Both private & semi-private spaces are available for groups of any size. We have one small private dining room that holds 12 people comfortably. Our Corner View room can seat 22 people. We have semi-private larger areas that are defined by large columns and architectural features.View Private Dining Details
It was my parents last night in town, so I picked this place based on the overwhelmingly high reviews. We were not disappointed! From appetizer to dessert there was no complaints. There was live music which created a wonderful, lively atmosphere. I had never been here before, however, this will NOT be my last time by any means. I’d love to go on a romantic date with my husband here, it’s the perfect spot.
Our service was not up to what we expect4ed - about 15 minutes (or more) to get first glass of wine and mine was pretty warm. The waiter did take it back and brought a cool one right away.
My husband attended a legal conference and we are planning
a move to The District, and choose dining at the 701 for its
proximity to the Newseum, and Zagat scores.
The decor is simple and elegant. The music is pleasing and relaxing.
On certain days, there is live music with a pianist. The servers are
elegant, well-informed, and helpful is selecting dishes. The food is
creative, attractively-plated, and flavorful. Recommend the Halibut
and NY Strip. 701 does dining well.
There was one discordant note. For my husband and I dining out is
a mini vacation in our busy lives. The dining experience is important
for us. We were surprised that we had the experience of being rushed.
We had a reservation, arrived early, were seated early, and left in one
and one-half hour. We felt rushed after the first course, but blamed
ourselves for ordering it belatedly. But, the same thing happened with
the entree. My husband had not finished his NY Strip, merely paused,
when an employee was at the table reaching for the plate. In fairness
to the employee, he did ask if my husband was done, but that was only
after reaching for the plate. We were rising from the table, gathering our
belongings, when the staff was clearing the table. For this elegant restaurant,
that does much well, the rushing came across as tacky. Despite this one
disappointing aspect, we will return to give it a second chance because
of the many fine qualities.
If your old and like a very quiet dinner and are not in a hurry this is your place. It was fine but we’re from Pittsburgh and think we have many finer places. This might be a good place for before theater.
Normally we like 701 very much. The food is good, service is fine and the ambiance is elegant, but the main reason that we choose it is that is quiet. When we were there on Tuesday there was a large group having an event, and their noise level was unpleasant.
Another fabulous meal at 701! Pre-theater menu was delicious and, at $35 for three courses, a good value. I will be back!
701 Restaurant promised an excellent venue for lunch and dinner. It has a creative and varied menu and the meals are superbly prepared. The decor is sophisticated and the ambiance is conducive to good and easy conversation.
From the reservation re-confirmation call through arrival greetings, service, food & ambiance - everything was perfect for us! Seating is plush and comfortable, noise levels allow for easy conversation, the jazz duo on weekends elevates the vibe. The grilled octopus, duck and strip steak were excellent, perfectly prepared and beautiful on the plate. Cocktails were standouts, well balanced and attractively presented. 701 has offered a first class experience for many years and deserves to be top of mind for people looking for excellence. A wonderful happy hour spot as well. Well worth a visit, or a re-visit!
This was a very nice, quiet restaurant. The service was very good. The ambience was great. My husband had a pork or lamb dish and I had the pasta special. Both were very good. They asked if you wanted bread for the table, well, of course! So make sure you get the bread. It is a more romantic atmosphere . We enjoyed it.
New chef, new menu, better restaurant. 701 used to be our go to restaurant, but then it slacked off and we stopped going. Now we've added it again to our list of favorites.
A friend of mine and I were enjoying a day downtown with stops at the Renwick in the morning and the US Botanic Garden in the afternoon, so this was a perfect location with the added bonus of being able to eat outside next to the Navy Memorial Fountain on a beautiful sunny day. We had excellent Cobb salads with chicken. Great service too.
Had a wonderful experience.
Sometimes I like going to a place and just telling the server "Chef's pick for 4 courses, somm's pick for pairings with them." and it seemed to almost be beyond their comprehension.
This place, nope! Server ran right along with it without missing a beat, and I had a wonderful meal that even included perfectly cooked venison that was absolutely delicious. And each course was paired with a wonderful wine selection on the part of the somm.
Excellently done overall, and I'd be happy to come back.
Amazing food and service
Although not as quiet as it used to be, it is still our go to place for a civilized, adult meal. They are also very professional and courteous.
Food was good but not particularly innovative or exciting. Service was not good - servers was both impolite and unattentive, a bad combo. Would give it another shot but not for a while.
One of my three favorite restaurants around Penn Quarter (along with Rasika and Jaleo). We've been coming here once or twice a year for many years; the quality has been consistently excellent.
One of our party was in a wheel chair, but that proved to be no problem at all. Everything on the same level and tables widely spaced. The ambience is quiet, elegant. The food is excellent. Not overly elaborate but inventive and delicious. Plus the servings are just right. Waiter gave us good recommendations. The wine list is attractive. Our last visit here was just as good as the first ten years ago.
A group of us have been going to 701 twice a year for lunch for several years. It is centrally located with easy metro access, comfortable, relatively quiet, the service is good, and the food is good quality. We will be back in the fall.
We were able to hear each other speak which is rare in DC. The background music was relaxing. The food was good and the service was very good.
Great location, practically on top of the Archived/Navy Memorial Metro stop.
as always, lovely service, soft music and delicious food
A consistently great restaurant. The food and service always are top quality. We are pleased to find venison regularly on the menu. It is one of our favorite dishes. A good selection of wines for all cuisines.
Our waiter accommodated our needs very well and got us out in plenty of time for the theater. The food was very good and the drinks were good.
701 has always been the step-child of Ashok Bajaj's restaurants IMHO, but I've returned to it over the years as it is convenient to the theater, usually has reservations available, is visually serene (nice after a hectic day), and has valet parking . . . all desirable qualities. The downside has always been the noise level when there is onsite jazz and the food. While live music is lovely, it makes conversations even when there are only two people hard. In our case, we could only talk in pairs as talking as a group of four was impossible. And the food, which has been solidly okay (rarely stellar, but still enjoyable) in the past, fell far short this time. Flavors were lagging, pasta was too al dente, etc.
There are so many other fabulous dining options in the area, the pros of 701 don't outweigh the cons.
Excellent food and a quiet, low key space for conversation. 701 is the perfect place for foodies who want to enjoy a relaxed ambiance.
This was a great option between museums closing at 5 and hopping on a 7 pm bus tour. Service very high, food and cocktails delicious. Definitely on the high end side, as even my light-eating teens cleaned their plates
Good food well prepared and presented. Service very attentive and personable without being intrusive. Friday and Saturday live jazz is excellent and refreshing.
Ivan was an exceptional waiter. The meal was delicious. This is a gem close to the Washington Mall at the Archives Metro stop.
Wonderful food and outstanding service; especially nice that one can have fine dining and still be able to hear a conversation!
701 exceeded all my expectations, from the table service, to the food quality, to the reasonably priced cocktails. Definitely worthy of repeat visits.
This is a great restaurant. They are very attentive and they have some excellent dishes. They also have live piano music Thursday, Friday, Saturday evenings. Really classy place!
Service exactly as we like it--attentive, friendly, but not "Hi, My name is ... and I'll be...." All the food tasted delicious, was attractively plated, and had interesting touches.
The server did not check on us throughout the entire meal. In fact, he wouldn’t make eye contact. There were 2 managers on the floor and did not come check on us. When we finally would flag down one of the servers, they didn’t speak English... so asking for a Coke and then for ginger was a chore. Food was decent, but will not return due to poor service.
This was a great find. We'd recommend it to all. Beautiful restaurant, great food and service. And the piano bar added a perfect touch to the evening. A very nice price / value ratio. Not cheap but well worth it.
From start to finish, we were pleased with the knowledgeable service. Our waitress is a sommelier of a certain level who listened so she could advice us about wine pairings without condescension. While the menu is not extensive, there is variety. Preparation allowed ingredients to shine - from the green salad, tuna tartare, to papardelle and venison, to spiced chocolate tart and cheese plate. They offer a reasonably priced, 3-course pre-theatre meal. There’s live music from Thursday through the weekend!
We were more than pleased with our after theatre dinner at 701. Beautiful restaurant in a great location with valet parking. Service was exceptional, from entering to leave taking. Everyone was pleased with their choices for cocktails and dinner. Welcoming ambiance, animated but without the noise found in most DC restaurants. Loved it and will return.
701 is our go-to restaurant in downtown DC when we want a tranquil meal with a low noise level that fosters easy conversation. The food is meticulously prepared and served, and the dishes usually include creative touches that enhance diners' enjoyment. The pre-theater menu is a great deal, but the regular menu also offers good value. The wine list is solid, and the bar delivers well-made cocktails. Desserts are interesting, too, so save room for a final course.
Valet car parking is available in the evenings, and a small jazz combo (usually a duo) adds sophistication and zest to the evening while still allowing diners to converse. This professionally-managed establishment is reminiscent of some of the best-run, classic New York restaurants. We plan on returning often.
Excellent food, great to have menu with not any choices), food perfectly seasoned, gracious service, very helpful sommelier made perfect choices for our meal, quiet atmosphere a BIG plus.
Take note: Valet parking is on 7th at the corner. Courteous and helpful valet - went above and beyond.
701 is known to locals as one of the premier restaurants in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area. The food and service are consistently first rate. The seating arrangement and acoustics are the best that can be found, allowing for easy conversation. The friendly greeting at the entrance sets the pace for a relaxed evening of excellent unhurried service. The valet parking is reasonably priced and extremely efficient.
Beet salad and chicken main were excellent. Staff quite helpful.
