701 is a real gem! It was quiet (maybe vacation time in DC so lots of folks are gone?), romantic (great pianist), the food was inventive and tasty. We will definitely return.
Always excellent service and wonderful food. Thank you 701.
Delicious food, friendly and prompt service. Great birthday treat.
The best service! Probably the best restaurant experience my husband and I have ever had. Will definitely be back!!!!
I took my boyfriend to 701 for his birthday. We loved it! The lobster bisque was flavorful and the lobster was tender. Our entrees were delicious. The peaches n' creme dessert was okay. The peaches were yummy but the vanilla custard was too firm.
Food was great, waiter not so much. Was not very attentive and felt like she over worked with two many tables. We tried to call her on serveral occasions with no response. When she did respond, her mind was elsewhere. Atmosphere, we great but too expensive to not have great service.
Found a steal of a wine. $110 for 2001 Grand Cru Burgundy.
Excellent food and drinks! The pea soup was great, the pork chop outstanding
Jazz music was delightful and gourmet food to boot!
Its food options weren't as great as I hoped and the service was alright. I needed it to be great because I had reserved it for a birthday occasion, but it did not reach my expectations. Its a bit too formal for a birthday celebration and the food, though healthy, is not as delicious.
A lovely evening in a lovely restaurant. We will return for our anniversary this month.
Our business dinner was very rudely interrupted by a very impatient waiter. He clearly wanted to leave for the night. Our reservation was at 7:00 and by 9:00 he brought our coats to the table and became very irritated when we were not quite finished with our business. It was very embarrassing! The food was cold, not worth the money! Many, many other amazing venues in the area. 701 will have a very hard time competing in this area with this kind of unprofessionalism!
A wonderful experience. The pre theater menu was perfect for us.
My wife and I have made 701 our weekly after-work dinner and drinks spot. It's located at the top of the Archives Metro along 7th and Penn, just north of the Mall and just south of Verizon/Chinatown. We have been continually amazed at how undertrafficked this restaurant is, especially since we pass by places that are jam-packed but offer significantly less value.
The menu is of the Goldilocks variety: Not too limited, not too expansive, and what they serve is always perfect. The prices are very reasonable, featuring a pre-fixe that is about the price of one entree at the ridiculously overpriced Fiola. They have a good happy hour that can be enjoyed in the outdoor seating area. The staff are attentive and pleasant, and we've never had a bad experience with seating or service.
A notable feature of 701 is that it is situated on the Navy Memorial, which is a fountain-centric, open plaza with interesting art and often loaded with passerby. The outdoor seating area, open from Spring until Autumn, provides some of the best people watching in DC, in my opinion.
The calming sound of the fountains, the constant flow interesting people to watch, along with the great food, staff and value, have made this our regular haunt.
Excellent! Delicious and beautifully presented. Pre-theatre menu is a great value. Excellent, attentive service. Parking $8 is the icing on the cake.
Remarably below average. One meal was cold, the other overcooked. The service was good but overall, no reason to return.
Wait staff and management graciously accommodating.
My wife, I and cousin had an excellent meal. Evrything went perfectly and we were very pleased. The duck and salmon and fava bean tortellini were delicious.
Fantastic service; well paced meal service and delicious food. Perfect choice for a special occasion!
As usual, a delicious lunch with attentive service in a venue quieter than most in the Penn Quarter neighborhood. Each of us added the chicken to our salads, and that chicken was beyond great.
Everything was great except the wonderful piano player was a touch too loud.
Food was good but pasta portions were very small and overpriced
701 never fails to please. The food is high quality and beautifully presented. The lobster bisque and the tuna tartare are highly recommended. Halibut and tile fish were excellent. The room is quiet and one can enjoy a conversation with friends without having to raise one's voice.
This is a restaurant that I go to often prior to attending theatre. It always has very good good and it is always served well. This time a good sized group of friends got together to celebrate the retirement of several of our coworkers. They handle us wonderfully from seating us in a logos location to allowing us to dine lowly enjoying our conversation. Would recommend this restaurant for any occasion
I have eaten at 701 many times for lunch and dinner over the years. I've always liked the ambience, the service, and the experience, but the menu was a bit dull so I dropped it from my list (there are so may great restaurants in Penn-Quarter now) . This visit, I found a whole new menu. It's great!! Lots of creative options for the non-meat eater, too. I had the spring pea soup and roasted Brussels sprouts. Both were amazingly good. I will definitely put this back on my list of "go to" business lunch places.
There is a certain elegance to this restaurant. It is a good destination for a special dinner.
It was my parents last night in town, so I picked this place based on the overwhelmingly high reviews. We were not disappointed! From appetizer to dessert there was no complaints. There was live music which created a wonderful, lively atmosphere. I had never been here before, however, this will NOT be my last time by any means. I’d love to go on a romantic date with my husband here, it’s the perfect spot.
Our service was not up to what we expect4ed - about 15 minutes (or more) to get first glass of wine and mine was pretty warm. The waiter did take it back and brought a cool one right away.
My husband attended a legal conference and we are planning
a move to The District, and choose dining at the 701 for its
proximity to the Newseum, and Zagat scores.
The decor is simple and elegant. The music is pleasing and relaxing.
On certain days, there is live music with a pianist. The servers are
elegant, well-informed, and helpful selecting dishes. The food is
creative, attractively-plated, and flavorful. Recommend the Halibut
and NY Strip. 701 does dining well.
There was one discordant note. For my husband and I dining out is
a mini vacation in our busy lives. The dining experience is important
for us. We were surprised that we had the experience of being rushed.
We had a reservation, arrived early, were seated early, and left in one
and one-half hour. Despite this one issue, we will return to give it a
second chance because of the many fine qualities.
NOTE: Impressive Customer Service. Management called and apologized
for the experience of feeling rushed. It was apparent that they cared, and
it mattered. To their credit, they acknowledged observing the staff clearing
the table before we departed, and immediately provided
coaching. I am impressed with the followup, and the genuine concern.
Look forward to returning to this restaurant.
If your old and like a very quiet dinner and are not in a hurry this is your place. It was fine but we’re from Pittsburgh and think we have many finer places. This might be a good place for before theater.
Normally we like 701 very much. The food is good, service is fine and the ambiance is elegant, but the main reason that we choose it is that is quiet. When we were there on Tuesday there was a large group having an event, and their noise level was unpleasant.
Another fabulous meal at 701! Pre-theater menu was delicious and, at $35 for three courses, a good value. I will be back!
701 Restaurant promised an excellent venue for lunch and dinner. It has a creative and varied menu and the meals are superbly prepared. The decor is sophisticated and the ambiance is conducive to good and easy conversation.
From the reservation re-confirmation call through arrival greetings, service, food & ambiance - everything was perfect for us! Seating is plush and comfortable, noise levels allow for easy conversation, the jazz duo on weekends elevates the vibe. The grilled octopus, duck and strip steak were excellent, perfectly prepared and beautiful on the plate. Cocktails were standouts, well balanced and attractively presented. 701 has offered a first class experience for many years and deserves to be top of mind for people looking for excellence. A wonderful happy hour spot as well. Well worth a visit, or a re-visit!
This was a very nice, quiet restaurant. The service was very good. The ambience was great. My husband had a pork or lamb dish and I had the pasta special. Both were very good. They asked if you wanted bread for the table, well, of course! So make sure you get the bread. It is a more romantic atmosphere . We enjoyed it.
New chef, new menu, better restaurant. 701 used to be our go to restaurant, but then it slacked off and we stopped going. Now we've added it again to our list of favorites.
A friend of mine and I were enjoying a day downtown with stops at the Renwick in the morning and the US Botanic Garden in the afternoon, so this was a perfect location with the added bonus of being able to eat outside next to the Navy Memorial Fountain on a beautiful sunny day. We had excellent Cobb salads with chicken. Great service too.
Had a wonderful experience.
Sometimes I like going to a place and just telling the server "Chef's pick for 4 courses, somm's pick for pairings with them." and it seemed to almost be beyond their comprehension.
This place, nope! Server ran right along with it without missing a beat, and I had a wonderful meal that even included perfectly cooked venison that was absolutely delicious. And each course was paired with a wonderful wine selection on the part of the somm.
Excellently done overall, and I'd be happy to come back.
Amazing food and service
