Market Place Tavern is the latest concept and restaurant for Market Hospitality Group (MHG). The Tavern which overlooks the Litchfield Green, is the oldest public building in town and one of the oldest penal facilities in the state. It was built in 1812 to serve as a jail for British prisoners during the War of 1812. A cell block and a three-story wing with additional cell blocks, which now is part of the restaurant’s bar area, was added in 1846. The jail closed in 1992 and was used as a treatment center for men serving prison sentences. It shut down again in 1993 and reopened in 1994 as a rehabilitation center for women facing incarceration. When that center closed, the state decided to sell it.The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and features “American Tavern Food” with Craft Beers and Cocktails made with local spirits.     From the moment we walked into the restaurant it was wonderful. The host that seated us was friendly and very gracious. Our waiter was also friendly and knowledgeable. Ambience fabulous….Our food was delicious, I think my potatoes could have been hotter, but they and everything I had was delicious. My sister also enjoyed her meal…the cappuccino was probably one of the best I have ever had. We really enjoyed it, just try to find a way to keep the potatoes hot from plating to serving.

    A whimsical tasting journey. We had the yellowtail tartare it was fresh and balances. The popping of the wasabi caviar was delightful. The duo of duck was perfectly cooked, tender and juicy. We will be back to try more!!

    My first visit there sat at the bar. Chris makes incredible cocktails best I’ve had the food was extraordinary. Service was amazing. Atmosphere was wonderful. Will definitely be coming back repeatedly. Thank you for an incredible evening, Margaret.

    First time dining here. We were very impressed with the entire experience. Greeted immediately as we entered and seated right away. Our waitress was excellent. Everyone in our party enjoyed their dinner choices and cocktails. Definitely going back soon.
