Otium is a contemporary restaurant that draws from the rich culinary heritage of Timothy Hollingsworth. It is designed to be a social restaurant with a dramatic open kitchen merging indoor and outdoor spaces. The restaurant’s name, Otium, has its roots in Latin. A word that is meant to emphasize a place where time can be spent on leisurely social activities, both eating and drinking; adjacent to one of Los Angeles" most important cultural streets—Grand Avenue—and next to its newest, most vibrant addition, the contemporary art museum, The Broad. The restaurant draws inspiration from the 100-year-old olive trees planted in Broad Plaza by utilizing rustic cooking with live fire and sustainable ingredients grown in the garden of the restaurant’s mezzanine. Otium strips away the rigid formalities of dining while focusing on the quality of food, warm service, and relaxed casual ambience.

Okay not great. I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant in particular. Added Salmon at lunch was really too small. They had no vegetables to replace spinach, except lettuce that wasn’t dressed. Rather poor selection on the menu. Service was okay, not overly friendly or helpful.

This restaurant is simply spectacular. I had some of the best food, and definitely the best chicken & potato dish, I have had perhaps ever - second only to a dish I enjoyed at Chez Panisse many moons ago. The ambiance was upbeat and classy, yet comfortable, as was the service. The sommelier, a lovely woman, was simply fabulous!

We love this place but we kind of got lost with some of our food coming out very late which kind of panicked us since we had theater tickets.

I’ve been to Otium twice, once for lunch and now for dinner. I must say the dinner menu is by far the better option. The best thing Otium does with its dishes is mix and match flavors for some amazing combinations. One surprising dish that could have been the whole meal was the fresh baked nan bread with garlic butter and chicken liver mousse. Another is the scallops with sweet potato purée. The restaurant is also better suited for date nights or group dining because of its family style of service. That I don’t mind, of course, because that means more flavors to taste. The only downside to the menu are the desserts. There really isn’t much variety, and what’s there isn’t enticing. You do pay a pretty penny for the quality of food, but it’s worth it. Overall, an excellent dining experience that I would recommend to anyone visiting Los Angeles.

Very surprised at how mediocre (even terrible?) my last dining experience at Otium was. Having been once before many years ago and reading reviews that Otium had "finally found its groove," I had high but I thought reasonable expectations. Food was still good, though I found the signature black cod to be tough. But service as a whole was very off. Waiter was very friendly, but our final course did not arrive until at least twenty minutes after our prior round was cleared. New plates were hot when put down, cold when the dish finally arrived. Then, waiter brought us a check with what looked like two tables' orders combined, charging us for twice what we had actually ordered. Perhaps hoping to defray frustration at the situation, the waiter made a joke about the mistake, but did not apologize. Not cool.

A friend and I went for an early dinner before a performance. Service was really exceptional, knowledgeable and friendly. We shared four dishes, all delicious. I had one of the best martinis I’ve ever had. Highly recommend, looking forward to returning.

Food was excellent. We had grilled fish and farro salad that were delicious. Expensive.

I have eaten there many times and have thought the food was fantastic. However we told server we were going to the theater, and our entry took an hour and ten minutes. When it came it was not what we ordered, and awful. They comped us (we didn't have to pay) but what an incredible disappointing experience.

Chicken was not as well cooked compared to previous visits. However, the potatoes are still amazing.

New Year’s Eve celebration. Pre-fix dinner a little pricey with wine paring but very good. Service was excellent! Would definitely return for dinner. Great ambiance and location near DTLA.
