Operacaffe Ratings and Reviews
The service here was delightfully attentive, friendly, and efficient. The setting is downtown, across from the Balboa Theater and 4'short blocks from the Civic Theater. Great for pre and post - theater. Nice atmosphere though casual. Delicious food, well prepared. Good wine selection. Recommended.
Excellent food and service. Come early if you need to get to theatre as a lot of people come around the same time and then it takes a while to get your entree. The prices are a little high. If they included a basic dinner salad it would be a better value for the price.
This was our second visit. Both times were booked in advance of our seeing a show at the SD Repertory Theatre across the street. As the first time, we really enjoyed our dinner and would highly recommend this restaurant for virtually any kind of occasion. It is certainly a welcome relief form larger, less intimate restaurants. All of the food was really good, with special kudos to the desserts.
The service in OperaCaffe was excellent. My wife and I dined with another couple and had a fun time.My wife loved her filet mignon(5 stars) but my pasta with seafood was, in my opinion, bland with almost no taste(2 stars). The shrimp was bad and the scallops were tiny and tasteless. On the other hand everyone else at our table enjoyed their food.
The food here was AMAZING. The atmosphere was just ok. The service was not good. We made a reservation on Open Table for New Year's Eve but were disappointed with the way we were treated from the start. The hostess took us to our table and before we could even sit down said "They probably didn't tell you this over the phone but tonight we have a $25/person minimum." We're from out of town and out for New Years Eve at a nice-ish restaurant - obviously we would be spending that anyways. But also I'm 99% she made that up on the spot because we were two young-ish couples. I didn't hear anyone else being told that as they were seated and the waiter never said anything. I thought this was odd, but let it go. Our waiter wasn't very attentive but was ok. The real kicker was when we left the restaurant. We were walking out and the hostess wished us a Happy New Year, literally right after we walk out the door, the couple we were with realized they had left their leftover pasta boxed up on the table. The turned around to hurry and grab it to find the hostess BLOCKING the door and saying "WE DON"T HAVE A PUBLIC RESTROOM!" we had literally just left and she'd already forgotten who we were. They explained they had just been there and were just getting their food and she let them by. She then sat down next to her coworker and said "they just looked like random people trying to get into our bathroom!" We're two young professional couples in our late 20's that were dressed nicely, although I was wearing a beanie because it was late and cold outside, so unless you're impeccably dressed and look like you have money - don't bother.
Went to Operacaffe pre theater--we were seated quickly. Menu was very nice, had good variety--specials complemented the regular menu. Nice wine by glass and beer selection and good advice on the wines. We split the bruschetta which was very good. My husband had the veal parmesan--excellent. I asked the waiter if I should go with the veal or try one of the specials (Pasta with Eggplant and Mozzarella), which was less expensive than the veal--he said I should try the Pasta. His recommendation was great for two reasons (1) a lot of waiters would have picked the more expensive dish and (2) the Pasta was absolutely wonderful. We split the cannoli for dessert--they were wonderful. We will be coming back soon!
This restaurant is outstanding! My friends and I have been here three times in the past four days. The entire menu, from steak to pasta to pizza, is truly delicious. They take pride in their amazing food and service. They treat you like family. Patrizia, the owner and cook, even recognized us from the day before and welcomed us graciously back. If you are looking for somewhere very special to dine, you MUST go to OperaCaffe! Trust me, you will not be disappointed!
Food was absolutely delicious. Authentic italian taste. Wine selection was good. I give four stars because hostess was frazzled, and because our waiter assumed my boyfriend was tasting the bottle of wine we ordered even though I ordered it. Besides that our experience was great. Would come back again.
To be fair... It was Xmas day. Maybe they were understaffed? My daughter spilled her apple juice and it took a long time before we could get help to wipe it. Didn't offer to replace her apple juice. Plus had to ask several times for more napkins and waiter kept forgetting. They also delayed in getting other things like sugar for coffee or extra drink.
Came here for an early dinner before seeing a play at the Lyceum Theater, with a friend. We also had a Groupon. My friend had chicken parmeasan , which was a large portion accompanied by spaghetti. I had porcini mushroom ravioli, which was very good as well. Service was attentive, but not overbearing, and the table nicely set, although with paper napkins where cloth would have been much more appropriate. We did not have dessert as we were both full from our entree.
Wow, the perfect Italian restaurant in San Diego. Took the family here after seeing a Sat. afternoon show of the Nutcracker at the Civic Theater. I highly recommend this restaurant with great service, excellent food, and cozy atmosphere. Make sure to leave room for dessert. We shared the cannoli and tiramisu. We'll definitely be returning.
Our dinner at Operacaffe was most enjoyable. We met friends there for dinner prior to a show at the Balboa Theater which is right across the street making it very convenient! The waiter provided very good service and the food was delicious. We’ll definitely be back.
My family visited Operacaffe following a symphony performance. We were seated immediately. We were offered bottled or tap water and drinks. Warm bread was also brought to the table. We ordered appetizers -- the calamari was just okay, but the rice balls were excellent. For my entree, I ordered one of the chef's specials which was Pappardelle with duck ragu and truffle oil -- I was surprised by the addition of some orange in the dish -- it was excellent! Everyone in my family enjoyed their order. We were too full to order any dessert. I would definitely recommend this place which I found to be a step up from most Italian restaurants in the area.
We had dined here on our previous trips to San Diego. This time we brought our friends and the dinner was amazing as usual! Our friends were as impressed with the food and service as we have been each time we've dined here! Excellent food, excellent service. The server recommended one of the ravioli dishes to me and it was outstanding. All four of us had a wonderful meal that we talked about all weekend! Love the Operacaffe!!
My husband and I were seeing a show across the street and made a reservation for dinner at Operacaffe. The atmosphere was nice, it felt like a neighborhood trattoria. The waiter was attentive and friendly and the service was prompt. The focaccia bread was served warm with olive oil and balsamic vinegar and was delicious. We split a very nice salad to start with avocado and hearts of palm making it unique and the light dressing making it a wonderful beginning. We both ordered veal dishes, something we don't frequently order, and we were pleased with the tender meat and flavorful sauces. My saltimbocca alla romana was served with a wonderfully creamy risotto and fresh asparagus and my husband's veal parmigiana was served with tasty pasta pomodoro. We would definitely recommend this restaurant, especially if you are seeing a show across the street at the Balboa Theater.
This place was unexpected. This area of San Diego has a WIDE variety of people, so be prepared for that. The food was amazing. That was why we selected this restaurant. They claimed to make home-made pastas and the do!! The service was very good as well, and speedy.
Such an amazing find! The food is fantastic! We had the crab ravioli and lobster tortellini and truly thought we were in food heaven! And the desserts were amazing too! We enjoyed the tiramisu! Oh so good! We also had a frozen chocolate dessert that was out of the world! I highly recommend Operacaffe.
Wonderful food. Started with the polenta with ham, mushrooms and Gorgonzola cheese. Highly recommend it. Tortellini stuffed with crab was to die for. Service started out good as it was not busy. As the evening progressed, the restaurant filled up and it was very unorganized. Perhaps they were short staffed. I was thankful we had allowed plenty of time before the show at the Balboa Theatre.
