A16 - San Francisco
The restaurant features wood oven-fired Neapolitan Pizza and other specialties of Campania such as Maccaronara with ragu napoletana and house-made ricotta salata. The wine bar serves 40 wines by the glass and half bottle carafe. The list is 60 percent Italian, mostly from the South, and the other 40 percent is New World, celebrating premiere Italian varietals grown in California along with many California wines.
We offer Three unique seating areas for reservations: the main dining room, our high top seating in the wine lounge, and the chef counter which oversees our open kitchen and our talented cooks.
Please be mindful of these seating options as you select them on Opentable.
Reliably fantastic. Great wine selection. This is the place that started the neapolitan pizza renaissance in SF, and still great on all fronts - pizza, pasta, secondi, dessert.
Lunch is light and appropriate... Good salads and pasta, besides pizza. Good wines , especially Italian ones.
Great for pizza, wine and ambiance. We sat in the back 'garden' to get away from the crowd -- for obvious reasons. It's best to sit in the main room or at the bar for livelier ambiance.
I’m a regular customer at A16, I live in the neighborhood and has been one of my favorite places to go on the weekends. On each occasion the service has not been the best but I kept giving another try because of their food and wine selection. Unfortunately this last weekend the service got even worse than before. Not only the server ignored my table (at the patio) but was very rude. One rude comment that the server said to me when I asked for olive oil, YOU NEED TO SPEAK UP. Nobody has ever been so rude in a restaurant like this, if he didn’t hear me there are a thousand ways to ask me to repeat my question. This was the last time I go there with friends and I will not recommend it to anybody. There are other options around the neighborhood
The service was outstanding but I urge A16 to develop a more comprehensive dinner menu. If the diner seeks more than pizza or a salad, there is little to choose from.
Used to love this place. However service recently has been rather uneven. Alas this last visit was the final straw. After being seated no one, except the water server came to the table for 10 minutes. The server finally passed by & said he would be back quickly to take our order. He didn't return. We finally got the eye of the check in lady who came over & took our order. A pizza, a salad & as we are not very familiar with the Italian region covered by the wine list & the list is extensive, we asked for recommendations for a light, fruity bottle of wine & gave a very reasonable price point. We then sat for 25 minutes more & no one came near the table, except the check in lady who came to apologize & tell us the wine would be with us shortly. It didn't appear. We walked out. We went to another great local restaurant, we were seated & had both food & drink within 15 minutes. So disappointed in A16.
Do not sit in the front part of the restaurant, especially in the tight space between the front bar and back area. Extremely loud because the ceiling is low and the walls and floors are all hard material. Tables are too small. Overall food was awesome but the noise level was so laud we couldn't hear each other and counted hear the waiter. It is also very dark so we needed our cell phone flashlights to read the menu and very long wine list.
We were out celebrating a birthday. We chose A16 for the ambiance, service, and delicious food we've known through the years. Sadly, this was not the experience we had.
It started well with a order of wine and drinks for the table, however when the wine got there it seemed we were served a full glass in one and a half class in another. We brushed this off as a miss step but continued on with ordering our meal. This was the last time we interacted with our waiter until the end of the night.
When the appetizers arrived the Burrata was tough and more resembled a child's string cheese than a soft buttery light flavor. Our pork chop was over done to the point we had to ask for a new knife to cut into it. My ragu was mealy and the zucca pizza seemed to lack flavor. The ray of light was the chicken which we decided to take the remainder home as leftovers. With a disappointed meal, we decided to continue to drink. This too became an issue where we had to order and reorder from three different people in hopes of getting beer and glass of wine. When the drinks did finally arrive, it was a different Hazy IPA than the one I had ordered. Needless to say we skipped dessert.
When our waiter reappeared she quickly placed the check on the table and walked away. As we were finishing our drinks, she came by again and picked up the check before we even had chance to place our card inside. Our left over chicken was never brought to our table and we ended up leaving without it we decided to go back and even the hostess was shock to hear it wasn't brought to our table before we left.
As you can see it wasn't the birthday celebration we were all hoping for. We have always loved A16.
The food and drinks were amazing. The burrata and pizza's were some of the best. The restaurant was packed, so the service was slightly slower but the waiter was very nice and helpful.
Server Cassandra gave excellent food reccs, i.e grilled calamari app and the totally unique pistacchio ricotta dessert. Always excellent wines reccs by Steven. Thank you!
The food was excellent. The service quite good. Unfortunately, conversation in the place was at high volume and my guest and I had difficulty hearing each other.
Delicious Italian small plates (except the polenta), good energy. Extensive wine list though didn’t find serving staff particularly engaging in discussing the wines or supporting selection, which I think led to a more mediocre experience.
Good yet unusual Italian wine list. Good standard Italian fare. A bit expensive for what it was. But still good.
A neighborhood favorite. One of my "go-to" spots given the consistency, ambience, friendliness and the ever evolving aspect of specials in combination with old favorites. Staff is very attentive and makes the whole experience worthwhile. Loved revisiting the history of the restaurant and the name. Loved the pork meatballs special along with the chicken and salmon entrees. Didn't even sample the pasta or pizza on this visit - which are normal "go-to" choices.
Overpriced, bland Italian food. $19 for three tiny meatballs. No bread on the table.
As usual, the pizza bianco was delicious! We shared a lamb sausage entree, which was good, not great. We also had a cavalo Nero side, which is kale in a tomato and onion sauce. That was really good, but didn’t really go with the radicchio that came with the sausage. Then we had the chocolate budino, very disappointing! It didn’t taste very chocolaty to me, and had the taste of Crisco. The service was excellent, but the dining room was too chilly because the cold air was coming in from the open door to the back patio.
the pizza was a bit over cooked. For people who have kids, A16 is really the last place you should visit, they are not friendly to kids at all and other customers keep staring at us when baby make any kind of noise. Waiter and waitress are acting obvious that they want us out of there asap.
The waiter was very knowledgeable about the wine list and that was much appreciated!
Everytime I visit A16 I'm always happy with the food and service. It's a solid San Francisco favorite.
Great place to share salad and a pizza!
Great service. Helpful/knowledgeable in picking a good value wine.
This place is easily my favorite italian spot in the city. Service, food, and atmosphere are always incredible. I live sitting at the bar to watch the dishes get prepared. Awesome date night spot.
An exceptional Italian wine selection
We sat at the bar and received professional yet personal attention from the bartender, Stephen. He was an able to recommend our food choices as well as fabulous wine pairings. Can’t wait to come back!
Unpleasant smell of cleaner when walking by bathrooms. Otherwise great!
Loved meeting Paola from The winery , great waiter, very noisy, good food ,a bit over priced but excellent
We loved our evening at A 16, we had not been for about 3 months after an unfortunate experience one evening there where the service was horrendous....but this evening it was right on and loved everything about it!!
Great food. Too crowded. Indifferent service.
Had a great time catching up with a friend from out of town
I’ve been to A16 many times and have absolutely loved it. it’s been about a year since my visit and honestly the food quality has gone down substantially. Our pasta was way undercooked, beyond al dente, and the pasta sauce was way too salty. We also ordered a charcuterie board, and the crackers were stale and flavorless. It just wasn’t the A16 food experience I’m use to and it was a pretty big let down.
I have a wonder time. The food was on point and the service very polite. I was interested in how the server didn’t seem know the menu as well as I would expect, but it was nothing to ruin the dinner or deter us from coming back.
The restaurant was a bit noisy, however that was simply because the other tables were enjoying themselves. I would recommend this place and be happy to go back. Next time I might sit at a high table or the bar to hear better.
I’ve enjoyed coming here for many years and always had a brilliant experience. But sadly on this occasion the service from our three servers was Beyond caring... lacking any interest towards us and also trying to charge us $25 more for our wine! It wasn’t even a busy evening.
Need to think twice about returning in the future.
We had the option to sit at the chef’s counter and took it since my husband is a personal party chef and loves to see the action up close. The service was friendly, timely and knowledgeable - the chefs working the wood fired ovens were so engaging and fun to chat to - but the food was definitely the star! I had the zucca pizza and my husband had the short ribs and they were both fantastic. The Italian wine list is stunning (and why Megan from Ryme Cellars recommended it to us). We loved it and will return for sure!
Never disappoints. The best chicken meatballs I have ever tasted. Thank you Shelly and staff.
We had a wonderful time. The food was delicious and it was a very busy happening spot.
Just overpriced is all. Good food for sure.
The food was ok but bland. The service was ok but slow. And if you book a table for three they stick you in a back corner table facing a wall that really only fits two people. Very bummed. I used to love this place but the last experience will prevent me from going back.
Great lunch, not crowded. Recommend for lunch on a Saturday.
