701 Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
We go to 701 every time we visit Washington and have always liked it. This weekend was different: the food was disappointing. The server didn't even ask how I wanted the duck Brest cooked which should have been a clue. It was overdone. My wife had salmon which she said was fair. We had brought friends from Philadelphia to 701 after telling them how good the restaurant was, and they too were disappointed. That said, the service was attentive, welcoming and friendly.
We should have known that a relatively empty restaurant on Saturday night was a sign. There are too many excellent restaurants in the city for us to return to 701.
701 was a nice place for a business gathering. Our table for 8 was located so that conversation was easy to have. The waitress was friendly. The meals were well plated, but no one came away advocating for a return dinner. I had the rockfish which was a nice size and was fine. Gnocchi was underwhelming. Others had steak. It is conveniently located off the mall area near the archives. Live piano was nice. Prices were a little high.
Everyone, from the staff at the host stand, our server, the sommelier and the bartender, Brian, was absolutely wonderful. Very pleasant, helpful, and attentive without being intrusive. We had planned on NYE dinner with another couple followed by a black tie party and when the other couple cancelled due to illness we debated just doing our party but are so glad we still went to dinner here, and will definitely be back again. Great music, as well!
Unfortunately I was a bit disappointed. The food was good but nothing really special. The service left something to be desired. The waiter was attentive but really seemed distracted or uninterested. To me that makes a big difference in the total experience. The restaurant is very pretty and allows for lovely views but the evening was just OK. Had been looking forward to this dinner but now, not in a hurry to go back.
Booked 701 for Christmas Eve especially for family and friends. Unfortunately we felt very hurried to to give up our table as the server appeared to want to depart for the evening... But that was not the worst of the experience, was overcharged for the meal and then the manager? And or hourly shift supervisor went to void the charge and recharged me, he ended up charging us twice. 48 hours later after noticing it was double charged we called the restaurant to have it remedied as it's a simple fix in 2017, the assistant manager told us, he didn't have access, didn't have the skills, didn't have the accessibility to fix the overcharge, and we would have to wait 5 more days for someone in position of authority and or responsibilities to be able to fix being overcharged. We would have gladly accepted the fact that the restaurant was dated and the service was poor to Fair, but in this day and age a restaurant that sells itself for being upscale does not have anybody on staff to fix a simple issue as an overcharge??? It appears and felt as if it were an establishment that rated itself much higher then reality dictated.
The food, atmosphere, and value were very good, however our server whose name escapes me — was a dud. Other servers made up for his lacking social skills. This is not our first business or social get together at 701 and we will return (but certainly avoid the one lackluster wait help!)
Service slow and inattentive. Left with dessert menu for 30 minutes before checking back in. Ordered cheese plate and it took another 20 minutes. Food was over priced. Tortellini sauce tasted as if out of tin can. Friends steak was requested medium rare and was very clearly medium. Wife ordered scallop appetizer in an entry portion. Consisted of theee scallops total for $36. Grossly overpriced, poor food, poor service. Will not be returning.
Food was good, but overpriced. The service was excellent, almost too much attention. The restaurant was chosen because of its recent review as being a quiet place to converse, as the dinner was a business meeting. However, disappointedly, the restaurant was very loud. I would not return to this restaurant as there are also many other excellent options in DC, and this was not a standout for me.
We enjoyed the quality and presentation of the courses on the pre-theatre fixed menu very much. There were a couple small glitches in service but we were greeted warmly, wished a happy anniversary, and quickly seated. The complimentary glass of champagne afterwards was much appreciated. It's so close to Woolly Mammoth Theatre that we'll be making it a regular dining experience for future shows.
My wife and I enjoyed it as a pre-theatre meal. It was particularly enjoyable that though the restaurant was nearly full, we could have a reasonable conversation even though I have some problems with hearing when there is background noise.
Because of time we stuck with the pre-theatre meal but the regular options on the menu were tempting, particularly as we enjoyed our 3-course pre-set meal.
Took the family for Thanksgiving dinner here. Meal was great and the live background music set the stage for a great dining experience. However, with tip we were over $325.00 once the tip was added. That’s with two kids and two adults. No complaints other than the value.
701 Restaurant is truly a gem. I had an important business meeting and this was the perfect spot especially with the ambiance and the live music. I have also taken my wife there for Valentine's Day and other special events. We do not go more often simply because we live far away from the location.
We came here for lunch and were very disappointed. The entree salads were quite small, they weren't plated nicely (greens piled on one side of the plate, meat/fish on the other side without any decoration, sauces, spices or herbs), and not very delicious. They did not have any soy milk or other non-dairy milks for coffee. Have eaten here many times in the past and enjoyed it, but after this experience we won't be back.
Third time eating here. I want to like it better for all the other good qualities of service and ambience, but this time I had worst entree - an overdressed salad with rotisserie chicken on argula greens - so much oil, no flavor and the chicken seemed off to the taste.
On the plus side, an inventive goat cheese icecream was delightful, but rest of the fig dessert fell flat.
Had the cobb salad with shrimp on it and it was ok. The shrimp was bland and rubbery it didn't look like they deveined them. They also made them look funny probably for presentation purposes, but if anything they looked weird. We asked the server to bring us some more bread and she either forgot or just didn't do it. I've had more attentive servers here and she seemed more concerned with removing silverware or excess plates/glasses. I've only been here 3 other times and usually the food is great. I'd say that after this time, I won't be back. For the cost, the food should be fabulous even if it is just a salad.
We scheduled a last minute pre-theater dinner there before seeing Mean Girls and the restaurant easily accommodated us, while at least one of their competitors would not. Our group was more than happy to eat here—we all love it. Food was excellent and we appreciated that the seated tables were spread out so we all had space. Service was great, as usual—she had on-target suggestions and a great sense of humor. We also had some wonderful cocktails. That octopus appetizer is still amazing!
Our party increased from 6 to 8 at the last minute. The staff was welcoming and quickly moved us to a lovely, private table for 8. The food was outstanding. The waiter was very attentive and managed our complicated bill without complaint. We were all visiting DC for a meeting. I will certainly come back next time I am in town.
The jazz musician were great... they even took requests. The food was wonderful (though small portion for me!), but still satisfying. They autumn menu was more on the seafood side, nevertheless, masterfully done.
The restaurant, even with the live jazz, is great for good conversations.
The host and service were exceptional.
