The food was amazing. I give five stars for sure.
We celebrated our anniversary here and it was amazing. The food was delicious, the staff were very attentive and amazing, and the ambiance was spectacular. We had a great time celebrating our anniversary here and would definitely recommend this restaurant for any celebrations and special occasions.
Amazing service and food was awesome!
One star off today for the signature pineapple upside down cake. Being in Hawaii, I thought you’d fine a nice amount of pineapple on the bottom, as it used to be. This time, a few tiny dice was all we got, negating the “pineapple” in the name. You can find your way back to the rich caramelized pineapple of yesterday!
Kalena & his Hui of Magicians made a special evening that much better. He guided us through the menu and we were beyond pleased with his recommendations. The Hui kept visiting and entertaining us. We really enjoyed our experience. Please Mahalo Kalena guys for us. We'll be back. A Hui hou Cheeehuuu 🤙back to ogg.
We've dined at the original Roy's since its early days, when it was the only Roy's. It used to be an exciting experience and a guaranteed top-flight meal with creative touches that reflected Roy's status as a pioneer of Hawaii fusion cuisine. For several years, the kitchen has seemed to be resting on its laurels, delivering food not up to its former high standards, at fine-dining prices. This dinner followed the trend.
We both had the "al fresco" prix fixe menu. First course, two slices of blackened tataki-style ahi and kiawe-smoked baby back ribs in an Asian sesame sauce. Second course, surf & turf combo of braised beef shortribs and macadamia nut crusted fish (that night, shutome) with orzo and vegetables. Dessert, lemon cheesecake.
Everything was edible, though the fish was overdone and a bit dry (not typical of fish preparation in good restaurants here). The cauliflower and carrots were barely steamed, so crisp that it was hard to stick a fork in the carrots. The boneless shortribs were very tender, best thing in the meal.
Granted that this menu is designed around familiar signature dishes, still, the preparation overall, including sauces, seemed very rote, not bringing out flavors of fresh ingredients, just going through the motions. Maybe a la carte would have been a better bet. Recent experiences with sushi have been better too.
Service remains a strong point. When we asked for an outside table, rather than just saying no, the hostess took a minute to check for an upcoming opening. Wait staff were, as always, efficient, knowledgeable, and friendly. Too bad they don't have food to serve that lives up to Roy's stellar reputation. Maybe this is what happens after 30 years as a top tourist dining destination; it's enough to keep doing the same old thing, though not up to the old high standard.
From the hospitable service by everyone you encounter to the amazing views to the exquisite selection of one of a kind entrees, Roy’s never disappoints!
Food and table service in main dinning room excellent.
Being seated in back dinning room at 5:15pm as sun is going down not good. Glare from sun not good.
Awesome! Never would have thought the ribeye would have been the best I've had. Service always outstanding!
I’m sorry to say, but this restaurant is past its prime.
The food was delicious and the service was excellent! We felt like very special guests.
We've never been to Roy's in California or in Hawaii. This was our very first visit and it didn't disappoint! It was my husband's birthday so they greeted us with a little party hat. We started with the hamacho app which melted in our mouths! The fillet was perfectly grilled at med/Rare and the butterfish was fresh and buttery.
We went in the evening so we werent able to enjoy the view, but I suspect that the highway would have probably sullied it. Nonetheless, the tables were spaced in adherance to the state requirements and everyone wore masks.
I'm glad our first visit to Roy's Original was our first now the other Roy's restaurants have a really high bar to meet!
We observed a beautiful sunset, enjoyed delicious food, and was lavished with attention and service. Lovely evening.
All of our food was great. Server was knowledgeable of the menu and had suggestions that were awesome for menu choices! We will be back here. The crispy zucchini, butterfish and tasting menu were amazing!
Incredibly good food. My wife has the Kauai Prawns and I had the beef short rib. The drinks were very flavorful too.
Our food was excellent. We sat outside and it was lovely. The only downside was the martini which was rather small and with a large side of lemon when we requested a twist.
Everything was fantastic! Would eat here again and again if I could!
Roy's has incredible food choices that are expertly prepared and tastes amazing. They made our 10th anniversary dinner very special.
Nice! Sadly got there after sunset so much of the ambience was lost on us. Service was good - food great. The misoyaki butterfish was delicious!!
We sat outdoors, and it felt like our orders were being forgotten. It took a long time to get our food from the appetizers to the dessert. There was also a rat running around outside and the hostess was notified. Her response was “yeah he comes around often, but thats gross, im out”. The waiter didn’t apologize for the long food wait, and wasn’t friendly or personable at all. The food was good, but some of the components came out cold.
We had a lovely last dinner in Oahu here last night. The food was amazing and service was top notch. My husband couldn’t decide between the meatloaf and braised short ribs so our amazing waiter (and now I sadly cannot remember her name because she was truly so sweet) surprised him by giving him 2 half entrees so he could try both! I had the delicious butterfish and we started with the Bandito roll. Our favorite sushi roll we had on Oahu or quite possibly ever. So so good! Our meal was finished off with a delicious dessert for our honeymoon. If we were staying here longer, we’d return for a second time.
Service was great everyone was very attentive
We loved it. View was beautiful, service excellent and food was delicious!
Having dined here many times, we have found the food, service, and ambiance to be as outstanding as it has always been. Congratulations to Chef Roy for keeping these high standards in place.
Excellent service and food as always
Wonderful as always. Great fresh seafood.
Always a favorite. Special note— the limited staff is doing all possible to provide excellent service.
Absolutely a must in Oahu!!! Get the baby back ribs- you will NOT regret it!!
The food and atmosphere was outstanding.
Our server was wonderful. We felt a bit rushed (not by our server, but other workers) like they wanted to turn the table quick…not really ok for fine dining.
Wow. The most amazing food on the island! Incredibly tasty.
Food was very good! Drinks could use some work, very sugary and limited bottle selection
Great service, food, ambiance! We did the 3 course meal and it was just perfect and my son who "hates" fish loved the moon fish and ahi tuna!! Soon good!
This was one of our favorite dining experiences. We enjoyed an outdoor table with a beautiful evening view of the ocean. The service was very friendly and efficient. The food was delicious, and especially our entree which featured opa, salmon and butterfish. The chocolate souffle was perfect too. It was a wonderful way to celebrate a special birthday.
Roy’s was amazing! The ambience was wonderful for an evening dinner, since you can sit outdoors or indoors and have great views.
The service was spectacular - they really made us feel special for our anniversary and helped to celebrate. Loved the food too, especially the dessert .
Would 100% recommend and come back!
Service was so friendly and professional. Food was phenomenal with excellent recommendations from the server. Other staff members were really helpful when we needed something. The soufflé is to die for. Thank you for an amazing evening!
We had a great time here for dinner. But we were seated in a far corner of the restaurant, due to Covid protocols. All in all we had a great pre fixe dinner!
Good except for the tasteless pork belly. Under seasoned pork chops flavor. Chocolate soufflé is exceptional as is the 20 year old Dow's tawny porter.
Amazing dining experience, from making online reservation and confirmation, ambiance, food, service, Original Roy’s is the full package.
The staff was superb, the butterfish divine and the setting lovely.
