9 Bean Rows Restaurant is sadly closing but will be transitioning into Wren, under Chef Adam McMarlin, effective August 1st 2018!

Adam grew up in the Metro Detroit area taking his first job at 14 years old in an Italian butcher shop and grocery store where he worked throughout high school. While attending Western Michigan University he worked as a dishwasher and cook in a small cafe. Gradually he started working more and going to class less. He then bought a motorcycle and traveled throughout the southern United States, cooking along the way, until he arrived in San Diego, CA. Eventually he landed a job at a small restaurant owned and operated by a Frenchman from the Loire Valley. This is where Adam found a style of cooking that suited him. Simple and clean, rustic yet precise.

The food is outstanding, the service is wonderful and the restaurant is lovely! Anything on the menu is great, but the trout and chicken are superb. It's great if you just want a good meal but would also be perfect for a date or anniversary. Our favorite place in Leelanau!

Great food. Super small menu. Few tables, a reservation is wise.

New menu is limited but delicious. Wait staff was very helpful in making selections. Back patio seating is tight but enjoyable.

9 Bean Rows was on the way to becoming one of our favorite restaurants on the Leelanau Peninsula. According to local publications, the ownership was supposed to be undergoing a change when we were there last week, but there was a lot of uncertainty as to whether it was being run by the new owners or the previous ones. The food was comparable to in the past and generally quite good. However the wait staff was not very well trained. And when we requested outside dining we were placed at a table next to the air conditioning unit which was so loud it made conversation very difficult. All in all, a good meal, but given the cost of dining there, it failed to live up to expectations.

We have been going there for years. It changes Chefs a couple of years ago and re-opened and was just OK. Recently, there was a change in ownership/management and we tried it. The service was spotty and the staff seemed a bit confused. We got some bread/dinner rolls with water and the rolls were tough and cold. There was a tiny spot of butter with the 2 rolls. Onward to cocktails. My wifes wine was OK and my draft beer was tasty and cold. That's the end of the good news. We ordered Hanger steaks for $23.00 ea. They came extremely under cooked, very small portions and seared outside. There was a vegetable side on the plate. 3 tiny vegetables. Seriously. The place may be OK for a cocktail or a light snack, but we will never know because we will never return.

We made reservations for our vacation based off of recent reviews prior to the ownership change. Unfortunately the food was mediocre at best.My husband’s hanger steak was tough and inedible. My first entree of pan seared walleye was rubbery and tasteless. The server was gracious and replaced it with salmon which was much better. The roasted beet salad was very good. The sauce on the salmon was also delicious. However our meal was overall disappointing at 100 plus a tip for 120 total. For that, I expect excellent food. We will not be returning.

Nine Beans has changed hands more than a few times in the last two years. The last two chefs were disappointing . But Wren is a welcome change. The food was delicious and well prepared. We will be back!

After a week's worth of very average dinners in Leelanau County, we were so glad to have made the reservation in advance to check out 9 Bean Rows. Easily the best meal we had all week! They have a small menu with interesting combinations and lots of local, fresh ingredients. There is a great selection of local and other wines along with some creative cocktails, which were delicious! Spouse had the whitefish, MIL had the walleye and I had the arugula pesto pasta, plus the soup of the day - a potato/leek bisque-style soup. The soup was outstanding with deep, intense flavors and a perfect creamy texture. The fish dishes were both excellent and perfectly prepared. We had eaten other fish dinners every night but this fish was the freshest tasting and most perfectly done. The pasta dish was a tiny bit bland - I would have liked some more of the arugula pesto on it, but it was still quite good. There were two desserts to choose from, so we got both and shared them. Small portions of heaven!! The chocolate pots de creme was intensely flavored with high quality chocolate and caramel. The cream coconut cake was moist, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Can't say enough about this restaurant - don't miss it!

Just good fresh, artfully prepared food. New chef is better than any predecessor.
