Merchant is a neighborhood-driven restaurant and craft cocktail bar named to honor the local farmers and purveyors who use age-old methods and produce and sell top ingredients with pride. Merchant seeks to honor the American Craft Movement by exploring our deep local culinary and bartending traditions; sourcing ingredients locally from local purveyors, and creating innovative and inspired dishes and cocktails. Now, after we've reopened our doors in 2020, our mission at Merchant is now broader with a renewed consciousness to treat each other and ourselves well, and position our business not only around the craft of cooking and bartending, but employing Merchant as a driver of social change through civic, cultural, and artistic activism and expression.     Please don’t seat open table reservations at the bar like high top table near the entrance. There were several 7 people parties sitting in the leather booths and plenty of room to seat us there, as well. Also, lose the saltines in the ceviche dish. Finally, lemonade refills for kids (or any refills for kids) is needed- tiny serving, mostly ice and you have no refills??

    We really enjoyed our “date-night” at Merchant! Excellent food, beverages and atmosphere. Service was attentive and responsive! Our server Austin was great!

    Lovely, casual place for dinner. Food was good. Cheese curds were delicious. So was the carrot cake and apple crumble. One hangar steak was a little tough, the butternut risotto was good. Shrimp ceviche was just ok. Would go back, but didn't love it.

    Very limited entree list. Merchant Burgers were excellent but only came with potato chips. Draft beer selection is surprisingly poor. Friend loved his Old Fashioneds.

    If you’re willing to venture outside the box of typical brunch menus, skip the line at Marigold and enjoy an amazing experience at Merchant. The atmosphere is upscale, menu is creative and customers waiting for a table won’t be hovering over you.

    Server was great, brunch not so much. $4 for one slice toast was pretty sad. Asked for jam and they only had tasteless apricot. No coffee available except for cold brew. Other similar issues just didn’t make for a great experience.

    Started with white fish spread which was very good and Bibb salad which was big but very simple. Entrees we’re excellent- fried white fish great, steak frites cooked perfectly and chorizo well done. Drinks good too. Cool atmosphere, waiter nice but not much personality. Would definitely recommend.

    Very nice restaurant in downtown Madison. We arrived 10 minutes before our reservation at 6. Happy hour ended at 6 and our waiter made sure we were aware, so we ordered our drinks and the apps right away. It was just nice to not have to asked if it was ok since our meal and extra drinks would not be happy hour. 🤩

    Small menu which usually means they do those few items extremely well. Not the case at Merchant. My steak was tender but extremely underseasoned.. and when the only side was fries, it felt pretty disappointing. Would not go back. Cocktails are very small for the price. Only plus is that service was quick.

    Surprisingly this was a terrible experience at Merchant - so unlike any other visit. I didn’t realize when I booked months ago that I had booked an outside table 7;15pm. With the weather as it was, I would think the restaurant would have made a change or contacted me. There are no heaters and there were no other customers eating outside on the patio. When we arrived 7pm we were told that we were out of luck… oh well… your problem. When asked what we can do, after some effort we were told we could be accommodated in an hour and a half 8:30. We returned an hour later 8pm and all of the tables that were empty prior were still empty! Literally no party sat at some for an hour and a half, some were empty all night! I guess the staff does not understand turning tables during the night is how the restaurant makes money. On top of that the rude attitude I got when we returned was so unacceptable. By the time we sat down to order, 8:45, we were so annoyed and frustrated that we didn’t want appetizers drinks or dessert - just ate mediocre burgers and got out of there. I’m sure not a huge issue for you, but we won’t be returning. All so poorly handled.

    The service was awful. We had to ask for water, then we had to ask for silverware, then we had to ask for napkins. The "SHAKSHUKA EGGS BENEDICT roasted red peppers, harissa & tomato sauce" was anything but an eggs benedict, while the chicken sandwich and avocado toast were very good. We appreciated the helpfulness of the hostess. I have been here once before, at which time our experience was excellent. This recent visit was quite different, unfortunately.

    I brought four friends from out of town to Merchant for lunch on Saturday. One of the ladies in our party has several dietary restrictions. The waiter was very helpful and provided some options that worked for her. We all enjoyed our meals!

    We dined at Merchant on Tuesday so we could take advantage of their Date Night offering. The ambiance and dishes paired very well together. I noticed how light the music was and that created a more enjoyable atmosphere rather than loud music with people talking over it. I can appreciate a restaurant who includes thoughtfully prepared vegetarian dishes rather than ones without creativity and flavor. I can say that Merchant Madison delivered this to me and for that, I can guarantee I will return. Oh yeah, and the husband will too. P.S. thanks for a great night, Emma!

    Grant was so nice! And our hostess (did not catch her name) was so accommodating to our needs. The food was great. I had the farmers market omelette and the sweet corn fondue. Will be back to try the shakshuka omelette!

    Our food was very good, particularly the broccoli. The server was on top of everything and very friendly. The vibe was was good. The drinks we had were also very good. My husband had an old fashioned that was very good. I did a Japanese whiskey and cucumber that was excellent.

    We really felt the love from our waitress!! What a special night… Personally we’ve had a very difficult summer with some significant health scares. We were dining out tonight to celebrate the successes and milestones moving forward!!! Our waitress inquired if we were celebrating anything and literally spent time hearing our story and asking us questions. She made us feel loved and heard and never rushed us. We spent a little over 2 hours ordering multiple courses to share and pairing them with great wines…. It was a beautiful evening and a wonderful experience!! Thank you for everything including the complimentary “celebration carrot cake!” Merchant remains one of our favorite places to dine in Madison. 🥰

    Very reasonable prices for great food and amazing service. Our server, Sam, was very knowledgeable and super friendly! Our only complaint was the noise level. It was hard to have a conversation without talking very loudly and my ears were ringing after we walked out, even with the big garage doors open. Just too many hard surfaces. Cocktails were very creative and delicious. We would definitely go back, but sit outside to avoid the loud environment.
