I booked a reservation for Mother’s Day through OpenTable several days in advance for 3:15 PM, just 15 minutes after they opened. OpenTable confirmed: Three people, main dining room. When we arrived, I dropped my wife and son off and parked the car. Walking inside, I was blown away by the beautiful, bright dining room. But when I checked in, the hostess led us downstairs to the speakeasy. It’s a stunning space, but not quite the vibe we were hoping for on Mother’s Day. I double-checked my reservation, and it was indeed for the main dining room. I went back upstairs to speak with the hostess, and the manager walked by to help. He mentioned OpenTable often has mix-ups like this, which puts them in a tough spot. OpenTable definitely dropped the ball on this one. I started to get frustrated—I had booked days in advance for a reason. But then it hit me—I didn’t want to be that guy. I told the manager not to worry, and we headed back downstairs, determined to enjoy the day. And I’m so glad we did! The servers were fantastic—knowledgeable and welcoming. The cocktails were spot-on, and the atmosphere downstairs grew on us quickly. Just before our appetizers arrived, Brittany, the co-owner, came to our table and told us she had managed to find us a spot upstairs if we wanted it. After a heartfelt chat, we made the move, and it completely elevated the experience. Now, the food…WOW. on point for everything we ordered. Both steaks and the lobster were hands down the most flavorful and tender we’ve ever had in Richmond. The sides—au gratin potatoes, creamy spinach, and beans with bacon—were all perfectly prepared. Despite OpenTable's mix-up, the team at 1870 went above and beyond to make our day special. Their professionalism, kindness, and attention to detail turned what could have been just a good day into an unforgettable Mother’s Day. If you haven’t been to 1870 yet, go. You won’t be disappointed. We will absolutely be back!

We've never been more disappointed in an upscale, 5 star restaurant in our lives. The lobster bisque, one of our favorite starters, was fishy, overly greasy and completely inedible. The scallops starter was lacking in flavor, except a very odd, strong hint of orange that did not make sense. Filet mignon was over cooked, roasted carrots (which again are always a favorite) were awful. The salmon was drenched in grease, the only positive was the crispy skin. Basically, it was just truly awful from beginning to end. The wait staff were very nice and attentive. We did not complain, as its not normally something that happens to us. We just would never go back nor recommend 1870 to anyone. Very sad, because I'd been very much excited to try this place. Normally we'd go to Chez Max or Ruth's Chris etc, but the reviews were all stellar so we tried. A side note; supposedly this restaurant is from the chef staff at Midlothian Chefs Kitchen, which we have dined at and enjoyed. Not sure how they could miss the mark so completely here.

We had a wonderful evening celebrating our 60th wedding anniversary. The entire staff was extremely helpful as well as genuinely caring and supportive of our needs. The meal was outstanding and we received individual care and attention from our sweet waitress, Valeria. We were speechless when told that our meal had been gifted to us by a wonderful young couple who was also celebrating their anniversary-21st. They had visited us and chatted earlier but anonymously overwhelmed us with their generosity. We would love to be able to thank them personally but, if not, their kindness will be a beautiful memory of our 60th anniversary. Hugh and Peg

The meal and drinks were all very good. Our steak and salmon were perfectly prepared, well seasoned, and beautifully presented. We experienced two slight issues with our order, and without even asking or feeling like the service was subpar, the manager appeared and offered up a gift card. Our server must have self-reported to the manager, who took action. It was definitely unexpected and so appreciated. It felt that service was their number 1 priority...what a concept! I would highly recommend this restaurant.

We arrived to be told our table wasn’t ready yet they stress you only have two hours per sitting! We were moved to the speakeasy bar and waited over 80 minutes to receive cold veggies and over cooked steaks. They gave us credits etc but it ruined the evening Won’t be back anytime soon
