About Montano's - Roanoke
Philip Montano always dreamed of owning his own delicatessen. In 1969, he opened Chef’s International Gourmet in the Roanoke Valley. His place was the first gourmet specialty shop in the area and it was a tough sell. Montano won customers with quality specialty ingredients on his shelves, a bright smile and a warm nature.
In 1988, the permanent location for Montano’s opened at Townside Festival Mall with 150 seats and a small but well stocked gourmet shop, complete with delicatessen, wine selection and imported beer area.
The restaurant now seats 252 and includes a private banquet room, an outdoor cafe and a 40 foot carved wood and mirrored cocktail bar. Phil Montano still regularly works in the business, which is now run by his son, Marty Montano.

Montano's - Roanoke Ratings and Reviews
We were seated within minutes of our reservation time. Staff are friendly and efficient. They have a very nice wine list. There are many offerings and the prices are very good. We had a lovely bottle from their Interesting Whites list. Food was average. The bread in the bread basket was dried out. It is served with a nice olive oil dipping sauce. I had a shrimp and veal dish that was good but the sautéed vegetables had a musty taste to them. My dining partner had a Brazilian stew with mixed meats and sausages and he liked it. I’d try them again but probably for a more casual entree like one of their subs or sandwiches.
Nice restaurant. Very pricey. The night that we were there it was very noisy Steak was not cooked the way it was ordered. Made reservations and it is set up you wait in line behind the ones that do not have reservations. Should have an area to check in for reservations.
We enjoyed most of our experience at Montanos. We made the reservations on line and had no problems upon arrival to be seated. HOWEVER, we were seated at bar-height chairs/table which was uncomfortable for our older friends to sit for that length of time. AND we were not happy to be seated near the live music because it was hard to talk loud enough to hear. We left without dessert and coffee because of the music. The on-line reservations might consider having specifics about where seated. Not near live music, not on bar-height chairs. BUT, we enjoyed the meal, and the wait staff was thorough and efficient.
We have been to Montano's several time usually for a special occasion (birthday, anniversary, etc.) and have never been disappointed by the food. This time we requested a quiet table for five to celebrate my wife's birthday. We were placed in the middle of the bar and the noise level did not allow for good conversation with our guests. The service which is usually very good was only fair as the waiter kept complaining he was busy working too many tables that evening and judging by wait times for drinks and refills he may have been right. Upon making the reservation and again at our arrival to the restaurant I mentioned we were there that night to celebrate my wife's birthday. This fell on deaf ears as no mention of it was ever made again. I'm sure we will go back for the food, but our overall experience on 12/21/17 did not meet expectations or live up to our past visits.
Had dinner with a group of 4 friends. The noise level in the restaurant was so high I could not hear the dinner conversation. The server seemed overwhelmed. He forgot one friend's salad and another friend's beer. The food was good and served reasonably quickly.
Service was excellent. I had the Tuna with crabmeat. I expected a better piece of fish but it was ok. The tuna also came with a handful of asparagus and a baked potato. The asparagus I expected the baked potato I didn't. I wish I had been given a choice. Next time I will quiz our server on what comes with the main dish.
The bass was, as always, excellent. We were seated slightly ahead of our reservation time; the waitress was very attentive, but erred on my drink order and seemed to not be aware of the accompanying items with entrees. This only slightly diminished the evening. Montano's is a favorite of ours and never fails to brighten our day.
Our family has been meeting at Montano's for our pre-Thanksgiving Day meal, the latest being November 22, 2017. Montano's is always very accommodating and the food never disappoints. We are looking forward to many more meals at Montano's -- not only for special occasions!! Our service is always good and this time Marty came out to speak to us. We shall return.
This is a very popular restaurant that has been open over 40 years. Reservations are a good idea most nights and parking can be an issue. I had blackened Ahi tuna and my guesthouse the shrimp etouffee. Both were excellent. The service was also excellent although we could have used just a little more attention to our drinks. Other attractions: Trivia Tuesday and live music on Thursday and Saturday.
Specials looked really good and my friend enjoyed his steak and shrimp special. Another friend had a beautiful plate of grilled vegetable as her main course. Shrimp FraDiavolo was also good as usual. I enjoyed my chicken Montano but I did not care for the brown sauce with the angel hair pasta. Our server was slammed all
Night but did an excellent job keeping our drinks filled and checking in on us.
A little loud surprisingly but everything else was fantastic. Our server Kelly was very personable, attentive to our tables needs & made this experience even better. Our table of 5 was very pleased with our appetizers & dinner selections. Thank you, happy customers!
The food was good, but not special. Wait staff was good, and appetizers came out ahead like they were suppose to, but the salads came too early. This place is very popular and they were slammed. Pretty good considering the circumstances. I had the burger and fries. They serve ketchup in pre-packaged packets. Unusual for a restaurant of this caliber.
My favorite place to go in Roanoke! The food is always great and the live jazz combined with lots of screens for sports is a real plus. If you don't like those, choose the quieter side of the restaurant. They have more beers than I have ever seen in one place, plus wine and a full bar, and great desserts!
