Had a dinner party of 12. Everyone enjoyed their food. The waiter was very knowledgeable and was able to provide fantastic beverage selections for everyone in the group.
I would not recommend this restaurant. We love the restaurant in the fan but did not have a pleasant experience at Regency. Slow to get drinks and food and our server seemed inconvenienced by our group of 12. We went on a Friday night and the restaurant was empty.
The food was really good and I would go back again. We tried 4 of their appetizers and the BBQ. The collard greens as with the first visit had a little too much vinegar. They are good but I do like the taste of the greens and not so much vinegar. The Mac & Cheese was really good as well as the cornbread.
I hope that the locals start frequently this location not only for the food but also for the laid back atmosphere that it provides.
McCormack's Big Whiskey Bar has a very nice bar and nice place to go for a drink...great whiskey selection. Food was mediocore.
Great, hidden gem! Perfect for the large group we had. We will definitely go back.
Excellent food and drink!
Food was bland, service was excellent
The prefix meal was okay for Valentine's Day. I would not return again for a prefix meal. I might try it regularly though. The rest of the menu looked okay. First time I ever ate there.
After enjoying a visit to the McCormack's on Robinson and after hearing good reports from friends at an event at the Regency location, we arranged to meet a group of friends at the Big Whisky.
The food is fabulous, from the vegan BBQ to the bronzino - inventive, well-done, and good value. The drink list is extensive. The interior is well-finished; although the location is questionable (cheap, I guess?).
The service, as mentioned in other reviews, was really not good. Our server was well-intentioned, I believe. But not equipped for a party of 10, even though we made up about half of the number of patrons in the whole (large!) restaurant for the evening.
These days, nothing else will bring me to Regency so the experience needs to be pretty great to make me want to come back. And I just don't feel we got that. (Although there were menu items that I would still like to try!)
Food was just short of ok. The bbq sauce tasted like burnt garlic. The waiter made a point to say they have over 2,000 bottles of liquor, but they don't offer flight options. Waiter stopped by once after our food came out after 15 minutes. At this point I had already walked over to a waiter just standing around to get what we needed.
This was our first visit to this location. The waiter offered great bourbon selections. We had the shrimp and scallop appetizer. It tasted great. We had heard the burgers were good so we tried them. Nice sized portions and they were cooked to perfection. Outstanding service and food. We will return for another visit.
We ordered appetizers, oysters and artichoke/bacon dip. The oysters were cold and flavorless. The dip was creamy and warm. On this evening they had limited menu of 6 or 7 items. We ordered the speciality meatloaf only to find out they were out of it. Seemed a bit unusual considering they had very few customers. The duck and scampi were wonderful with exception they were served cold. We also had to order Prime Rib in sub for the meatloaf. Prime rib was a nice size but loaded with grizzle.
Service was good but you need to plan on being there a long time. Slow slow slow.
Overall was an ok experience but will not have a repeat visit.
Would recommend for anyone that enjoys good food a bourbon.
Had great food and superb service. Thanks to Ryan. Very knowledgeable regarding the liquors offered.
The proprietor is outstanding in knowledge, experience, and character. This is not the place to go in a hurry. Our food and drinks were delivered promptly and perfectly prepared, but as things picked up with the dinner crowd, the owner's unique one-on-one interaction with each table delayed our exit a bit, and prevented us from ordering additional drinks or dessert, as our little one was reaching her tipping point. Overall, everything we tasted was 100% worth the wait and more.
Go here to savor the variety of fine items and enjoy the company of your companions, but not for a quick meal. We will be back!
We enjoyed the chicken livers, po boy and meatloaf sandwiches. The food was very good.
My mom and brother and I were really excited about trying this restaurant. They're not in town often so we don't get together to go out to eat very often. When we do, picking a restaurant is always hard—Richmond has so many choices! I had heard really good things about McCormack's Big Whiskey Grill so we decided to give it a shot. The experience was just OK. My mom ordered a cocktail and I ordered a cider. The drink ticket time was about 20 minutes. We ordered three entrees and our food ticket time was about an hour. There was a HUGE party, so I'm sure that's what slowed everything down.
The worst part was that our server was terrible. She was pleasant, but we got the sense that our table was an inconvenience and she was trying to rush us through our meal to get rid of us. We actually had to ask if we could have dessert (the main reason we picked this restaurant) because she never offered. We got the sense that she didn't want us to have dessert because she wanted us to leave. She took our appetizer and my dessert before we were finished. She tried to take my brother's plate before he was finished, but we stopped her.
Having said all of that, the food was good. I got the steak with mushrooms. It was a little boring and lackluster—and sadly overcooked by two temperatures. My brother got the low country boil and said it was delicious. The greens that came with my mom's ribs were spectacular. If you go, order the greens! I would be willing to try it again, but would hope to have a better experience.
Really good food. Definitely great liquor selection. Surprising noise level.
With such a good bourbon selection, I was expecting a good selection of mixed drinks as well; they had no specialty drink menu. We went on a slow night, and the service was very slow. The food was good but more effort should be made to make the overall experience really enjoyable.
Server was nice but food was mediocre at best. Chicken was greasy and appetizers were average.
The restaurant is really too big for itself. While there seemed to be enough wait staff for the number of customers we were really spread out. This resulted in sporadic service. Luke warm food, and the entrees arriving about 5 min after the apps. The food was good but not great. We've seen this genre, new southern, done better elsewhere. That being said, the fried oysters were quite good.
An awesome locally owned restaurant that truly seems to care about its patrons! Not a national or regional chain with no local ties. Food was fantastic, especially the Pork Chops. We had a group of 8 we were promptly seated. Service was just right, very friendly and receptive but not overbearing.
In addition to an outstanding entree and dessert menu, they have a great selection of Whisky, Wine and Beer.
This restaurant is large enough that it is great for families and/or work groups as there is ample space to spread out. They have a large bar as well.
The owner has completely remodeled the old Texas De Brazil space at Regency Square Shopping Center.
Give it a try! I think you will be back.
We have been hoping for years that a really great restaurant would breathe some life into Regency Square! So happy to have found this place! Great meal! Unbelievable bar!! Best grits this southern girl has ever tasted! Can't wait to go back!
McCormack's Big Whisky is a Richmond restaurant not to miss!
Food is phenomenal, whisky/bourbon list is amazing and the feel of the restaurant is authentic and welcoming. With tables made by hand (from 100+ year old wood), bourbon barrel bar tables with hand crafted bases and a very warm, welcoming feel- this restaurant is perfect for any size group.
The food is delicious, haven't had anything there yet that I didn't love (and I'm fairly critical when it comes to food, when I say love, I mean LOVE!). 1/2 bbq chicken is awesome, shrimp bacon and artichoke dip is creamy and delicious, Nashville hot chicken is one of the best in Richmond, pulled chicken bbq is perfect, kale salad was great, pierogies were very satisfying.
There is something for everyone here- vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, die hard meat eaters- and it's all cooked well with lots of attention to detail. Locally, sustainably sourced food, with heavy attention to antibiotic free meats.
Give this restaurant the chance to become your new favorite.
Extensive collection of whiskies, gin, vodka and tequila. Very knowledgeable and friendly owner behind the bar. Food was great.
The restaurant is beautiful and smaller rooms are available for private gatherings. Our waiter, Ryan and the owner/bartender Mac, were very accommodating and friendly. We are from KY so discussions about their vast bourbon and whiskey selections were enjoyed with Mac. He is very knowledgeable. We had the fried oyster appetizer, and fried chicken and grilled pork chop entrees. It was all delicious. We are looking forward to dining there again with friends!
Selection of whiskeys is vast which you would expect, however they also have a good selection of most other spirits such as gins, tequilas, etc.
The food is equally as good. While the menu is not as vast as the spirits, I've got to believe that everything on it is very good. Had the fried chicken livers, not sure what the chef does, but even if you're marginal on chicken liver, I'm sure that you'll like these. Also, the pork belly dish was very good as was the entries that we also had, duck and meatloaf. Ok so you're probably thinking meatloaf? Me too, but with ingredients such as bison, Andouille and Chorizo how can you go wrong. It was moist and most excellent.
Found the bartenders and chef very passionate about the food and drink that they served.
Big Whiskey provides wonderful new American cusine in an old Brazilian steak house. Although the food is yummy the draw is the over 500 bottles of liquor that one can sample. Amazing!
We had a mothers day lunch...service was not good...was never asked if we wanted 2nd drinks, water filled maybe once. Our food took forever, and the waiter was MIA for about 20 minutes. Maybe they were understaffed...they didn't seem to notice that they were providing awful service. The decor is really cool, and out food was pretty good, but we all left hungry. No offer of dessert, there were none on the very limited menu. This place doesn't stand a chance in richmond with all the awesome restaurant choices.
What a find!
We came for the southern style food and found a great beer. Loved the decor and ambiance, menu was very interesting . We had scallops and fried green beans then their signature meatloaf. The meatloaf had a perfect mild spicy bite . Highly recommend this gem .
We found it tough to find not being from the area but the directed us in on the phone and it was well worth it. Duck Scotch Egg and Pork Belly Confit with Buckwheat waffle to die for. Followed by Pork shank...crispy with the cracklin' fat/skin (So very hard to find but very British) so a real treat for us immigrants, and the Catfish served with my two favorites...roasted brussels and bacon succotash.
Staff was beyond friendly. Although we are not scotch drinkers....the bar has a over 400 different scotch
