The kitchen aims to cook very good produce, as simply as possible but with imagination and plenty of care. The menu is driven by what arrives from our suppliers each day.
Our wine list is international and offers roughly three quarters of our wines by the glass
Need to book at 7:30 PM?Other great restaurants with availability.
This was our second visit to Portland (it has been a year between visits - both times for lunch) and the food and experience was extremely good *yet again. Well prepared and presented food, with well paired flavours and deliciousness. Do try the snacks before the first course - especially the smoked cod's roe tartlet - my mouth is watering at the thought!. And any dish with mushrooms. The team here are friendly, efficient and accommodating.
The starting prices for wine are pricy (it is central London), but there was a good selection and the bottles we consumed were excellent. If you are of the generation that expects large portion sizes (quantity as opposed to quality) then this is not the restaurant for you. The food, as I said before, was delicious and perfectly portioned, with enough over four courses to ensure you are full, but not "stuffed". So please do go (we will be going again soon).
As our visit was a Saturday in January, the Restaurant was not full, but buzzy and jovial (it would be interesting to see if all the tables were full how the noise level would be for those hard of hearing).
Excellent food & service with a laid back almost casual vibe
Delicious food, lovely atmosphere and friendly service until the end of the meal when we were served a very tasty rhubarb and brown butter tart in an impenetrable pastry case - so difficult was it to cut into that I nearly lost it from my plate on a number of occasions. We didn’t complain as the tart did taste good and we wanted to finish it but the staff could obviously see us struggling and decided, rather than ask if everything was ok (as they had throughout the meal), to pretend as though nothing was wrong and avoided interacting with us as much as possible for the rest of the meal. Bit of a disappointing end to what had initially been a lovely birthday dinner for my husband and suddenly made it feel less worth the £200+ bill.
Another great meal the food has really improved under Theo Clench
Portland had been on our list for a while, so the 4 of us were quite excited when the date rolled around. We each had a starter, main and a dessert. We all agreed that while the scallop starter was amazing as was the amuse bouche, everything else was “just ok”. It will not be on the list for return.
Chose the Portland for lunch with the wife, and couldn't be happier that we did. Everything, from the service through to the food and drink and the atmosphere, was faultless. The staff were incredible throughout, and though I've eaten at quite a few Michelin starred restaurants, the guys in the kitchen came out with some of the best food I've ever eaten. Could not recommend this place more highly.
Highly recommended restaurant ever!
Warm welcoming staff and brilliant food:) It's an excellent experience in my anniversary Thank you so much
Just back from a lovely evening at Portland.
Great food, wonderful staff and great value for the tasting menu all while managing to feel like a friendly neighborhood restaurant.
Will def be back!
My wife and I went to Portland for our anniversary. It was very lovely.
Great food. Really good value. Purely in terms of taste, better than some two star places I have been to!
Outstanding meal. With a great wine list to choose from. Informal and delightful service. One of the very top meals of the year for us. Consider starting with what they call the “snacks” rather than starters per se unless you are really hungry. Price wise this is treat territory. But worth every penny
Enjoyed our lunch very much in a relaxed setting. Lovely touch to mark a birthday with handwritten card and cookie making gift. Food was very tasty, good flavours and beautifully presented without being pretentious. We would come again, thank you!
This is one of the most wonderful of restaurants in London
Our meal was memorable. From the moment we ordered the tasting menu and wine pairing, food was our table and our wine glasses were filled. Our water glasses wouldn't drop below half full before they were silently topped up.
The food was exquisite, exactly what you would expect from a restaurant of that caliber. We went for the lore expensive wine pairing option, and we didn't regret it. It paired beautifully with each course, and seemed to get better with every glass. The served a wide array of wines, providing a gentle transition throughout the meal.
Our only concern was the explanations for the food. Each dish was complex, with many ingredients and techniques, and we had difficulty understanding what our server was saying when he would describe them to us. It meant that for most dishes we would be enjoying something without knowing what we were eating.
Overall it was an amazing experience, and we would go back given the opportunity.
Food is definitely great and inspired. Prices are on the high side for this type of restaurant.
Fantastic Tasting Menu. Lovely lunchtime meal. Highly Recommend!
Very beautifully presented dishes and amazing dining experience.
The food was absolutely amazing; it lived up to and exceeded our expectations. The service was equally amazing and although quite tight in terms of proximity to other tables, this adds to the atmosphere - just a little difficult to negotiate going to the loo with a poorly foot (which was me!)
One of the best restaurants in London. Far more worth to spend than Michelin restaurants
Better than ever with Theo Clench at the helm
Excellent as always. Game Pithivier made me want to lick the plate. Another thoroughly enjoyable evening.
The Portland never disappoints! Exciting, creative flavours and textures- we never know what to expect yet always come away amazed and delighted!
The service was special. The staff were all very knowledgeable, personable yet professional. Very lovely attention to detail and small touches that went a long way. Our server gave my husband a birthday card signed by all of the staff along with ingredients and a recipe to take away to make his own sweet treat! Really lovely experience and would definitely visit again.
The staff was so amazing, very nice and accommodating.
Sat down and waited 20 mins before even an acknowledgement we were there. No offer of an aperitif. Staff rushing around like headless chickens. No personal service. For the price it’s a disaster
Came to celebrate my birthday with family - the staff went over and above to make the experience so special! The food was also amazing, couldn't fault it. Would definitely recommend for a special occasion!
Poor wine list need more affordable wines and selection no French sauvignon Blanc or selection of Loire wines
The food was exceptional. Along with welcoming staff with great knowledge of the menu. I am not a wine drinker however our waiter help us choose a wine that was a reasonable price and still great quality for each course. I will be returning.
It was amazing. I will be there ASAP
Delicious! Went there to celebrate my best friend's birthday! She went there to find a card addressed to her signed by all the staff and they gave her a birthday dessert which was very sweet and thoughtful! We had two bottles of really good bottles of Beaujolais that went very well with the tasting menu, which is very flexible and provides for pescatarian mixes and there is a completely separate vegetarian menu! Would totally return
