Absolutely incredible! The service and the food were outstanding. Perfect place for a date night or special occasion.
Interesting and delicious tasting and wine pairing experience
I have been meaning to come here for so long and it just hasn't happened. Went for brunch and it was even better than expected. Already drooling thinking about a return visit.
Excellent neighbourhood eatery in quaint Church Hill, Richmond, serving gourmet German food and wine.
We were charmed by the service, freshly prepared food, and good choice of domestic and German wines and beers. A great addition to the neighbourhood.
Always pleasantly surprised by how good the food is. Great drink selection. Great servers and service.
Amazing food, drinks, and service! Planning on going back very soon.
I travel to Richmond once a year, and I make a point of going to Metzger Bar and Butchery. The food never fails amaze me. We started off with a charcuturie plate (this time only 3 items as our eyes get too big for our stomachs when we look at the appetizers.) I don't remember all that was on it, but the pickled fennel was fabulous. We also had a pate, a cheese, and buntnershincken (kind of like proscuitto). This time I had the whole roasted trout as an entree. It was perfection. The trout was cooked just enough and so tender. My partner had the pork chop on wild rice, also perfection. We had a chocolate mouse type of dessert made with dark chocolate. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. The portions are just right - not to small, not to big. Would absolutely recommend this small, intimate restaurant. I wish I could speak more about the beers, but as I am a wine drinker, I don't really know much.
We enjoyed our meal very much. The menu was an excellent collection of fresh meats and creative sides prepared in a pleasant manner. I had the mette for my main, which was a small plate, and I love raw meat. My companions had the trout and the pork chop. The trout were beautiful, and the pork chop was flavorful and perfectly prepared.
The drinks were great. The food was hit or miss. The service was unacceptable.
Enjoyed the thick bone-in pork chop, seasoned and cooked perfectly. It was a great meal.
A bit chilly and also a little bit noisy when full - you know, how a neighborhood favorite usually is. And, of course, the food and the service and wine selection and cocktails and the just generally welcoming vibe were all top notch. They remain high on our list.
Great food and service.
Always a great meal.
Everything was delicious except the shrimp salad appetizer was kind of bland. Great service, not too crowded, good wine
Everything was amazing -- I wanted to taste the flavors of the charcuterie spread every day and forever. Really my only complaint is that it was FREEZING in there (same with last time I went, too).
One of the best places we've eaten in Richmond. Highly recommend it.
Did the Chef’s Tasting menu with a few cocktails - it was a great way to spend the evening.
Tried to come here during RVA restaurant but I got sick. I'm glad i made it here during Memorial Day weekend for a Sunday brunch.
This place has a lot of character. Bar has wal to wall subway tiles. Funky 70s tiles on the ceiling.
Based on the recommendations, I got the Dutch Baby. Such warm goodness with s creamy sweetness in addition to strawberry and Blueberry. My wife got the chicken schnitzel. Holy cow, the breading was amazing while the chicken was thin and tender. Plus, the bacon was very smoky and well done.
Definitely coming back during dinner.
Food was fantastic. It was unfortunate with a choice of 5 entrees they were out of one at the beginning of the evening, ran out of a beer on tap and replaced it with another and the charcuterie items were a mystery to the server as well as the table until the chef decided what we got. Food is worth it but go with a flexible mindset.
The food and everything was amazing. The only thing that bummed me out was we mentioned that it was a birthday and would have loved to get a candle on our dessert or some mention of it. Will come back but probably not for a celebration.
Appetizers, food, drinks and service is great. I was excited to have a schnitzel. It tasted good but it was basically like fried chicken; not like traditional schnitzel.
Great food, great cocktails and the staff are really nice.
This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city! Our cocktails were carefully constructed and very refreshing. Every dish was plated beautifully, tasted incredible, and was perfectly portioned. The wine selection is unique and tasted wonderful. Perfect evening. Can’t wait to come back!
Our server was very knowledgeable. They had a nice selection of wines.
Haven’t been in a while and boy did we miss you. Food is STILL some of the best around Richmond. From the perfect appetizers to dessert. Just perfect
Food was delicious. Highly recommend. The Improved Mimosa was yummy!
Celebrated Mother’s Day and had a wonderful time
Great service and food was delicious and presented nicely. Will definitely come back!
As good as they are, they continue to get even better.
Visited from out of town and it was a great find. Food was wonderful and service very good. Will return when visiting the Richmond area again. Thank you for a great experience.
This is a great little place - great food as well/ schnitzel is scrumptious! ( wasn’t always, something has changed) appetizers are delicious - downside: small portions + a bit overpriced .
We love Metzgar Bar and Butchery. The atmosphere is great. The food s quite delicious and well prepared. We had the Chicken Schnitzel which was amazing. Appetizers were mussels and a charcuterie and cheese tray. Very good. Desserts were also very tasty. We had a chocolate cake with marshmallow. Everyone loved it. Excellent cocktails. I recommend the one with the jalapeño in it.
We had not been to Metzger in a long time due to a gluten allergy discovery and decided to go for a birthday celebration… I figured I’d do the best I could with gluten.
My husband specifically went for the schnitzel which was delicious as always however it no longer comes with potatoes and sauerkraut which was a bummer… he said, “what German inspired food doesn’t come with potatoes and sauerkraut?” 😊
Those potatoes fried in duck fat were the bomb, they said they didn’t have potatoes right now. We’re not sure if they are seasonal or if the menu has switched to a little more fancy. Either way it was very good but we probably won’t be rushing back. Sadly.
Food was way too salty
We made reservations based on an article identifying the 38 "essential" restaurants in the South and were not disappointed. Located in the Church Hill neighborhood, it has a slightly industrial vibe with a distinctly German-influenced menu. Would that we were beer drinkers, because the offerings looked intriguing. No matter. We gorged ourselves on lightly-breaded stuffed morel mushroom appetizer followed by plump mussels in a bratwurst-infused broth (all kinds of yummy) with rye toast to sop up all the delicious liquid. My companion ordered the chicken schnitzel that was served with an endive slaw that was equally tasty. We also shared a charcuterie plate that starred pickled fennel that we could have eaten a whole bowl of. Kudos on this meal. Great food, German with a Southern twist, and worth the effort.
We had a lovely dinner at Metzger’s - despite the limited menu due to restaurant week everything was thoughtfully prepared & delicious. The cocktails were perfectly in balance and the wine recommended by the bartender Rachel paired well with the lamb & duck mains we selected. Great atmosphere & would highly recommend - we’ll be back!
A perfect evening, we will be back!
Had a wonderful restaurant week experience at Metzger's. Courtney, our server/bar tender was both personable and extremely helpful. The special menu had a wide range of options and I particularly liked the beer-brined pork chops with parsnips. I would also buy the marshmallows that come with the chocolate tart in bulk.
Overall a fun and enjoyable time. I will definitely be going back!
Easter Sunday brunch was fantastic!
Metzger is the epitome of Richmond casual fine dining. Sumptuous flavors and elegant presentations in a relaxed atmosphere attended to by observant and knowledgable but not overly intrusive staff. A hands down favorite!
Always a pleasure! Excellent service, ambiance, and seasonal variety in menu offerings. Forever a fan of the maitake, red wine, and Krystle.
