We have been to Market Street Grill, for years. We have season tickets to SHN, the restaurant was close to the Orpheum theatre. On Sat. night we had to wait for our meal 35 minutes. We got our salad immediately , but our entree was very late. Another table was having the same issue. Market Grill was not so busy, we wondered why, this was issue was happening to us, and other tables. We couldn't order dessert, since it was so late, and we had to get to the theater . This was very disappointing.
The Market Street Grill never disappoints. A group of us love to eat here prior to going to the Orpheum for musicals and other events. The menu options are diverse and the meals are tasty. The staff are friendly and provide fantastic service, and if they know that we are going to the theater, we are always accommodated. It is our "go-to" place!
Elegant place near the Orpheum Theater to catch lunch or dinner pre-show.
We were a bit late because of a parking issue we encountered. I called to let them know and they were very nice about it and got us right is when we arrived. We had a show to get to and they got our food delivered quickly and it was wonderful. We always come here when we go to a show. Great and friendly staff!
A sentimental favorite. Always a happy experience, and super convenient to BART and theatres.
Market Grill is in an old hotel that may be, hopefully, in the process of upgrading.
The location is less that a block from the Orphem Theatre. Although the food was good and our waiter very nice, when you first enter the restaurant a very old musty smell comes to your nose. Perhaps changing the carpet would be good. I got used to it, but is not appetizing. There is a lovely fireplace too.
Food and service was excellent.
Good choice for dinner before opera at Orpheum theater in SF.
Great restaurant for pre-theater (across from Orpheum Theater). Limited dinner menu and pricey, but food is excellent. They also have a great food menu ( a little more casual) at the bar.
Fabulous dinner for our family before a show at SHN. The food was delish, especially scallop risotto.
The menu is very limited , so check menu on line prior to going. However, the food and service are excellent and reasonably priced.
Enjoyed a pre theater dinner and it was perfect. Close to Orpheus, excellent service and food.
Location and ambiance make this a good choice despite high prices and so-so food.
Dined at Market Street Grill before attending a show at the Orpheum. Service was fast, food good if not very large portions. Calamari was just ok.
Purchased tickets for Phantom a few weeks back but forgot to make dinner reservations. Went online the day of the performance and found seats available so I took them. Since this was a last minute reservation I was not expecting much but this restaurant really knows how to cater to the pre-theater crowd. Service was fast, maybe too fast but we did have a show to make and the server was actually keeping an eye on the clock for us. At about 30 min before curtain the server came by to make sure we were ok as we were not in any rush. He wanted to make sure we had time for dessert but we do not typically eat dessert.
Food was actually quite good, I had the braised short ribs, caesar salad and a glass of wine!
We encountered a few issues with reserving our table, in that the system, even when refreshed, was offering reservations at times unavailable. It became an annoyance. When attempting to phone the restaurant the phone went unanswered. As for our meal. The short ribs and garlic mashed potatoes were very good, the game hen, dry and lacked flavor, and vegetables were just a bit too al dente for my taste. The service was outstanding, just the right amount of attention. Ambience is quaint. We have been here before and would go again, avoiding the aforementioned game hen. It is very convenient when attending an event at the Orpheum Theatre. It's just across the street.
Good food, good quantity, good value. Yolanda was an excellent waitress, attentive, kind, graceful, and prompt. The Salmon was tops. The Pepper Steak, not so much; a little pricey, relative to the cut. However, the Caesar Salad was outstanding, as well as the Opera dessert. Couldn't get enough!! Very nice location, just half a block from Orpheum Theater!
We enjoyed our table by the fireplace and the food was excellent. Our waitress was very friendly and accommodating.
We had the best time! We didn’t have high expectations thinking we wouldn’t get treated in any special way, but our waiter was fabulous, the food came so quickly, we felt there was great value in the meal, and the over ambience was perfect. Highly recommended!
Food was great. The waitress was very aware we were going to a play, and made sure we got served quickly.
We enjoy this restaurant. One negative was they only offered a bowl of soup, not a cup, for those of us who fill up fast. Also, they don't offer any type of ice cream for those of us who like a light dessert at the end of a big dinner. I had scallops for an entree and they were delicious.
We were seated at a nice table. The wait staff was not as responsive as I would like but she was very nice. She needs to know more about the menu. She will be fine.
My husband and I went here after yelping good restaurants around the Davies Symphony Hall. It's very close in proximity within walking distance and the food was actually excellent! We are both really pleased with what we ordered and the service was good as well. I would definitely go here again! Order the salmon it's yummy and their clam chowder and butternut squash soup is amazing! My husband got the braised short ribs and absolutely loved them. There was nothing left on our plates when we were finished :-)
Had a great time! The goat cheese bruschetta was delicious! I had the scallops risotto which was also delicious however the risotto was not as fully cooked as I would have preferred. The lemon tart I was not impressed with, it looked like it was previously made and out of a box. However the drinks and the service was outstanding! Sol was phenomenal and if we go again I want to be seated at his table! The other bummer was our bill was supposed to be split evenly and it was $53 for one bill and $92 for the other...not equal. Despite these little things we will be back!
Really pleasant staff - good food - historic building!
Elegant place near the Orpheum Theater to catch lunch or dinner pre-show.
The bar wan’t opened , but the waiter was nice to enough to get wine and a bourbon on the rocks . But the food was not good. I think you need a new chef.
Efficient, good food, fun building, friendly staff
The food was delicious as always!!! Enjoyed the salmon. It is very convenient across from the Orpheum so can have dinner before the plays and musicals which I love!
I hesitate to harshly criticize the restaurant when it remains an excellent choice for pre-show dining in a neighborhood where it's difficult to succeed, as a parade or recent closings attest. The food is good. Very well prepared, with more care than you might expect, given other factors.
Primarily, it seems that the management simply doesn't seem to care. I counted two burnt out bulbs in the chandeliers above our table. I noticed a misspelling printed on my food-stained menu ("mussles") and mentioned it to my companion who said it was correct on his. I saw that, indeed, the misspelling was corrected, and the look was slightly different with some font changes. What this meant to me was that they cared enough to fix the spelling, but not enough to replace the incorrect, stained ones. They featured lunch item which misspelled one of San Francisco's most storied mayor's nickname ("Sonny[sic] Jim Burger") for over a decade. (Yes, at one point I *did* mention it to a member of hotel management at a lunch meeting about a function. And anyone with passing knowledge of SF history and the namesake of the burger would immediately recognize the mistake.)
Service was also problematic - but not in the significant areas. Our server was attentive, and given his age, I suspect he had worked there for many years. Our food arrived quickly and warm, and the check was handled correctly. However, I ordered a martini, wet, with an extra olive, up. As ordered, the martini was served up and was not too dry. However it had a twist in addition to two olives. We ordered a starter of fried calamari to share. It was placed in the center of the table, but no individual plates for us and no spoon for the dip. I think the problem here was simply that there was no care by management. Like the stained menu. Things just go on.
Decor. Dated, yet comfy as a family den. I'll still to go there before shows at the Orpheum, and I'm overjoyed that it's not "trendier than thou" It could be so much better.
The staff seemed distracted and kept forgetting things. They were nice but I hate asking for things multiple times. Plus they seemed like they were rushing us out. We were going to the Orpheum Theatre so we wanted something close. I’d pass on it next time.
The food was surprisingly good this time. I had scallops and they were really done well, not rubbery at all. And the coffee after dinner was some of the best I've had in a restaurant lately. We only ate there because we had theater tickets at the Orpheum, but I wou
