About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Neighborhood gem
A culinary island in Southern Utah, the Painted Pony brings a touch of class--and intriguing flavors--to St. George. The restaurant, tucked away in Ancestor Square, is exceptionally clean and cozy, with contemporary art, fresh flowers, and -- in the evening -- a top notch romantic atmosphere with subdued lighting and patio dining.

If your surroundings don't clue you in, your first glance at the menu will. Painted Pony is not your standard fare. Contemporary American cuisine evidently doesn't mean just another good steakhouse, and the simply written food descriptions promise something new and intriguing for your palate.

The Painted Pony has perfected the fine art of using fresh ingredients and delicate flavoring. An exceptional wine list, generous portions, attentive service, and reasonable prices will convince you to return to "the Pony" anytime you're in St. George.

Restaurant is very nice, a bit upscale and somewhat hidden in a very peasant setting. Staff is very professional and attentive. We had the duck and it was excellent! Highly recommend for a 'date night'.

Great food and service! Bison was tasty, maybe a little on the pricier side, but still worth to try. Will def revisit

The service was impeccable, the food was fantastic and the venue is charming. The roasted lamb shank was both crispy and tender, and about the size of a dinosaur bone. The pork chop was similarly tender (sous vide?) and delightfully crispy on the outside. We split a large salad but eshewed dessert just on general principles, not on the basis of anything on offer. The restaurant has a close relationship with a local Utah winery (yup you can use those two words in the same sentence). We had the pinot noir. Let me begin by saying I am a bit of a pinot noir snob, have spent considerable time tasting (well, drinking) PNs in the Willamette Valley, the Russian River, Burgundy and other parts of Europe. The Utah wine was competitive on the heavier end of PN spectrum (I favor the lighter end). It was a bit tannic, suggesting that it could sit a bit. At $75, the bottle was a bit pricey, but then again I suspect the vineyard yields might be low and it is always expensive to be a pioneer. In short, Painted Pony is a real gem and a rare find in a small SW Utah town. We'll go back on our next trek from hot AZ to cool ID, or vice versa.

I felt confident eating there even having celiacs that my food would be prepared well. I was over the moon with the service.

Love this restaurant and never a disappointment. Food is always excellent but was not a fan of the dish I ordered this time. Other than that always a 5-star.

A yummy meal, we tried the porchetta-wrapped chicken to share, along with whipped potatoes and their amazing Green Goddess Salad. The steaks are our favorite, but it's always fun to try new seasonal dishes.
