I visited this restaurant for a birthday celebration after hearing it was one of the standout spots in Charleston. Unfortunately, our experience didn’t match the reputation. Service was very slow from the beginning. I kept getting texts saying our table was ready, even though we had already been seated for over 30 minutes. It was confusing and gave the impression that the front-of-house operations weren’t well coordinated. I ordered the 8 oz filet medium rare, which turned out to be a thin end cut—not a proper center cut. It was overcooked on the outside to the point of being burnt and tough, and the middle was too thin to cook properly. I didn’t send it back because by then it was clear that getting a replacement would take too long. We also ordered the grouper special, which we were told came with a vegetable mix. It actually arrived with a lobster succotash. If we’d known it had shellfish, we wouldn’t have ordered it due to a mild allergy. For a $65 dish, being able to eat only part of it was disappointing. At the end of the meal, we asked for a single scoop of salted caramel ice cream just to mark the birthday. While the candle was complimentary, the ice cream was not—again, not a big deal, but it added to the overall feeling that this wasn’t a thoughtful or guest-focused experience. I really wanted this to be a great night, but it fell short across the board. For the price and the reputation, I expected much better.

My husband and I are former locals and love Peninsula Grill. As a result, we were really looking forward to our date night at PG, and things started off on the right foot. Bradley at the bar was fantastic—friendly, attentive, and really made us feel welcome. His service was a highlight of the evening and exactly the kind of experience you’d expect at a place like PG. Once we were seated, though, the experience started to slip. We were placed side by side, facing out into the restaurant rather than toward each other. Maybe that works for people who want to see and be seen, but we were there for a date night and just wanted to connect. When we asked to be moved to a table where we could actually see each other, the request was accommodated albeit a bit transactional. Not a big deal but strange. Our server, Cory, was unfortunately pretty underwhelming. He wasn’t rude, just not very engaging. When we asked questions about the menu, his answers were vague and not especially helpful. Instead of guiding us through the experience, he seemed more focused on upselling extra courses, which felt a bit obvious. We were most excited about the famous PG coconut cake, but by the time we finished our entrees, we were too full to enjoy it at the table. We decided to take a slice to go. Cory brought it out with the check almost immediately—which seemed surprisingly fast. Back at our hotel, we realized why: the cake tasted several days old. It was dry, stale, and definitely not the fresh, iconic dessert we had been looking forward to. All in all, the evening had a great start, but the rest of the experience didn’t live up to the hype. We really wanted to love it, but between the awkward seating, mediocre service, and stale cake, it just missed the mark.

Impeccable service and Outstanding food! So glad we decided to celebrate our anniversary at the Peninsula Grill. Our server Michelle was wonderful. She was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. We weren’t rushed at all and loved sitting in the courtyard. We enjoyed raw oysters, caviar, a steak and grilled salmon. My husband commented it was the best salmon he’s ever eaten. We enjoyed cocktails, the manhattan and old fashion, and red wine with dinner. The wine and cocktail list is extensive and something for everyone. We ended the perfect evening with the famous coconut cake. I would absolutely go back .

Peninsula Grill is so consistent and I know I can always rely on them to deliver when I have an important business dinner. In my opinion, a review of the Peninsula Grill begins and ends with “service.” It has always been consistent and well above average. The wait staff always knows the menu and specials well and can direct the dining party to the perfect choices. Next, the food is always consistently good. On this occasion, all three of us ordered the fish “special” of the day and it was wonderful. I cannot remember ever having a bad dish (whether appetizer, entree or dessert). Charleston has many great restaurants and Peninsula Grill is always in the top tier. Highly recommend!
