This little surprise in a strip mall on Mission Avenue in Oceanside is a destination venue, as it is tucked away and inauspicious. We were there on a quiet Sunday night and the three of us shared a very comfortable booth. The manager greeted us and was available all evening in this small restaurant. Service was prompt and out waitperson was delightful, informative, and gave an honest assessment of the various dishes. The menu, which can be perused online, is very interesting with a Chinese forward fusion vibe which presents unusual dishes with interesting ingredients and spices. We ordered the Robichon shrimp which is whole stuffed shrimp which are deep fried and very crispy and tast. The birds nest appetizer is very tasty and best eaten with your fingers. The dumplings in a butter suase was rich with wonderful chewy gyoza wrappers. We ordered the duck as it is always mentioned in reviews, and we were not disappointed. It comes with 5 separate dishes including breast, leg, vegetables with duck skin crackling, and duck fat sauce to dip. It was excellent and while the price was high, it was well worth it and plenty of food. The only disappointment was the black sesame boudin which was touted as butterscotch, but it had little if any butterscotch taste. The wine list is limited and wines by the glass were very expensive without many inexpensive options. The overall cost was reasonable, but we are older and eat much less than in the past. At the end of the day, this is a terrific restaurant that alresdy has an excellent reputation and it is already a tough reservation. I suggest getting there before it becomes too popular, crowded, and more costly.

I have never had my opinion of a place jump back and forth so much in one day. First- they called me hours before our dinner reservation to check in with me because of my Open Table reservation, since I said that I have pollen food allergy syndrome- so I have a mild allergic reaction to some ingredients. He took note of everything. I felt really excited for our meal. Our waitress was really nice and attentive. The wine we ordered was fabulous. They initially brought out an extra something from the kitchen that we didn’t order. I can’t tell you if it tasted good, because it was extremely hot and burned my mouth. My tongue still felt burnt hours later! The waitress came and checked in and I said it burned my mouth. She said she had let the GM know. We then ordered the birds nest appetizer and it was amazing- one of the most flavorful dishes I’ve ever had. Then we got the dumplings. There was a piece of mint on each dumpling and I had mentioned no mint on the phone (and it wasn’t listed on the menu). The waitress and another gentleman there apologized and said it was there for color and that it shouldn’t affect the flavor of the dish, and they were correct- no flavor of the mint. The dumplings were pretty good, though it was hard to compare anything to the birds nest! Then we ordered the duck prepared 5 ways. One preparation was a cold vegetable dish- and I took a big bite- it was filled with mint! We sent it back and they brought one without mint. At the end of the meal- no apology from the manager. No comp on like our dessert or anything. Just a check and that was it. I think if they work at it they'll be amazing. If you go, order the birds nest! And the sesame dessert. Enjoy the kind wait staff. But maybe don't go there soon if you have any allergies!

Service was outstanding. Made us all feel very welcome and they were concerned. The service staff did an outstanding job of explaining the menu and made meaningful recommendations. Food was fantastic although the portions were a little small but still satisfing.

Overpriced and disappointed with food after coming for first time with high expectations after recent recognition as a Michelin guide recommended restaurant. Tablecloths much appreciated but overall atmosphere uninviting. Beef cheek dish very salty. Tuna sushi portion tiny and very pricey. Duck dish good but for $77++ it should have been great. I hope they will adjust and succeed. I remember when Per Se got a terrible review in the NYT and Keller responded by saying, “You’re right. We need to make changes.” He’s still in business there.

The service was very good. The restaurant wasn't busy. The food was bland and unremarkable, and the atmosphere felt dated and uninviting. Overall, a disappointing experience.

A Place Full of Promise — With Room to Grow I really wanted to love this place. The concept is exciting, the staff is warm and genuinely lovely, and there’s clearly talent in the kitchen. You get the sense that everyone here wants to create something special—and they might still—but for now, the experience doesn’t quite live up to the expectations it sets. The menu is beautifully presented and clearly thoughtful, but it feels limited and a bit too restrained. The portions are very small—Addison small—but without the fireworks that make those portions feel like an event. Some dishes arrived only lukewarm, and a few flavor combinations felt slightly off, as if they were chasing a Michelin star more than chasing deliciousness. That said, there were glimpses of brilliance. The amuse-bouche (or “voucher,” as they cleverly call it) was one of my favorite bites of the night—playful, balanced, and full of promise. It made me think: This is what they could be doing across the board. There’s a deep well of inspiration to draw from in Chinese cuisine—flavors that are bold, unexpected, intoxicating. I’d love to see them lean harder into that. Barbara Tropp’s China Moon comes to mind—she took Chinese flavors and elevated them with originality, without losing soul. Right now, this place feels like it’s caught between reverence and reinvention and needs to pick a lane—and fully own it. San Diego needs a destination-level upscale Asian restaurant, and I want this to be it. The talent is there. The heart is there. I hope they take the leap from interesting to unforgettable.

Because of its great online reviews and eclectic menu, my wife thought 24 Suns was worth a visit despite its Oceanside location (33 miles from our home). While its location in an unimpressive strip mall way east of the 5-N freeway was expected, the minimalist interior was clean, not unattractive and quiet. The 3 appetizers we ordered from its eclectic, oriental-inspired menu -- the Crispy Birds Nest, Jaiozi Dumplings, and pork belly & shrimp skewers -- were all unique and, though a small, very tasty. Given their prices, and the fact that guests most commonly dine in even numbered groups, it seems it wouldn't cost the restaurant much to include 4 birds nests (instead of 3) and 6 dumplings (instead of 5) in an order of these appetizers. Though the fried local catch was well-liked by many, we found the outside of our fileted, whole sheepshead tasty but dry and the inside, though moist and flaky, rather tasteless. Our dessert, the black sesame budino was thick and rich but not sweet enough for our taste; it got better after we mixed some Equal into it. Though not rushed, our several courses were delivered in close succession, so that our meal took only a bit over an hour to complete, which is faster than we would have preferred. Finally, we thought the restaurant's wine list, which consisted primarily of imports, was extremely expensive and included no moderately-priced domestic wines that we could see. The management may wish to reconsider this approach, as it deters patrons from ordering any wine with their meal. Though we really hoped to love 24 Suns, our experience last night coupled with the restaurant's distance from our house make it unlikely that we will return.
