. Salads were fresh and delicious. Pizzas are yummy and filling. Exception offering of high end wine. Service was great as is location across from Grant Park.

My husband and I really enjoyed Acanto! The atmosphere/vibe was really cool and relaxed, yet classy. You could dress up or down and still fit in. The service was phenomenal. Water refills and wine refills from our purchased bottle never missed a beat. The only downside was the pasta special that came was a little colder than expected but the flavor and the homemade noodles were still amazing. Otherwise the apps and steak entree were perfect! Highly recommend!

Amazing! Everything was simply amazing: our wait staff, the wine, the food, and the dessert. If you can, get the Apple cider donut things. My boyfriend and I walked out talking about how good they were.

Another exceptionally good meal at Acanto. The wine list remains one of Chicago’s best and most thoughtful. Food was well prepared and on par with meals I’ve had at Michelin started restaurants in Europe. Spaghetti with lobster in a sauce American is decadent with perfectly cooked pasta and lobster. Leave room for desert. Service was spot on.

Appreciate sustainably caught fish special, it was very good. However, after paying $90 for a small portion entre, 2 glasses of wine and a single scoop of sorbet, I went home hungry and ate l.0

Acanto is our go to on Michigan Ave. food great. Don’t believe they read the reservation since they didn’t acknowledge the 60th bday we were celebrating which was disappointing. Other than that all great.

This marks our second visit to Acanto, which was even better than the first.
The Menu is terrific with lots of very unique Italian dishes and at least a third of the menu was accessible to my Vegetarian date, which is a RARE gem!
No complaints to be found about the service, portions, or anything. Wonderful flavors! A great place to try new things!
Thanks!

The waitstaff in general were very positive and attentive. Waitress was helpful and friendly - never rushing, even though they were very busy. Our teenage son had the pork chop, which was juicy and quite tasty. Every morsel gone. I had the chicken marsala - served with roasted root vegetables. Different than I expected, but delicious. Husband had striped sea bass - it looked fantastic. Tiramisu for son's dessert was beautifully done, as was the plate of assorted goodies my husband enjoyed. A very relaxing and delicious meal.

This was our second time at Acanto, both pre-theater. The service was spot on and the food was delicious. My husband had the frittata and I the bruschetta. Both were perfectly done with good, but not oversized portions. Atmosphere is lively but not loud enough that you can't have a conversation. Overall, I would recommend Acanto for lunch/brunch. Next time, we will try dinner.

Start off with HARD TO FORGET (buffalo trace, averna amaro, smoke) or a bold red. Enjoyed the truffle mozz on the bruschetta. Delicious homemade pasta and veal meatballs. Finished off with the budino and gingerbread gelato. Comforting Italian food right before an evening show; nice and quiet early dining crowd.

It was a great choice to make a Birthday reservation at Acanto. We were late for our reservation time since we drove from suburbs, but the host was so kind and despite the situation we felt welcome and service was really nice as well.

I have eaten at Acanto many time, and have always had a positive experience. This past time, a Friday, was a disaster. My vegan friend ordered a sampler of sides and the potatoes were utterly overlooked, the sautéed kale had a fishy taste, unbelievable! The chicken marsala that I had was tough and lackluster. Overall I would rate the food we tried Uninspired and poorly executed. I may wake up screaming over the fishy kale some night. I will consider giving them another chance, but for the moment, this place is off my list. It remains a charming room and the service was good, but somebody is definitely asleep in the kitchen.

We usually go to Acanto for Sunday brunch. This time, we met friends for dinner. The staff was very helpful with food and wine selections, and they were very attentive. The food, as always, was delicious. There is a lot of variation on the size of different dishes, so be sure to ask the waitstaff (esp. regarding the pasta dishes). For appetizers, the arancini are addictive. This might be the best selection of Italian wines in the city.

Loved Acanto! Billy Lawless (the dashing owner) even stopped by our table to chat and check on our enjoyment level: High! We started off with the cod croquets in a saffron aiole sauce...it was delicate and lovely, not fishy at all. And on a cold day, it was the perfect starter. Followed by the Kale & Chicken salad: the greens were fresh and crisp; the chicken was tender & juicy with a crispy exterior and the dressing gave it a nice flavor, not overdressed at all. The environment is warm and energetic; it feels like a place you could be 'regular' very easily. Next visit, I want to check out the intimate bar area...enjoy a glass of wine with some Bruschetta! Thanks.

Fantastic restaurant. Walked in and the owner met me and handed me a glass if sparkling wine, The wine list is heavy on Italians, which is out of my comfort zone, but the waiter was VERY knowledgeable. Homemade pasta was like Italy. loved it so much going back today for lunch with my husband.

Service and food were both top notch. Server offered 2 wine tastes when we were unsure of a selection. Arancini, capiletti, chicken marsala perfectly prepared and tasty.
Very near the theater district. Easy to get dinner in just over an hour.

If you're looking for a good quiet-ish lunch or dinner near the Art Institute of Chicago Acanto should be at the top of your list. Seating is a bit limited and a bit crowded. But the food and service will help you ignore it. Menus are partly seasonal but always delicious, with a slant toward comfort. And the prices won't mean that your kids can't get a higher education. Just give Acanto a try.
