Although the food was good it's nothing that was outstanding that we couldn't find at other high end restaurants. We ordered the herb crusted rack of lamb, atlantic salmon, and the blackened ahi for our entrees.
Best meal we’ve had at Roy’s! The staff was excellent, helpful but not intrusive. The food was better than it’s ever been and one person in the party had a gluten allergy which they catered to wonderfully.
Roy's is the place we go for special occasions. It has excellent food and the service is impeccable!
We had a very nice anniversary dinner with a spectacular view of the sun setting into the sea! The food was prepared and presented beautifully. The portions are small, but by the time we had the delicious chocolate lava cake with Lapperts ice cream, we were very satisfied.
We celebrated birthdays twice in November at Roy's because of the outstanding miso butterfish. The memory of the butterfish was mouthwatering so we returned to be disappointed. The fish was overdone, burnt and dry. I was surprised the chef would allow the entre' to leave the grill to the table. Quality control was poor that evening. However the service was excellent and every staff was on board, attentive, friendly and accommodating.
The place is nice but the food is much worse than I expected. One of our appetizers had the tiniest fish on the top of a sushi roll. Entries were all just mediocre and a desert that is supposed to be hot came to be Just about room temperature. The drinks are nothing special. The only positive thing was the service was still good and the kids liked the fish in the pond!
Disappointed. Service was slow, food was not hot when received. Long delay between 1st course and main course. Overpriced for the quality of the food and service
The only issue was our entree was cold when it arrived at table. Server took it back to reheat then comped our dessert.
Overall a good experience.
Sadly disappointed with our recent experience at Roy’s. Two of our usual dishes were prepared differently and not very enjoyable. Portions were also smaller. Will be looking for someplace else to celebrate birthdays. :(
Great service! Awesome ambiance!
Let me start by saying the food was very good BUT everything else was subpar. I asked for a nice table with a view. Arrived on time and was seated at a round table for 8 people when there was only 4 of us. Huge table smack across from the service counter where they get drinks, water, napkins,
Dishes, etc. Absolutely NO ambiance whatever! When I asked for a nicer, different table (as requested online on open table) we were seated upstairs at a crappy corner table with the light so bright, I felt like I was being interrogated. Had to ask to turn the lights down. Waiter was very loud and not very attentive. Food was good but was my least favorite place that we are at all week. Atmosphere upstairs sucked. Service was so- so. Prices were rather expensive.
Food is dated. Long time fans of Roy’s…and sadly disappointed with recent visit for special occasion.
Classic trio, including butterfish was cold with what seemed liked prior cooked (overcooked at that) mahi and salmon. Sad portions as well for $50! Common Roy!…we’re not all tourists!
Kauai shipment with cold undercooked ravioli pasta, also cold. We left feeling like we just finished a meal prepared for a picnic, not sit down meal.
The original Roy’s in Hawaii Kai is just that, sadly dated, drab, dingy with cold food.
Enjoyable meal, service was excellent. Seafood and drinks were fantastic.
We moved to Hawaii!
The food was good however the ambience wasn’t up to the mark.
Dined here for Thanksgiving. It was very special, service, quality of the fish. Simply amazing flavors and options. If you are looking for Hawaiian Asian Fusion you need to try Roy's!
Our annual trip to Oahu always includes a visit to Original Roy’s. This year brought us during the Thanksgiving holiday and we were very excited to dine here. Unfortunately a few misses. First our meal was rushed and we specifically told our server to spread out our meal and we fully understood the two hour limit per table. Our appetizer came concurrently with the Thanksgiving special salad. Okay not a big deal. The kimchi on the Canoe sampler was warm as the kitchen plated this under the warmer while waiting for other items to add to the plate. Certain foods are supposed to be cold or hot. We told our sever - how about our apologies can we bring you a new cold one instead? Dinner came shortly after the appetizer. My husband and I ordered the Thanksgiving pre-fixe. It was ok not a lot of flavor from the turkey but generous portion. My son ordered butter fish which was very good. Not a minute after dinner our dessert came right away. We asked to pace our meal when we sat down. We have loved Roy’s but this visit left us underwhelmed and somewhat disappointed. We understand the pandemic has been hard for everyone but for the prices charged there needs to be better training and QA.
Had the Thanksgiving dinner, sides and dessert was good; however, turkey didn’t have much taste and cranberry sauce was a bit sour side.
We’ve dined at Roy’s pre pandemic and had the expectation of a holiday meal for Thanksgiving. Service was excellent but the food was subpar given the price. I had the Palabok with cold and dry lobster meat and grainy risotto, my husband’s chicken was also less than desirable. My son - who eats everything - had the fish trio and he took a small bite of the Mac nut crusted fish and stopped. Sat indoors on second floor that needs an update. Overall probably not worth a return trip, which is disappointing since it’s one of the nicer places on the east side.
Always excellent food. Service was less than normal last visit, but back up to usual excellence this trip. All restaurants are struggling with mandated spacing, Roy’s is using their party room to seat patrons. This is the second time we have been seated there, much different atmosphere than the main dining room.
Amazing dinner! Loved the flying dragon roll
Very dated environment and feel. Overall none of us were impressed with anything we ate drank or experienced. :/
Had an amazing meal at Roy’s last night. Everyone got apps and meals that were so deliciously made.
Save room for dessert though!
And the Mai tai was best I ever had. Definitely a restaurant worth going to again…and again!
Service was very slow we waited quite a while to get our main dish. Several banging of dishes and someone dropped dishes , cocktails were too sweet too much simple syrup didn’t enjoy at all. Didn’t bother to order after it seems too busy hardly our waiter
came by just to quickly ask how’s the food and came back to give the check while we were still got served with our desserts.
Turned me off as if they need the table and wants us to be out
in fact they were the ones who were delayed in serving our meal.
Fantastic service and a great meal. Loved it for a apraxia’s occasion as well as a family meal.
Just a good today as it was 20+ years ago! Thanks.
Main waiter was awesome and others that help were too. Hostesses were wonderful! Wife and 2 kids bday and they took of care of us with so many desserts treats, entire family thank the wonderful experience here 😃
Loved our dinner at Roys. Excellent as always
Wonderful evening! Loved the zucchini bao appetizer (you have to order, you won't be disappointed!), and I always order appetizer portion of seared ahi and butterfish together as an entree ending off with Roy's hot lava chocolate cake. Thank you, Roy!
Roy's Hawaii Kai was the perfect place to celebrate our anniversary! We had an amazing, private window seat, overlooking the ocean sunset. The meal was superb from start to finish, and the bottle of house Pinot was very reasonably priced for the quality of the wine. The entire staff wished us happy anniversary, and we received a complimentary dessert and $25 coupon for our next visit. Thank you, Roy's, for making our evening so special!
We have been coming to Hawaii for years and this was our first time at Roy's (the original Roy's) and we could not have been more impressed. The food was excellent, our waitress was professional, engaging, and attentive - but not obtrusive. I would highly recommend Roy's.
Fabulous dinner during sunset (the traffic can be a little loud, but Roy's has no control over that!) Food was amazing, wish I had a few more bites of each item.
Roy's is consistently high quality food with friendly, attentive service. What's not to like? Prices have edged up, but it seems to be the inflationary trend right now.
Great food. Great service.
Beautiful view, great service, delicious food. Expensive for sure so can’t go all the time, but enjoyed our evening!
Great food!!! I love the lamb with the risotto. Waikiki should also have the lamb in their menu!!!
Average place, average service, and the food was good albeit pricey. Chocolate souffle was excellent. However, my big disappointment was that their website said they had a happy hour. We intentionally booked an early reservation because of that. When we were seated and asked about happy hour specials they unappologetically said they had cancelled their happy hour; no explanation was offered.
Room was cold. Filet mignon surprisingly overpriced but taste and presentation of food excellent.
The food was good. The chocolate mousse was very good. The service staff are enthusiastic but not well trained. Overall, it didnt have the fine dining experience I was hoping for. Things like stained tableclothes, they gave me paper towels to wipe my hands from their oily edamame when I asked for napkins, the wait staff hang around the bar and chatter kinda loudly with each other, the hostesses have very little finesse. It just wasnt worth the money they charged even though it was good food.
Roy’s in Hawaii Kai never disappoints us. They’ve managed to find the recipe for everything good in a restaurant!
