A16 - San Francisco
The restaurant features wood oven-fired Neapolitan Pizza and other specialties of Campania such as Maccaronara with ragu napoletana and house-made ricotta salata. The wine bar serves 40 wines by the glass and half bottle carafe. The list is 60 percent Italian, mostly from the South, and the other 40 percent is New World, celebrating premiere Italian varietals grown in California along with many California wines.
We offer Three unique seating areas for reservations: the main dining room, our high top seating in the wine lounge, and the chef counter which oversees our open kitchen and our talented cooks.
Please be mindful of these seating options as you select them on Opentable.

We had a wonderful time. The food was delicious and it was a very busy happening spot.
Just overpriced is all. Good food for sure.
The food was ok but bland. The service was ok but slow. And if you book a table for three they stick you in a back corner table facing a wall that really only fits two people. Very bummed. I used to love this place but the last experience will prevent me from going back.
Great lunch, not crowded. Recommend for lunch on a Saturday.
This is the second time we had a Sunday lunch with our friends at A16. We won’t be coming back. The food was average, the service was not up to par (the waitress seemed very unhappy to be there), and the prices are too high for what you are getting.
Food was great. We sat at the chefs counter, very entertaining. Our neighbors were fun and contributed to a great dinning experience. Price is high for such a small portion of pasta.
Delicious food and great service
We had our friends coming from east coast and it was a great night
Festive and lively vibe and great menu with lots of vegetarian options!
Fantastic food and wine selection. A great night out for dinner!
Outstanding food and wine.
New Years Eve
We don’t want anyone but Natalia to serve us, she is that good!
A16 is a wonderful restaurant. The food, wine and service are outstanding. My husband and I always have a wonderful experience when we dine here.
A16 is a delightful place for a meal, and the service offered by Nataliia is truly exceptional. If I were to make one suggestion for improvement, it would be to broaden the number of entrée options -- there are actually very few available if the diner is not in the mood for pasta or pizza.
Christmas Eve dinner.
We ordered the burrata, a pizza and a pasta to share. Service was very average to begin with. The burrata was overpriced. The pizza was average.
When it came to the pasta, the pasta was half cooked and inedible. After showing this to our server, she brought back a second attempt. After we asked them to make sure to cook it more thoroughly this time, it was also inedible!
The server then tried to make it right. She said she’d get us the trout and that it would be on the house if we’d like that. We said ok. Thankfully the trout was well cooked.
Then came the kicker. When she brought our bill she said, we put the appetizer on the house for all the trouble. Well the appetizer was $16 less than the main fish she offered to us. I was surprised she went back on her word so I said, “I thought you were covering the trout?” At which point she made an awkward laugh and laughed it off!
She took our card and actually went ahead to charge us for the trout!
We left her a 10% tip since it was the lead up to the holidays. But what an affront. Not going back to this restaurant!
Great Food. Great Wines. Energetic and attentive service!
It was so loud we could not hear each other across the table. I usually order my husband a taste of wine. When the waiter brought it, my husband said that he wanted a beer. Couldn’t hear him. Food was good but salad barely had the special components to make the kale interesting. My fish was crispy skinned but a really small portion.
Nothing relaxing about the place for a Friday evening end of the week treat. Energetic to say the least.
Bartender is amazing.
Service was poor. Waiter couldn’t answer questions on ingredients in food. Forgot about one of our diners meals and we had to ask several times. Waiter forgot to bring check and we had to ask several times
Great food and good service!
I love Shelly’s restaurants because the good is always amazing and so are any wine recommendations. I was meeting an old friend and just wanted both those things and a comfortable spot to catch up. We were in an area where two tables added a chair. Usually this is fine but it’s a close space and already festive with the noise and both tables where three tops of men who could care less they were taking up large amounts of space. The staff had to go around and around to accommodate and it made the evening not the usual experience at this spot. Our waiter made great recommendations but was not a friendly addition. It felt like things were off aside from the food and wine. I am hopeful it was one time. I love all my experience at SPQR but due to the staff at A16 it’s a hit or miss.
Always great service and wonderful food.
Pastas were underseasoned. I’m told the trout was good. The apps were decent. Pizza was very good.
Between my fiance and I, we've probably eaten over 50 meals at A16 and their former sister restaurant SPQR over the years, not to mention the many work dinners and larger events we've hosted with them, but tonight almost certainly marked our last. Food and wine are consistently excellent, but issues with service take any joy out of dining here.
Tonight we ordered two dishes to share to start and a bottle of wine. After several minutes, the server returned to tell us they no longer had the bottle we ordered. When my fiance asked what other wine of the same varietal he recommended, he pointed to something completely different (varietal, flavor profile, etc.). We pointed that out to him and asked for a few minutes to select for ourselves, and as soon as he walked away from our table, he began to mock us in Italian to one of the other servers, not realizing we understand the language.
We bit our tongues and ordered another bottle from him. Several minutes after he left the table this time, our food arrived, still sans wine. Several more minutes passed, and another man arrived at the table with a bottle that was not what we'd ordered, which he was confused and surprised to hear. Thankfully, he turned out to be the manager; he took over our table, provided great service, and ultimately comped the wine (a third attempt that was close enough we said yes and turned out to be lovely), which was a very gracious gesture.
I love the food here. I love the wine list. But getting mocked by the staff for pointing out their own carelessness and complacency in hopes of getting just a little help (to spend more $ with them!) was the final straw. We'll miss the food, but the apathetic and disrespectful service is just untenable.
The food was fine and priced again. Service came by roughly every 45 minutes. Can't see myself going back in a hurry, unless I had hours to burn.
The ambiance was nice and had a great holiday feel. The wine was great too! The one thing that was disappointing and different than my other experiences was the pasta... Very al dente to the point of being quite chewy and basically no sauce at all ( on either kind we ordered ) which made the flavor bland. The pizza, on the other hand, was yum! If I go again, I will definitely only go for the apps and pizza!
Been going to A16 for years. Everyone at our table noticed a huge drop in food quality. Not sure why. Won’t be back.
Had a reservation for over a month and hostess tried to sit our party of 6 at a high top btw the bar and dining room. Food was not of the same caliber of previous experiences. Used to love this restaurant. Maybe they were having on off night. It happens.
Recommended by friends @ wine dinner. Excellent food & great service. Tables a bit small for 2 people- trying to fit everything on table. Overall terrific.
Wonderful wine list
Consistently good service
Food was very good; service was also very good considering how busy they were. It’s just too noisy. Everyone has to raise their voices to be heard so consequently you hear strangers a table or two away better than your own company across the table.
Nice time with friends
Our family has been going to A16 since it opened. Service was below standard. My husband asked for his meal in a take away box and they just never brought it back to the table. We remembered it on the way home. Overpriced for the portions and comparable costs at other restaurants at their level. Too many other great restaurants in the area, definitely not returning to A16.
This was very unpleasant. The noise level was actually painful. "Conversation" involved shouting, which is what everyone else was doing, making it deafening. The food was ok. Nothing stood out. The hostess was helpful, and the service was fair. For the type of food they serve (pizza and pasta) there are much better options in town. I will not be coming back.
É sempre una garanzia! Posto casual ma di grande standard. WineList incredibile!!!
Excellent first course of cauliflower. Wine carafe of a =n Italian Campania red was well chosen. Zucchini based white pizza a bit bland . Overall still serving good Italian good and excellent wines for many years. Bravo
Excellent mean and great wine. Loved it. Out waiter was fabulous. Knowledgeable and not overly pushy. Highly recommend.
This was absolutely the noisiest and most crowded restaurant I have ever been to. Tables are about 6 inches apart and the acoustics just reverberated every sound in the place and everybody was yelling. Although I could hear the conversations of the table to my left, and the conversations of the table on my right, I could not hear the person across the table from me because it was much further away than six inches. By the second course, I went hoarse from yelling.
About halfway into the meal the manager came over to talk to the people on my left and placed her body within that 6 inches. I literally had to lean to my right in order not to touch her. This lasted for almost 5 uncomfortable minutes.
We ordered three dishes, we liked one of them quite well. I wish we never went to this restaurant as there are so many other restaurants that you can actually go to and have a conversation with the person you come with rather than those you didn’t.
