Sister and I celebrated my birthday last Thursday at La Verita. Our 2nd visit and equal to our 1st. Our charming server Adam and all others treated us and all guests like famiglia! The caesars arrived quickly, were spot on and went down easily. Now the food. App of fried calamari was very generous, perfectly cooked, crispy melt in your mouth rings and plenty of the crispy tentacles to make me happy, with a timbale of marinara sauce and lemon wedges. We both opted for the asparagus mascarpone soup and with the home made focaccia could’ve stopped there. Sister’s white veal lasagna was layers of pasta studded with peas, veal reduction, béchamel sauce, prosciutto, rich with flavour. My osso bucco was crazy good. Big bone full to the rim with unctuous marrow and tender, moist meat on a bed of risotto in a rich tomato based sauce. Could only manage eating the marrow and a half of the small osco bucco. The leftovers were delish Friday lunch! The wonderful people at La Verità sent us a nutello tiramisu with a sparkler. We tasted it but were too full. Also comped my sister with a cappuccino. And the final smile, Adam sang me happy birthday. One of the West Islands best restaurants. Can’t wait to return. More

My wife is a huge fan of New Orleans cuisine, and this was a night out to treat her (along with my parents). Our expectations were surpassed in every regard. Nolah’s location isn’t fancy - in a strip mall off of busy St-Jean Blvd north of the 40 - but the reason this restaurant is solidly booked for every service is the food. This chef-owned bistro has a tightly edited menu, a carefully curated wine list, well-crafted cocktails, and house-made desserts — and they excel at every turn. We shared appetizers - crab cakes, fried oysters, sweet potato fritters (our fave), and buttermilk fried chicken. Everything was melt-in-your-mouth tender, flavourful, rich; subtle spice heat was matched with creamy sauces. Fresh-baked bread was paired with small swirls of chipotle-infused butter - an early hint of the attention to detail this team puts into the experience. Mains were a blackened catfish topped with caviar over a warm sweet potato puree (unctuous, tender, cooked to perfection) with micro greens, a red pepper coulis and dabs of green pea puree; hearty shrimp Creole with jambalaya rice, and pan-seared scallops (on the same sweet potato puree as the catfish). Echoing Lesley Chesterman’s review from 2017, the caviar doesn’t seem to add much to the catfish, but it doesn’t subtract anything either. The crab cakes are generous arancini-sized balls rather than flattened patties; the texture of the crab meat is somewhat lost but the flavours are superb. We wished for something a little bright and acidic to pair with the fried oysters (a dash of lemon juice?). That said, all these are minor quibbles, and nothing really detracted from our meal. Desserts - the outstanding choice is the bread pudding and the Mississippi mud pie a close second. A special, the bananas foster cheesecake, could have been more caramelized (maybe a tableside flambé?) Staff are knowledgeable and made great cocktail suggestions (try the Sazerac). More
