Marx Bros Cafe
Excellent as always
Good food. Good friends. Good service. Best wine. Had a pleasant time. I will be back.
Everything was wonderful! Such a great experience and the food was amazing.
Finally able to eat dinner without the kids. The food was great. The only thing is the chair had a nail sticking out in the upholstery and snagged my wife’s leggings.
Without a doubt the best food in Anchorage. Never disappointed from appetizers to desert. I didn't ask our waitress because very few restaurants in town have non-alcoholic wine. If Marx Bros has NA wine available that great. There are only a few out there, Arial and Free.
Very nice Mardi Gras meal. Thoroughly enjoyed the red snapper.
Always stellar- we love dining here! Looking forward to our next eating experience at Marx Bros!
My wife and I have been coming to MarxBrothers for more than 35 years (like hundreds of other Alaskans, we had our engagement dinner here!), and it never disappoints. Unlike other famous places that USED TO BE good, and then something happened to make them a disappointment, Marx Brothers continues to be the BEST RESTAURANT in Alaska. Staff, servers, food quality, ambiance (we sat next to a cozy fireplace), Marx Brother has it all. Cheap? God, no. But NOT excessively expensive either. Come here for any adult special occasion. (Please don’t bring small noisy children). And yes, you can dress for dinner if you want. Classy place!
It's always a good night at the Marx Bros. I enjoy their special dinners -- those drive me into the restaurant for something special, themed often around great seafood they bring in -- but, whether a themed dinner, or just a nice Saturday night: good people, good service, good food, good wine.
Great food and service.
This is one of the top restaurants in Alaska and never disappoints
Great food and service, great place for a special meal.
Quality of food and presentation always outstanding. Intimate atmosphere with attentive service. Our #1 choice for dining in Anchorage.
We were disappointed with our experience. We've been going to Marx Brothers for many years on special occasions. My wife, who must eat gluten-free, called two days in advance and asked about the fixed price menu (which was a special because of the Broadway Show playing). She also informed the server on arrival. Unfortunately, 2 out of the courses served had to be taken back to the kitchen because both had gluten in them. And when the main course finally returned (the fillet) it had no sauce. So she was very disappointed.
My meal (basically the same courses) was very good from start to finish.
The service was not what we came to expect from Marx Brothers, mainly because we had several people serving us instead of one person, and that's where the communication with the kitchen fell apart.
However, Van saved the evening by offering us a free glass of 10-year-old port that helped my wife forget about the mix-ups with the kitchen.
This is the finest restaurant in Alaska. They always have great menu items and tremendous service. Van and Jack are very personable and pleasant to visit with. These owners really do appreciate us eating at their fine establishment.
The food matched the service (and wine)! Perfect.
Great food, as always. Brand new staff takes some patience but they’re learning!
Very nice multi course menu for Valentine’s Day. Every course was unique and delicious. As usual service was excellent.
Great food. The scallops were wonderful and fresh. The shrimp were also excellent. My wife raved about the lobster bisque. Always get the Caesar's salad- it is the best.
I had made my reservation a week or so in advance and requested a fireside table to celebrate our 28th anniversary. Upon arrival at the time for our reservation, we were told fireside was not available but we could wait for one to be available, or be seated at another table which we agreed to. The table was tucked into a corner beside the kitchen, noise level was quite loud, and the table was long and narrow which made table conversation nearly impossible. Food was good, service was okay, but I was quite disappointed that I was not able to celebrate our occasion as I had anticipated. What is the point of including special events/special requests when making reservations if these are the results?
Thank you for your comments Unfortunately while we try to honor requests for certain tables due to the size of the restaurant we cannot guarantee a specific table. I apologize for any inconvenience
As always, superb. A bit noisy, as always. Could use acoustic tile and drapes, but oh well.
Upscale, Alaska style. Enjoyed the Ivory King Salmon. What a nice treat.
Everything was delicious. I’ve never eaten a steak I could cut with a butter knife. The service was wonderful. Would recommend!
Marx Bros never fails to deliver an exceptional experience. I bought my dad here to celebrate his 70th birthday, and he and Van chatted about old Anchorage while Van prepared the salad at table-side. It was completely charming. And that's not even mentioning the always-outstanding food. And comprehensive wine list. And superior service. And historic location.
Everything was excellent except that attention to our needs was not up to the usual standard. For example, we ordered a bottle of white win that was kept on ice away from the table and we had to ask for our glasses to be refilled twice. In the past servers have always stayed on top of that. Likewise, we ordered Caesar Salad and after the cart was wheeled away expected to be offered fresj ground pepper which did not happen and we had to request it. These are not major issues, of course, but we had come to expect better.
We sincerely apologize that service was not up to our usual standards. We have had some turnover on our wait staff and we are working hard to train the new people. thank you for your comments and I have made sure that everyone has read your comments.
very limited menu for non-meat eating people. Filled out special request comments in Open Table concerning my wifes restricted diet that restaurant did not read prior to arriving.
Shrimp and scallops-excellent. Elk also excellent. As always attentive service.
It’s always a great experience. Service is amazing and you feel completely taken care of.
I love that the owners are part of the experience as well. You can tell everyone that works there enjoys what they do and want you to have a great time. And, of course the food is always top notch!
Outstanding as usual. The best Caesar salad. Love the intimate atmosphere, only it can be a little loud. Great, attentive service. Excellent steaks and Elk for dinner. A little spendy, but worth it for a special dinner. Definitely a safe choice.
Fabulous food! Love the table side Caesar and melt in your mouth steak. Staff were exceptional and friendly. I also love the fact that you consistently see the owner walking around, interacting with customers & making the Caesar salad. This is our new special occasion spot hands down.
My wife and I have been patrons since their inception 40 years ago and try to attend every anniversary. Aside the fine menu, extensive wine list, quiet and peaceful ambiance, it is the personal involvement with the principals, Jack Amon and Van Hale, that make this a special experience. The table-side Ceasar salad is essentially food as theatre. There is no finer place in Anchorage to dine for a special occasion.
Wonderful Anniversary dinner! Van was very helpful in cherry picking a couple bottles from the extensive wine list and preparing his legendary Caesar salad. I had one of the best New York steaks I have ever had and my wife had the fresh southeast Alaskan King Salmon prepared perfectly! Definitely a food and wine connoisseurs paradise and a special place for celebrations.
Always awesome at Marx Bros.
This restaurant continues to be one of the best,if not the best, in Anchorage.
The food is outstanding and the service excellent. Take the time to enjoy the food and a bottle wine from the from the outstanding wine list.
As always, great!
White king salmon filet was excellent. Service always great. Already booked for New Year’s Eve.
By far the best service we have had in Anchorage. Well worth the money and to find a babysitter for the kids. A perfect date night restaurant! Five stars all the way!
Stopped in for an early supper. The highlight of our meal was the table Cesar, a must if you are going to eat here. Started eating here in 1982.
