Went to 701 before the theater. We were a little early so the place was empty, even on a Saturday at 6:30pm. But the live pianist was very enjoyable and the food and service were absolutely great! The pre-theater menu is a good value!
Very nice staff and manager. Very accommodating.
The service was excellent and the bread was so delicious. I went for lunch and the tuna burger was very good. I didn’t think that the carrot cake for dessert was very good. I recommend skipping dessert.
Food portions were small. I realize that is the current trend, but these portions were really, really small.
This restuarant is located at 701 Pennsylvania Avenue NW DC. Beautiful decor. Live Jazz on Fri- Sat after 530p to 9pm and it's open until midnight.
Paper menus ( which I hate ) but cocktails in a leather book (go figure). So we were Seated in a room with a lot of windows in the corner of the restaurant. There were a lot of tables available because it was early but the host chose to seat us in this secluded part of the restaurant. We were the only ones ( Brown) in this little area (displeased). Very scarce on the brown people with the exception of Charles and myself. I could've asked to be moved to a different part of the restaurant but I let it ride.
Appetizers came out with the heads on the prawns but beautifully plated but I can't stand the heads on. These prawns were missing that extra flavor that they should've had. This place allegedly has a Michelin Star so was very disappointed in the lack of flavor. Entrees ordered were, Alaskan Halibut with risotto and grilled Swordfish with quinoa. Now these dishes were everything. They were beautifully prepared/plated and the taste was pure perfection. We enjoyed these so much.
Service could've been better and the server should've been more attentive which he wasn't.
Overall I give them a 7 based off the beautiful decor that we barely could take in after being taken to the seclusion room, the live Jazz that we barely heard again because of where we seated and the entrees since they were delicious and appealing appearance.
701 Pennsylvania Ave Restaurant & Bar
tips: You might want to do a better job with your Hosts/Hostesses when seating customers and making them feel they were being isolated. No one wants to be seated where they cannot hear the music when there are plenty of available tables. You also need to ensure your servers are more attentive.
Would we return?? No thanks
Great restaurant that we have come back to over and over again for special evening dinners. We have never been disappointed with our meal, the service or the ambiance.
This was a great deal for DC restaurant week. Spacious dining room, interesting tasty food, and complementary Prosecco for our anniversary.
We came for restaurant week and the food was great. We had the Bronzino and duck for dinner, both good choices. If you are craving carbs you need to order additional sides. Desserts are light and wonderful. The place gets a bit noisy from the bar area so not the place if you would like a tranquil conversation. Service was good but felt rushed at times.
The service was good. The lady who served us is very experienced and obviously know all the details of the menu. The other staff are professional too.
The food was great, especially for the restaurant week. The chilled sweet corn soup was delicious.
We didn’t try the wine.
There were a group of people standing at the entrance. The noise was a bit loud. Other than that, everything was satisfactory.
Exceptional restaurant week menu, and impeccable service. We will be back !
Great food service was top notch and the venue was lovely! Yes
We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at 701. My black olive ravioli was so yummy! My husband said his salmon was one of his best ever—moist and delicious. 701 is a nice place and we will return.
I have visited 701 several times over the past year. Went here for the Summer Restaurant week lunch with friends from work and everyone was very impressed with the service, quality and presentation of the meal. I highly recommend dining here. Probably one of my favorite dining spots in Penn Quarter.
We have been here many times over several years and have only been disappointed once. From inexpensive bar lunches to elaborate multi- course meals, both service and quality of food have always been excellent. Fish is always fresh and perfectly cooked, as is beef. This time we went during August Restaurant Week and enjoyed a delicious meal and bottle of wine at bargain prices, it’s an increasingly rare restaurant where conversation is easy in a comfortable and gracious setting. Bonus this time was a wonderful outdoor concert by the Navy band and Sea Chanter singers just outside the door. Highly recommend!
Great menu for restaurant week. Service was excellent!
Our waitress, Petra, was a peach.
Another good restaurant week visit. I loved my entree. My companion felt she'd had better. But we both enjoyed our visit and will return
Our table was in a quiet corner, which we enjoyed, but it was sometimes hard to get our water's attention.
Four of us came for Restaurant Week lunch. Two had chicken, one had hangar steak and one had salmon. For starters, 3 had gazpacho and one had the salad. For dessert, 3 had carrot cake and one had sorbet. The food was very, very good. The service was very attentive. It was well worth the price for lunch. We look forward to returning here in the future.
I thought that the menu for this year's Restaurant Week was outstanding. It was one of the best menus during the past few years.
Haven’t been able to visit in a while, but welcomed back like an old friend. Seasonal offerings were very good. Peach gazpacho was a refreshing summer starter. Hangar steak perfectly preparpared with delicious sides. Service from Petra was spot on with great attention to detail and mastery of the menu and preparation of dishes. Always a pleasure to lunch here.
Quiet elegance. Fabulous food. Profession waiters. Soft comfortable chairs. Pleasant and relaxing experience. Zen-like ambiance. Totally upscale and classy restaurant. Welcome relief from loud places with wooden chairs, so-so food, and waiters who greet diners as, "hi guys." Restaurant 701 is a gem. And conveniently located at the top of Archives metro escalator in Penn Quarter.
Excellent food, service and ambiance! The location is great as it is close to the Capital, museums and key monuments. We would have dined there again if we would have had more time in the city.
701 has some of the best ambiance in Penn Quarter. All of the food that I had was delicious and our server (I wish I could remember her name) was lively and great at recommending items from the menu.
This was an awesome place to eat. Staff was friendly and the food was to die for. We will definitely be back.
Excellent seasonal fruits and vegetables incorporated into creative courses. Peach gazpacho and tuna tartar were excellent as we're the subsequent items.
Had an excellent evening. Food was great. A lovely evening. Would come back again.
We were a group of 8 people. 701 Restaurant is perfect for groups of any size because you can always know that conversation is possible. Tho the restaurant may be busy tables are well-spaced making conversation easy.
701 is a real gem! It was quiet (maybe vacation time in DC so lots of folks are gone?), romantic (great pianist), the food was inventive and tasty. We will definitely return.
Always excellent service and wonderful food. Thank you 701.
Delicious food, friendly and prompt service. Great birthday treat.
The best service! Probably the best restaurant experience my husband and I have ever had. Will definitely be back!!!!
I took my boyfriend to 701 for his birthday. We loved it! The lobster bisque was flavorful and the lobster was tender. Our entrees were delicious. The peaches n' creme dessert was okay. The peaches were yummy but the vanilla custard was too firm.
Food was great, waiter not so much. Was not very attentive and felt like she over worked with two many tables. We tried to call her on serveral occasions with no response. When she did respond, her mind was elsewhere. Atmosphere, we great but too expensive to not have great service.
Found a steal of a wine. $110 for 2001 Grand Cru Burgundy.
Excellent food and drinks! The pea soup was great, the pork chop outstanding
Jazz music was delightful and gourmet food to boot!
Its food options weren't as great as I hoped and the service was alright. I needed it to be great because I had reserved it for a birthday occasion, but it did not reach my expectations. Its a bit too formal for a birthday celebration and the food, though healthy, is not as delicious.
A lovely evening in a lovely restaurant. We will return for our anniversary this month.
Our business dinner was very rudely interrupted by a very impatient waiter. He clearly wanted to leave for the night. Our reservation was at 7:00 and by 9:00 he brought our coats to the table and became very irritated when we were not quite finished with our business. It was very embarrassing! The food was cold, not worth the money! Many, many other amazing venues in the area. 701 will have a very hard time competing in this area with this kind of unprofessionalism!
A wonderful experience. The pre theater menu was perfect for us.
My wife and I have made 701 our weekly after-work dinner and drinks spot. It's located at the top of the Archives Metro along 7th and Penn, just north of the Mall and just south of Verizon/Chinatown. We have been continually amazed at how undertrafficked this restaurant is, especially since we pass by places that are jam-packed but offer significantly less value.
The menu is of the Goldilocks variety: Not too limited, not too expansive, and what they serve is always perfect. The prices are very reasonable, featuring a pre-fixe that is about the price of one entree at the ridiculously overpriced Fiola. They have a good happy hour that can be enjoyed in the outdoor seating area. The staff are attentive and pleasant, and we've never had a bad experience with seating or service.
A notable feature of 701 is that it is situated on the Navy Memorial, which is a fountain-centric, open plaza with interesting art and often loaded with passerby. The outdoor seating area, open from Spring until Autumn, provides some of the best people watching in DC, in my opinion.
The calming sound of the fountains, the constant flow interesting people to watch, along with the great food, staff and value, have made this our regular haunt.
