   This was a special ocassion so my treat for my son went horribly wrong. We were delayed in arriving and had rang ahead to inform them, however they still seemed put out by this. I specifically asked for a special table for 2 and were placed in an undesirable place which was very cold and draughty and we had to move after the first course. The restaurant was not busy so the level of service was also disappointing, as was the tableware and glassware all rather basic & lacking finesse. Ale house it isn't!! We expected a range of ales as the misleading title "Steak & Alehouse" suggested. Not a single ale in sight in fact all bottled beers ! The Kipper pate starter was pleasant but nothing special with an offering of melba toast insufficient for the portion of pate. We ordered the overly expensive sirloin steak at £27 and unable to eat it , or even cut it, it was so tough. Onion rings looked delicious but failed the taste and crunch test. Triple cooked chips were dry limp and cold. Unfortunately for us I had a tight schedule and tickets for a matinee performance so due to the fact that no waiter had come to check the meal was OK I was then too late to send back the steak and wait for another to be cooked. They were apologetic about the steak and removed it from my bill but missed the fact that I left a restaurant really hungry and still paid £112 for the privilege of a 2 course meal with a bottle of wine and two bottled beers. A truly disappointing expensive experience.

   My husband and I went to this restaurant for our wedding anniversary and although I cannot fault the food as it was perfect, we were disappointed in the service and there was no atmosphere in the restaurant. Our waitress was a little more concerned about waiting on the bigger tables, the predominant noise sounded like a dishwasher being unloaded, some soft music would have been nice! Maybe it would be better with a larger group. It was not an all bad experience, I would go back with friends, just not a place to go for a romantic meal.

   Despite some questionable Christmas songs, I enjoyed the visit to the restaurant. With the 50% off mains, it was reasonable value for two and I would recommend. Attentiveness of the service slipped a bit as the restaurant filled up during lunch, especially by the time we were trying to get the bill, but overall a good option in the city.

   I looked at previous reviews having eaten here several times and have never experienced what the reviews stated. I booked for my mother in laws birthday as a surprise. As usual, the food was superb, waiters attentive and knowledgeable. They were very accommodating with my nine month old an I couldn't fault them including bringing a candle in a desert for the birthday girl. The only minus point was they forgot a couple of drinks at the beginning but these were in addition to others and were quickly bought up when we asked where they were wih an apology. Been here quite a few times on business also and have always found it an excellent experience.

   We really enjoyed our first visit to mpw in Liverpool street. We had a very attentive waiter, cocktails were great, cote de boeuf was delicious. Unfortunately, when we returned last week, the service was terrible. Our waiter was disinterested, the cocktails were too sweet and peppercorn sauce tasted burnt. We will not be going back.

    I had a business lunch and the food was great but it was very stressful as the host, as the service was so slow. In addition, one of the waiters did not know what ale's was on tap....We also told them we where on a time limit and yet we did not get the attention that we required. Some of our guest had to go back and missed out on the desserts..
