A local favorite of mine. Always a pleasure.
Vibrant ambience! A neighborhood gem! I'll be back for sure!
The Panama never disappoints, especially when the weather is nice and I can sit outside and enjoy a spectacular salad.
OK Good service
Really nice ambiance, good food, good service, can be a little loud inside.
Right smack dab in the middle of the residential section of San Rafael California is a cutie pie little hotel/restaurant, the Panama Hotel. Its a happening place and I was so wanting to try their restaurant especially for Valentine's Day.
My wife and I arrived to the din of the guests having fun. The hostess greeted us with a big smile, confirmed our reservation, and promptly showed us to our table.
As we walked to our table I noticed three things, 1. the portion sizes seemed large 2. the couple next to us had neither bread or rice or potato's on their table, another zero carb couple, and 3. sadly once again every one in the restaurant was younger then us. Its a trend, Ouch!
Hardly any time passed before our most attentive waiter greeted us, and served us our glasses of wine.
We each ordered steak and the tuna ceviche as an appetizer to share. The tuna ceviche looked incredible, served with rather ordinary store bought looking chips.... perhaps Doritos? After my wife took her first bite she looked at me as if to say, "God must have been the fisherman who brought us this fish". My wife is an easy grader, she is married to me. We split the ceviche right down the middle. I didn't finish mine, very unusual. The only two times I don't finish my meals, if I have the flu or its twelve hours before surgery.
Ceviche C to C-.
Next we were served our generously sized steaks. Our steaks were done to perfection, medium and medium rare respectively. The taste was okay but the steaks seemed fatty and had more then their fair share of gristle. Not our best choice.
Steak C to C-.
Will we be back? Don't know but on this night everything was perfect..................................except the food.
Lovely Valentines dinner with my wife and visiting sister. Everything was great about the experience.
Panama is my go to place for special occasions, a mid-week pick me up or summer lunch on the patio. I always leave in a good mood. The food is fresh and healthy. The service is excellent. The decor is kind of funky elegant, comfortable and charming.
Arrived at 6:15 for conversation before live music at 7. Charming decor and friendly staff. Seated in dining room as weather seemef too chilly for the enclosed patio. Delicious char-broiled burger and stuffed jalapeno dish for dinner. Live music was an enjoyable trio. Outstanding creme brulee for dessert. Finished our meal as the musicians took a break. A lovely evening the night before Valentine's Day.
Panama Hotel is a neighborhood favorite. Food and ambiance are wonderful. It’s a great little escape from the normal
routine. I love the charm of this place.
I had the butternut squash soup and the half avocado stuffed with crab meat, both were delicious. My husband had the burger and garlic fries and he loved his meal. It is a cute, kinda funky place.
Service was great, and some of the food was also. The avocado/crab appetizer was spectacular. The calamari salad was very good. The pasta dish was very good. The pork chop and its sauce were delicious, but the shredded whatever it was around it was strange. It was like eating a pork chop with a raw salad of carrots and jicama or something. I had expected some kind of cooked vegetable. So if they'd serve the chop with something nicer it would have been a perfect meal for all of us. The pinot noir I ordered, having asked for one on the sweeter side, was delicious, but, it had a heavy sulfite content and I got a stuffed nose half way through my glass, unfortunately. But I always enjoy Panama Hotel and this was the first even slight negative meal I've had there.
Love this place. Great atmosphere and good food. Nice to be able to have a conversation without raising your voice.
always lovely....enjoy! Service is always good. Sometimes a little too much garlic - but that's just me! Really nice for everyday dining or special occassions. The Baja salad is always on my list and I TRY to deviate, but......
This was a lovely find. It's not far from downtown San Rafael, but it's enough off the beaten path. We ate inside (there is also an outdoor patio), and the place has plenty of character. The server was nice and attentive.
We went for an early dinner on a Saturday night. It was about half filled, including a party of four seated next to us that carried a very interesting conversation. The restaurant is on the quiet side, at least at 630 on a Saturday evening, so conversations carry.
The calamari appetizer was a good amount to share, and I really liked the cilantro-lime vinaigrette.
She ordered the filet of salmon and liked everything except the beets. I had the full order of wild mushroom ravioli, which were very tasty. Both dishes were reasonably sized: more than enough to fill us, not enough for leftovers.
