5A5 Steak Lounge Ratings and Reviews
Recently, we celebrated a birthday and the overall experience was fantastic. The chef offered a complimentary appetizer- crab over a cucumber slice that was delicious. We dined in prime rib (cooked to perfection), mashed potatoes, cauliflower and mushrooms- all were a culinary delight. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable about the wine list and suggested the Pinot Noir which complimented the meal. The birthday dessert was small bites was sufficient to whet our senses.
We have dined here before and the meat is beyond wonderful. Delicious, and cooked to perfection. The only thing we did not like was dessert. We ordered a dessert to share and
it looked like they threw some things on a plate. It was ill prepared and looked like a
5 year old made it. So stick with the food and forget the dessert!
If you like steak, this is NOT the restaurant to visit! 2 friends and I visited on Saturday night, and we were excited to try 5A5 given the reviews. Clearly, the owners have several family members reviewing this place, because no independent reviewer would give this a passing grade.
The meal started with slow service and a 30 minute wait for our reservation. But, that was forgivable as the bar has a nice atmosphere. Once we were seated, we started with the Shisito peppers (actually very good, highlight of the meal), and Wagyu sliders. The sliders were a foreshadowing of what was to come...the meal slid downhill from there! Despite being ordered medium rare, they were served almost raw. Nothing "special" about these, and tasted like any slider you would get off the "passed trays" at any mid-level wedding. They make a big deal out of their Wagyu here, and we all expected something more.
Salads were next, the baked salad with an egg. This dish was ok. Then the trouble really began. The 3 of us ordered the $80 Ribeye. I only mention the price because there is an expectation of a good piece of meat. Again, not only were all 3 of our dishes WAY undercooked, the meat was tough, filled with gristle, and we were forced to send all of them back. It was inedible. Honestly, we spent the night listing places we had better steak at, and it didn't take Morton's or Joe's to beat it. We're talking Applebee's, Chili's and business class on United were better. The sides we ordered, the spinach, mushrooms, and cauliflower were serviceable, but again, nothing special.
The manager Matthew was the one bright spot. He apologized profusely, and did what he could to salvage the experience. But, after being there for hours, we weren't about to wait for another hour for a new steak. He didn't seem at all surprised by how poor the food was. I'm guessing his main job is apologizing to customers for the food. We left still a bit hungry, and definitely disappointed.
This was out first time to this restaurant and it was fantastic. The food, service and ambiance are all in harmony. The waiter took the time to explain the entire menu and did not rush us in ordering right away. I would highly recommend this restaurant for an intimate night out or just to have dinner with friends. We plan to return!
Appealing ambiance with open arrangement of tables. I dislike dark restaurants and this was a refreshing change of indirect lighting which helped to elevate my mood. The wagyu beef was truly an item not to miss if your wallet (corporate or personal) can stand the assault!!!! Our waiter, Chris, had worked there five years was very good and it was enjoyable interacting with him during our meal. The appetizers we ate, recommended by Chris, were very good (lobster tempura and the shishito peppers). Our t- bone steaks were very good and cooked as requested.
Great find. Really good food and service. Ambiance was quiet and comfortable. It is not a loud restaurant. We did not get the complimentary sparkling wines as it was advertised on Open Table at the time of making the reservation. I was not going to ask for freebies but if you do advertise it the hostess or the server should be aware of any specials offered. The people seated around us did get it, so it might have been an oversight. I don’t personally think oversights are acceptable at a restaurant of this caliber, so no 5 stars because of it. I would come again.
We ordered 2 of the very, very pricey Wagyu steaks and never was presented the certificate to validate. Steak was good but not as good as what I had elsewhere... tougher. Not seeing the certificate and the overall toughness of the meat makes me suspect of what was served.
While we had a pleasant evening and the service was good, my wife and I just really felt that almost all of the food had some issues with flavors not working well together. Since it left a lot to be desired for the price, we felt it was an overpriced dinner and most likely will not go back. I had the lobster bisque, but it was not a great flavor and since the lobster meat was added to it in the center (it was nice presentation) it didn't seem to go well with the bisque for some reason or do anything for the flavor. My wife had the grilled romaine salad and we agreed it was interesting, and maybe the best of what was ordered -- which shouldn't be the case at a restaurant showcasing steak. My filet was cooked perfectly and was very tender; however, the demi glace and green garlic flavors conflicted and didn't make the overall taste something I would recommend to anyone or order again. She ordered the t-bone because the ingredients peaked her interest, but it was a very strong flavor warranting a few bites only. The truffle mac & cheese was ok, but not anything great or special.
We had a large party and we usually pay our own bills. We were told that they could only charge even number charges on four charge cards. My wife broke down each persons bill and what each owed as she has done for our family for the past 28 years. They have a app now so it's much easier to take a picture of bill and separate it. She puts amount on paper and the amount to be charged .to each card He charged the different amounts but I have never heard of this before. The person who delivered the bill to the table , sat the bill on table no communication no eye contact and left not sure what that was about. This was not the waiter or our server he was great. Overall good food great service but these other two incidents threw me for a loop.
Visiting San Francisco for Labor Day weekend and this was our last night here. We found 5A5 on open table and based off all the awesome reviews we decided to give it a try. So glad we did! First of all, the hostess was very sweet and professional. We arrived 30 minutes early and she told us she would have a table for us soon and we could go to the bar/lounge while we wait. The bartender, Michael, was outstanding. By far, the best service we've ever received. He was very knowledgeable and friendly. The restaurant was very clean and had a nice intimate setting. Perfect for date night! We started off with the tempura lobster and the shishito peppers. I ordered the filet mignon and my boyfriend ordered the tbone. Both were cooked to perfection and seasoned well. By far the best restaurant we visited in SF and one of the best I have ever dined at. Job well done. Highly recommend.
If you're a steak lover, then this is the ideal restaurant for you. We started off with the Lobster tempura and U10 scallops, then had the A5 Wagyu Ribeye that was amazing. Including the truffle mushroom butter that was on top of it.
If you can get pass the $$$ price per ounce, then I recommend this restaurant...
Overall the experience was good. My steak came out medium when I ordered medium rare and my colleague's steak came out medium rare when he ordered medium. I'm pretty sure the kitchen switched our orders and we ordered different cuts of meats so it wasn't something we could switch... for the costs, this mistake should not occur.
The service was great. Very friendly. The appetizers and sides were great too. Just wish my steak was cooked correctly as the seasoning was very good on mine.
We were celebrating a new job offer and tell you the truth they way we were welcomed to the lounge was exceptionally classy !The food was more than amazing; the presentation of the menu items was outstanding. The waitress was smiley and helpful she explained the types of meat and the wines and the champagne. We enjoyed Prime Ribs, truffle fries and asparagus, and cauliflower .. all was served hot and super tasty! Will definitely go back again !
