Massa's South Coast Grill is an excellent restaurant. The food and the service are both very good. This is a good choice when dining in downtown Houston.
So sad to know it’s closing
We had a sales meeting and stayed downtown, so I wanted to try something that was not a chain restaurant. There were 8 of us so we tried a lot of different dishes (steak, redfish, burger, shrimp and grits and redfish pontchartrain. We had the bacon wrapped quail appetizer that was awesome. We also had the calamari (it was average). The drinks were good. Our waiter was Mario and he was very attentative and was right there if we needed anything.
We had five in our group. Everyone was happy with their meal choices. The jalapeño cheese muffins they serve before the meal were delicious. I especially loved the crab bisque soup, it had large chunks of sweet crab meat! My entree was bacon wrapped shrimp with a crab meat stuffing, gratin potatoes and mixed vegetables. All in all it was a very good meal and we all enjoyed the fact that we could hold a conversation without yelling at each other. Restaurants close to the convention center downtown Houston can be overcrowded and noise levels can be ear splittingly loud so we were pleased to find this little gem of a restaurant. We will definitely dine at this location again.
Food was excellently prepared and beautifully served. Quiet atmosphere with first rate service.
Usually Massa's is wonderful. Tonight the fish was on the dry side and the coconut pie was inedible. The crab cakes were ok the pecan encrusted trout was excellent.
Great food and service
Overall dining experience ok. Salmon was tasty, mahi-mahi well prepared.
Food tasted great, House salad looked great on menu but not in person, Shrimp looked like it was out of a can and salad greens needed to be patted dried or spun dried ( water/ dressing ) conflict. Owner/ Manager was quick to correct.
Seeing Concert, easy to walk to restaurant ( JW Marriott Downtown) to concert venue (Minute Maid Park)
Waiter was nice but kept forgetting things, Bread, Salads, ordered a meal that was no longer available (but was not told) Could have been new so hopefully he gets better
Would go again!
Our waiter was outstanding. I didn’t love the cocktail menu...but they would do pretty much what you wanted. I asked for a jalapeño margarita and it was awesome! They subbed sides and were nice about it. I thought the sautéed spinach was incredible. My grouper was really nice too. We were there on a Monday evening so it was pretty empty. We had a nice time though!
Great food and swrvicw
Great waiter. Great food recommendations. Delicious food/service. We will return again.
White table cloths, quite, not too many tables. My wife and I went for an early dinner after a 1:00 Astros game. The waiter was very nice. We ordered seafood gumbo and bread to start. Main course was shrimp and grits. All was excellent. Then we went for the desert. My wife got pecan pie with ice cream and I got the bread pudding. OMG the bread pudding was to die far. The owner came out when we were done and thanks us for coming. We enjoyed talking to him. When we left , we felt like we had made friends. We are definitely going back.
Went for restaurant weeks. Delicious food, especially the quail appetizer. Generous and delicious cocktails, excellent waiter and friendly owners who visited with us after our meal and gave us a sample of their special spice rub as we left.
We had the Restaurant Week Prix Fixe menu EVERYTHING was delicious. Blueberry Lemondrop was great. on my new favorites list
We found Massa's for a dinner before our concert. Our waiter, who was trying really hard, was spread across the entire restaurant. He had tables on opposite sides of the restaurant. Very poor planning by management! Next, they brought the wrong drink to my sister in law. When they brought the next one, it wasn't a Moscato, which she ordered. In fact, it wasn't sweet at all. Next, my wife ordered a meal with mashed potatoes. They were stone cold. My pasta dish was very good, as was my Cabernet (oh, they didn't have Don Julio for a margarita!). It was a tough night them, obviously.
Two friends and I celebrate birthdays together by going to restaurants around Houston. Massa''s South Coast Grill is where we went on a Saturday night downtown. The service was excellent and the menu filled with delightful chooses. All the food that came to our table was eaten vigorously! Calamari appetizers, Grilled Shrimp & Grits, Pecan Crusted Trout, warm bread and cheesecake for the birthday girl and the portions are very generous and delicious.
Can't say enough about the professional staff and the owner came by to see how we were. Will go back again. 1331 Lamar across from the Four Season's. Check it out!
Easy to book, great service, food was yummy, pleasant staff and owner involvement in quality assurance.
Welcomed relaxed dining experience.
Was greeted with a smile, and our server also had a little bit with the hostess that we were the one listed for the reservation. We were escorted to our table, and given a beverage menu as well as regular menu. Jason was also working a few other tables, like a master, often "sensing" when he was needed and rarely requested. We ordered the Corn Bisque and Gumbo......being in Houston the Gumbo was good............but the corn and crab bisque was outstanding........... for our main dish we ordered catfish and shrimp platter and also shrimp and grits.........once again the fried platter of catfish and shrimp were good, but that is normal for this town.........The shrimp and grits were the best ever tasted, and I am talking multiple states and a few other countries........ We had eaten here maybe 10 years ago on Valentine's day, but it was a prefix menu, so I remembered more the occasion than the food. So happy we returned.
Good service. Food was plentiful and tasty. Good value for the money. Loved the validated parking.
I absolutely love this restaurant every time I dine there. This occasion was an impromptu lunch for 6 of my friends in town for a conference. They enjoyed their lunch selections as well as the wine selected for us.
I met a business prospect for lunch at Massa's because of its central location in DT Houston. Turns out my guest is a regular at this restaurant and the owner stopped by to say hello. I felt obligated to share that the Mahi Mahi I ordered was outstanding and that I had just returned from a trip to Cancun where I had caught Mahi Mahi which the resort prepare for our dinner. And, when comparing the freshness and flavor of the fish, Massa's portion, freshness and flavor was equal and perhaps even better than my own fresh caught meal. I will definitely return and probably will re-order the same meal again.
Fantastic food and service. Parking was easy and the restaurant is surrounded by the fun of downtown Houston.
Gee, I really have misgivings about giving Masa's my highest rating --- I don't want the secret to get out!!!
Fundamentally, this is a GREAT FOOD restaurant. These folk really know how to prepare food, the taste is wonderful. The service is attentive. We just LOVE THIS PLACE.
We visit Masa's EVERYTIME we are in Houston!!!!
Always fresh Gulf fish - really outstanding.
The service was great but the food was meh. The service was great but the food was meh.
The food was decent, didnt exactly knock my socks off. The restaurant was virtually empty, not sure why, but it had us wondering why we made reservations and if we made the right decision.
Excellent food and service. Very consistent quality. Always a great experience.
This is a great place and the best part is that it is family owned. You're greeted by family and treated like family.
Food was amazing, service was great. Overall wonderful dining experience.
This place was nice, the service was good and the food was great. The portions are well worth the price and I left full. It took about 10 minutes for the food to arrive once we ordered.
Lovely restaurant, attentive but unobtrusive service, delicious food.
Nice people, but the food is dated. However, the location is good
Nice decor. Waiter was brisk, but servers were very friendly. My daughter had the crab stuffed, bacon wrapped shrimp with au gratin potatoes an veg - she said it was good. I had the shrimp and grits. Shrimp was overcooked and dry. Grits had very little taste and spicy creole sauce tasted pretty much like ketchup. Convenient to walk to Toyota Center, but would not go to this restaurant again.
Not very goid
Smoked corn and crab bisque was excellent! Shrimp and grits-the grits were creamy and one of the best plates on the table. The bacon wrapped stuffed shrimp was very dry. Overall a nice meal before our concert.
This place never disappoints! They have the best seafood offerings of any place downtown. The quiet and calm atmosphere is perfect for an enjoyable night out.
Great shrimp and grits
Another great meal at Massa’s. We had never eaten their calamari and were surprised by how good it was. It was very crisp with a light batter. It had a sweet, hot chili sauce with it that really brought out the flavor. We will put this dish on our favorites list. The shrimp appetizer was also good...but not as memorable.
The main entrees were both well-prepared fish dishes. My wife’s seafood pasta is already on her favorites list and didn’t disappoint. I had the fish special, a red snapper with a spicy topping of seafood and olives. My fish was outstandingly fresh and moist.
We went with another couple and they both also enjoyed their meals. They were surprised by how reasonable the check was for such great seafood.
That is why we keep going back...fresh, tasty seafood at a reasonable price.
The food and service are always good here. And I am pleased that you brought back my favorite lunch meal, the salmon with spinach and mashed sweet potatoes!
As always the food and service were excellent. Good food, close to work and reasonably priced.
