What Insiders Are Saying
A very neighborhoody sushi spot in Hayes, with high-quality fish at reasonable prices.
Precise execution and preparation of sushi. The sushi sizes borderline on being miniature. But the quality of fish is high. Kids have the tempura udon and that is not good, noodles became sticky, tempura oil doesn't taste good, the shrimp has no taste. Sushi and rolls are recommended. The ambiance is more a local neighborhood restaurant which is lovely, but the price are set like a more elegant restaurant. I would come back for the food anyways.
Great food! Wonderful service! One of my favorite sushi restaurants in San Francisco! Always come back!
Perfect spot for a pre performance dinner.
Wonderful neighborhood restaurant. Very good variety of sushi from japan and local, plus inventive tapas. Great host and staff.
Small portions for the price, but it was good. The Otoro roll was delicious. Minimalist decor.
everything is always excellent there! Jimmy is the best host .
Very good food, excellent service, but quite noisy as there is nothing to break the noise
Killer rolls, ambiance and service! Definitely going back..
Great boutique sushi spot, small family environment with big hug from sushi!
Otoro is my favorite SF sushi bar. Their small dishes and rolls are the freshest and most creative in town. The owner is friendly and service efficient. It’s getting so I cone once a week!
Great place before show at SF jazz or Davies, etc. Food was great... Lots of options and service was quick and efficient knowing we had a show to get to. Would go again.
The meal was disappointing and a little strange. We were initially seated at the counter but asked to move to an empty table. The host said we could have the table next to the empty one once the people sitting there left. I’m not sure why we couldn’t just have the empty table, as it was identical. It’s not a huge deal, but it took a while and set a weird tone. We had a reservation, and the people who were eventually seated there didn’t look like they’d requested that particular table.
The chicken karage didn’t come with the usual spicy mayo. The omega spicy roll and Golden State roll were both fine. The glazed cod was tender but the portion was small. The dynamite scallop was awful. It tasted like fishy ketchup. The scallop meat was so tough that it was unidentifiable. One of the worst bites of food I’ve had in recent memory.
“Neighborhood gem” is becoming a red flag for me.
I love Otoro. High quality and always fresh sushi. Friendly service and interesting dishes.
The service was excellent and I really appreciate the patience and understanding the servers had as we were trying to rush through our meal. Due to traffic one of our guests was late and we had a show to attend shortly after our meal. The ambiance was cozy and felt like a special place. I only wish we didn't have to rush and could fully enjoy the experience you they had to offer. We will definitely be back to do it right :) Agedashi tofu was delicious (not too gingery, not soggy) The O-toro roll was excellent - I mean, mango and spicy tuna? what a refreshing combo!
All in all pretty good
Somewhat predictable but good
Not a great vibe. Food is bland. Won't be back. Sushi in SF is weak sauce.
We had a wonderful meal. The sushi was everything we could want. The staff was very friendly and attentive. It wasn’t quick but it was worth it.
The food was innovative - tried the Volcano and spicy tuna roll - and well spiced. The service was spot on and the menu has many items to be tried on future visits. Very friendly vibe.
Otoro Sushi is tiny. They can sit only a few people at a time. They make up for it by providing quick and gracious service. Food is good, not the best I have eaten, but good. Certainly worth a try.
We had a reservation but arrived 30-mins ahead of time. But the manager was very accomodating and got us a table right away.
The food we ordered all came satisfactory. Pricing was reasonable.
Will be back next time visiting San Francisco.
Excellent, creative, Japanese food. Expensive, but good value for $ paid. I would definitely eat here again.
First time visiting Otoro and was very impressed - food was absolutely delicious and service was fantastic. Highly recommend and will be back.
Excellent sushi! Love to find a great local spot when traveling. Would definitely recommend the Lava roll and the Otoro roll!
Great food and service. Reasonably priced. Our go to place for sushe and sake
Loved the food, I didn't feel like they have enough wait staff. The rolls are excellent. It just took a long time for us to actually place our order and to even get drinks, but the food is good so I would go back to try other rolls.
I wanted a girls night with an intimate yet casual vibe. This fit the bill. They’re a good value, and service was good enough. I love O Toro!
Always a pleasure, Otoro Sushi delivers fresh, beautifully presented sushi, sashimi, and other Japanese foods in a comfortable, friendly atmosphere. This is very high quality sushi, good service, and decent value. I have been going here for several years and return regularly. Try it.
wonderful, delicate dishes made with finesse. great vegie options, too.
This place is always great. Been here many times. Love it!
The food is always great here!
Lovely food, thanks for accommodating us even though we were late to the reservation. Would definitely come again, delicious
The sushi we had here was excellent, and the place was VERY similar to sushi places in Tokyo--a real plus. It was more expensive that I expected (eg, two pieces of delicious fresh mackerel on sushi-rice for $9), and the service was generally just OK. We arrived about 13 minutes after the time we had reserved on OpenTable because of difficulty in parking, and the host did not get to us for a few minutes after we arrived because he was dealing with an earlier person. The host then told us that they had canceled our reservation because we were too late but that they did have a table. Being scolded by the host, particularly unfairly since we had arrived within the 15-minute window, made the start of the experience quite unpleasant. I don't think that we will go there again, despite the excellent fish.
Food here is always good. Service is excellent. Usually feel very satisfied leaving this restaurant.
Favorite sushi place! Get the Otoro roll, you won’t regret it
I was expecting the top quality of the fish given its rating and price range. But what a disappointment, the toro is not very fresh. Sushi rolls are so so, but again, the quality of the fish is just not impressive at all. The cooked food (beef soba, tara, shoyu ramen) is okay, but they are way too salty. Overall, this place is overrated, and made me expect something of Umi or Grubbies...
We went there for my wife’s birthday. She chose the place because we had been there once before and were impressed. It did not disappoint the second time. The food was delicious and the service excellent. The Monkfish pate was the highlight!
Have visited Otoro Sushi many, many times and it consistently excels in every facet of our meal. It is by far our favorite sushi place for so many reasons, like the freshest and most professionally-prepared sushi. Flavors are superb, service excellent--this is the sushi place to go in Hayes Valley!
So much better at lunch, than dinner. I am a fan but it was not the best experience that night
Delicious, fresh and well presented sushi. Everything was fresh and service was attentive and we never felt rushed, even though it was a Friday night.
