Mauro Mafrici is a Michelin starred Italian chef who has worked in some of the greatest international kitchens and luxury resort hotels of the world. His long resume of prestigious experiences in revered establishments culminated in the opening of his own critically acclaimed restaurant, Lo Scalco, in New York City which earned a coveted Michelin star in its first year open. Mauro has now brought his talents to Chicago with PELAGO.

The basis of Mauro’s cuisine is “sapori veri’: true, honest, genuine flavors used masterfully to create new sensations, forms and colors. Fresh seasonal ingredients from Italian and local sources will tantalize every taste bud as Mauro allows each bite to speak for itself in a clean, straightforward flavorful vocabulary. With each endeavor Mauro continues to look for new ways to incorporate regional Italian ingredients as he redefines Italian cooking.

This is without any doubt the best Italian restaurant in Chicago. A mix of authenticity, great ingredients and originality. I am an extremely critical Italian-born costumer and Pelago simply went over my expectations!

Another awesome experience. The chef made us branzino although it wasn’t on the menu. In my opinion it’s the 1st or second best upscale Italian restaurant in the city. Riccardo would be the only other restaurant in my opinion in the same league.

Every meal I’ve had at Pelago has been amazing! Their black truffle pasta is the best I’ve ever had and their fish is always superb. The ambiance is elegant but comfortable. It’s the perfect date spot!

Business meal with a customer. Our party ended up going from a 4 top to a deuce due to the flu. Service started out great but staff directed their attention to larger parties that came in after us. Even though i opened with a very nice bottle of wine and would have spent more on a second bottle we had to wait over 30 minutes after asking for the wine list again before anyone came back to ask if we found anything. Food was good but not over the top but the service made us expendable. Tried it once but will not be back for a second visit.

They were very attentive to our special requests for vegetarian options. Service was top notch. We ordered a truffle dish that was expensive, but it was amazing.

Food was delicious - both great taste and great presentation. Our waiter was very knowledgeable on the menu options and made some good recommendations (without being too pushy). We made reservation on short notice - it was close to our hotel. My only comment was that the open table price target of ‘$’ was a bit off base - this is a pricey restaurant and should be rated at least ‘$$’. All-in-all a great dining experience but definitely on the upper end of the price scale for a good Italian restaurant. Would certainly go again.

Pelago was a quiet, romantic setting. The fireplace was burning and only a few other tables were seated in the restaurant. The food was freshly made in house which took a bit longer to make but the wait was definitely worth it. Definitely the place to go for an anniversary or other special occasion.

Excellent pasta. We asked for a wine recommendation, and the waiter suggested an off the menu Chef reserve wine. Turns out this special wine that they suggested at $97 is sold a Binney’s for $13. We also made it clear from the beginning that we had 8:00 theater tickets. We asked for coffee and our check at 7:30. After multiple requests we paid the bill and ran out of the place at 7:55.

A lovely quiet dinner in beautiful surroundings. We had a tasting of four pastas and then Dover sole and lamb chops. The only negative is the $50 corkage to bring a bottle of wine.
