5Church was amazing! While it is noisier than most restaurants in the Meeting / Market and East Bay area it’s for good reason. 5 Church is an open dining setting inside an old church in downtown Charleston. The large open space may echo sounds but also lends itself to an amazing canvas to some pretty interesting art. As a local fan can say that 5Church is a must visit if you find yourself in Charleston!
This building was a former church and the upon walking into this restaurant I was impressed with the vaulted ceilings, the stained glass windows, and the lighting fixtures that resembled angel wings. Our server greeted us with a smile and was enthusiastic to explain the history and the menu to us. He had an impressive understanding of the ingredients of daily special items. My husband ordered the scallops which had unusual accompaniments such as a pesto made with peas. He enjoyed his selection. For a change I ordered two appetizers instead of a main course. This was not as good as I had hoped and I wish I had tried something from the main dish selection which included pasta, salmon, scallops, pork chops and steak were the selections.
Lovely atmosphere, good food, but was surprised that with such a large bar area they were out of Tito's vodka and one of their draft craft beers.
I wish i knew our server's name because he was the best server I have ever had. Food was excellent and the environment was even better. Definitely make an effort to experience this historic, and energetic restaurant on your next trip to Charleston!
Excellent all around.
We were very disappointed in our Restaurant Week experience. The food did not seem fresh and dishes were heavy with odd textures not cooked properly. The manager apologized but nothing was deducted from the bill- two dinners for $50 each. All three dishes for both of us were really not good at all. The interior is interesting, making this a good place for a drink only.
We had brunch at 5 Church and lived it. Great place with an interesting and fun design. The service was top notch and the food was amazing! I’d definitely go back next time I’m in town.
The location and building was interesting. The bar team were friendly and very active and efficient. The front end hostess operations and management was extremely poor. My wife and I had a reservation for 9:30pm and we arrived and checked in at 8:35pm. We were told it would be nearly 9:30 before they could seat us. We went to the bar area and waited for a table or our reservation, whichever would come first. As we waited there were open tables that were not seated for significant periods of time. After about 35 minutes I went back to the hostess to get an estimate on a time to get a table.
As I came up to the hostess desk, There was a lady engaged with the hostess team, asking (angrily) why they were holding up seating people, because a large party had not arrived and missed their reservation time by over a half hour. She was stating that there are tables available, and why hold things up for people who have not arrived, negatively impacting those who are here on time? After she left, without a satisfactory explanation, I asked about my possible table time, and was told a bit after 9:30. I tried not to add to the issue that the hostess was dealing with, but I must say the prior customer was exactly correct.
After 9:30 comes and goes, my wife walked up again to ask about the expected time to be seated, as there were 4 tables open in sight from the bar where we waiting. My wife was told it will still be some time before we get a table even though there were open tables. When she came back to our bar seat, she approached by a lady who said she was a manager. My wife explained the events up to the current time. The manager was defensive and even confrontational with my wife. I have never seen a manager in any customer service environment become confrontational or as flippant as this person.
It is sad that we walked out with such a bad feeling about 5 Church, given the fact that food was very good, and the table service was good. No recommendations from me
Appetizers were incredible, but the $44 60-second NY Strip was just ok. I enjoyed the accouterments to the dish far more than the steak itself. The meat lacked flavor, needed more char. I was disappointed with the flatness of my entree after such a beautiful buildup of anticipation from the lovely meatballs and the charcuterie.
The staff is impeccable, food was fabulous and loved the atmosphere!!
An amazing experience. The food was outstanding. Service was even better. Words can’t describe the interior design. Ask your server about the background of it! Don’t miss this 5 star Charleston gem.
I had a reservation last Saturday. Everything was excellent but I was not happy with the interaction I had with the hostess manager.
I requested to be moved because my table was near the kitchen door and it was noisy when the door opened. She moved me reluctantly because I was firm on not remaining at table. She was annoyed but she moved us but told me she would need the table at 7 pm. Basically telling me and my out of town guests we had to be out of there.
We were at 6:55.
Loved the food! Had the best waiter , Ian.
My friends loved the ambiance and the beauty of the interior of the restaurant.
Went here for Restaurant Week where they served whole portions at the discounted price. Our service and food were top notch.
Beautiful set up. However, I found the restaurant to be too dark. I could barely see the menu or my food as the night went on.
Ok. Nice service. Good ambiance. Food was just OK.
Fabulous food service and atmosphere. What a great place to visit.
The food was great and the bartender Betsy was super nice.
I love bringing guests from out of town here - the food is delicious, drinks are great, and the entire restaurant is beautiful.
If you enjoy a private meal then this is not the place for you. Seating is too close to the next table. The service was great but the food was disappointing for a Charleston restaurant. I would recommend this as a place to go for a drink and appetizer.
The hostess was dismissive and did not check us in through Open Table. The food was mediocre and items on menu were unavailable like the wedge salad and daily soup. While the waitress was very nice, the service was not always prompt throughout our experience. The restaurant in a converted church was neat.
Food was excellent, waiter was top notch. My only complaint is that we specifically booked a party of two at the bar for a happy hour special (through Open Table), because the bar is so nice. But when we arrived we were told there was a private event that night in the bar, so we had to sit outside on the back patio. Totally different experience.
Just a suggestion: don’t sell the seats at the bar if they aren’t available. Kind of makes the customer feel they have been duped.
Heaters ran out of propane. Chicken very salty.
Great experience! Our server Anfernee was attentive and professional. Food was great.
BLUF: 10/10 would recommend, Shaved Brussel Sprout Salad was my favorite dish of the night
My best friend was visiting from out of town and wanted to go out for dinner, so we chose 5Church to kick off our Charleston Restaurant Week outings. The food was fantastic and a good price for a three course meal. The Garden of Eden, Shaved Brussels Sprout Salad, 60 South Salmon, and the Bruleed cheesecake did not disappoint. I would eat the Shaved Brussel Sprout Salad every day if I had the option, so good. The service was good overall and it wasn’t overly crowded. The ambience and vibes are great. 5Church is unique—cozy but upbeat. It’s like having dinner inside a work of art, combining two very different houses of philosophy where you can come together with friends to make memories over a meal and drinks. The noise is a little loud, but still easy enough to have a conversation and hear across the table if there is a group. This was my second time here and it was just as good as the first. 10/10 we will definitely be back.
Always the best! Great meal options and wonderful vibe. 5 stars
Food is fantastic. Not a bad thing on the menu. Steak cooked to perfection.
The atmosphere, food, and service make 5Church absolutely worth a visit. We visited for Restaurant Week, so we had 3 courses and a cocktail. Each course was delicious and we also got cocktails which are worth a try too.
We had an amazing experience at 5Church. The restaurant itself is beautiful. The ambiance is great for a date night, family in town, or a friend get together. The food was amazing. Everything we tried was delicious. We are definitely going to be back.
Food and service were very good. Noise level is high. A happening place near the market place.
Visited durning Charleston Restauarnt Weekend. Loved the place. THe shaved brussel sprou salad was amazing, the filet was erfectly cooked and the cronut bites were delicious.
Reservation was made for 8:15. We didn’t get sat at a table until 9:00. Were not kept updated on anything just kept being told it would be a couple more minutes. Food was great. But was disappointed with the wait.
Loved the restaurant and the service was wonderful. We found the food to be salty. Would try again
As per usual, an extraordinary meal with impeccable service.
Awesome ambiance, service and food!
Great food, excellent service. My only gripe is that my husband and I were seated snugly between two other couples. We literally heard every word of their conversations and had no privacy. Really on top of each other to the point of claustrophobia.
Loved it! Food was awesome, portions big and everything was well worth the cost. Service was great and it’s such a unique venue. Will definitely return in the future.
Loved the experience, atmosphere, and food! Every dish we tasted was perfect in description, presentation, and taste. We enjoyed the Tuna appetizer and the NY Strip and Scallops as entrees. The waitstaff was very knowledgable about the history and meaning behind the interesting decor and location of the restaurant. It was our anniversary and we were treated to complimentary champagne. Overall would 100% recommend!
Unique place, very good food and good service.
The food was fabulous and our server was very knowledgeable about all the dishes! Service was just very slow. While the appetizers were served pretty quickly, We waited over 45 minutes for our main course to come out, even though the restaurant was not crowded. Would definitely recommend the food but make sure to give yourself an ample amount of time.
