Just the best mix of tradition and innovation with an incredible sake list!
Sat at the bar. The bartender was great as were the food and drinks. Cool place to have dinner.
Love this place but service this time was slow and spotty.
Wonderful service, some items were excellent (fried rice, Lotus roll) others were just ok. Portions were SMALL for the price and we frequently visit high end restaurants.
Maybe my favorite Sushi Restaurant in Portland. It is the place I go back to the most. There is a nice mix of fresh options. Still love the unagi. And the Japonica warm but not over the top. Waitress this visit patiently reviewed all the specials., and it was full house. There must have been 20 hand written fish options.
Great food. Great service. Nice ambience. A bit pricey maybe?
Few diners for lunch and only one server. The server was pleasant and tried her best but it was too much for one person.
Long delay for hot tea. When it arrived it was nothing more than hot water with leftover tea leaves from another time. The hot water/tea cost $3 per person.
Sushi was well presented but lacking overall taste and freshness. The kale salad was a disappointment in terms of visual appeal and flavor. For what we paid, wanted the whole experience to be so much more but it just never happened.
Excellent dinner sitting at the sushi counter - delicious sushi, nice chat with sushi chef, romantic ambience. Highly recommend!
Awesome Sushi. Sushi bar is the place to be!
Great rolls and very good, efficient service easily makes this my top sushi restaurant in Portland! The Nemo roll is an extraordinary blend of flavors, and is probably both mine, and my wife's favorite all time roll. Try it out next time you are there!!!!
Great place! Had a first date there and they were very accommodating, but did a great job of giving us space to have conversation. The food was outstanding along with the service and the atmosphere. We will definitely be back in the future.
Amazing food, great location, friendly staff all with a terrific ambiance.
The service from the waiter was horrible. Took forever for her to take outlet drink order and even longer to bring it. I was halfway done with my meal before I got my wine.
We had our first date here and every year we always come back for our anniversary and sometimes a date night
Best Hokkaido scallops outside of Hokkaido, and I should know having lived there for two years.
Excellent service. Ate at the counter solo and did not feel rushed. Sushi is very fresh. I had several rolls and they were all very good. It was a little noisy but I think that was because there were several very large groups in the room and they were loud.
The sushi (nigiri) was wonderful. We sat at the counter. Friendly sushi chefs. We saw our server once for a drink order. Flagged someone down eventually for our tab.
Lunch date and it was splendid. Happened to be Halloween, kudos to mgmt to allowing staff to not ignore the fact that it is Halloween and great choice of our server to not over do it. The food , experience and ambiance were great and the service was top-notch. Our black kitty server was knowledgeable, friendly and polite. We’ll be back!! Happy to recommend!
This is one of my go-to spots when I’m in Portland. I find the food so fresh and just fantastic, the service top notch and the room quite beautiful (on the second floor with a nice view of the trees).
Nico and Carlos were wonderful. Carlos is so gifted as a chef and artist. We were not expecting such great presentation. Their hospitality and kindness was a real blessing.
We were very rushed- waitperson would not back off. Ridiculous.
Overall great evening with friends! Thanks!
Wonderful quality, beautiful presentation, amazing umami
Really delightful sushi. Sit at the counter, get to know the chefs, and they’ll prepare really special things.
great quick service and friendly staff. food was great.
I love sushi and have had it at many places throughout Portland. But Masu consistently delivers the overall best experience: food, service and ambiance.
Our food was good to great. The server was very nice and moderately attentive. Perhaps they were understaffed? Two of our party got their food after a longer than ideal wait, but the third in our party waited for an hour for their food. Sat down at 740, wasn't eating until almost 945, after the others at the table were finished with their dinners.
I am sad to say that Masu sushi did not live up to the ratings and the hype. Everyone on OpenTable, Yelp and Google reviews gives this place 4 stars and I can barely find a reason to give it one star. We sat at the sushi bar and our server was quite rude when we sat down. I asked for an iced tea and she rudely replied, “We don’t have iced tea. We have hot green tea or lemonade if you want”. It wasn’t so much what she said but how she said it. Our sushi chef, Alex, was great, and probably the best part of this dining experience. He offered recommendations and chatted with us about sake and the fish available for the evening.
We started out with half dozen oysters and this was the only edible item we ordered. After that we moved on to 4 orders of different nigiri and a roll, none of which tasted fresh. It was all kind of luke warm and gave us the feeling that it could be going bad. Overall, Masu did not stand up to the reviews it’s received and we will not be going back for fear of getting sick from not so fresh fish. So sad because we were really looking forward to our special sushi date night.
Masu is one of those places that is almost too hip to be enjoyable for the likes of me, almost... but it stays on the reasonable line of the 'Portlandia' mythos and is a pleasant place.
Where they nail things is in quality fish. Too often I end up in places with super-fancy rolls, and all sorts of gimmicks. At some places it seems like the freshest thing behind the bar is the butane in the torch that the chef has to wave across everything. But not at Masu. At Masu there is someone in the kitchen that knows fish and presents quality.
When the goal is good fish, Masu scores.
Everything was good except hot water smelled and tasted like chemical or chlorine...
Wonderful service delivered by Carly and Abbie. The food was beautifully presented and excellent. We will be back
Masu is our go-to sushi place. Great every time. Recommend it.
We’re regulars and think that this is the best and most sophisticated sushi restaurant in Portland.
I was out of town for work in Portland. The food was fresh and delicious. The three of us shared 6 rolls and the Mackerel. It was a bit too much food but it was delicious. The Miso soup is a bit too salty but it has a flavor similar to Udon that keeps you drinking. The Death by Sushi was my favorite roll with its creamy warm taste. One ordered the Day Boat (albacore tuna) from the specials list which was excellent. If you like spicy don’t skip the Japanista.
Great service, cool spot for a date, sushi was really good but not the best I’ve had. Still would recommend Masu after hitting up the local breweries!
The fish was fresh but the service could use a pick me up.
Highly recommend. The establishment is upstairs off the street. Nice ambiance. Service was quick. Fish was fresh and a good selection. Will be back.
It was good.
We love Masu. Probably the best sushi in Portland!!
