“This hip but casual restaurant offers a new take on Mexican food by intertwining a gourmet aesthetic with home style favorites served with sturdy margaritas.”
The Ground Beef & Pickle tacos have been written up nationally as one of the best tacos in Los Angeles and the Burnt Habanero & Crema salsa is a local favorite. Fish tacos, Oaxacan shrimp and the Lobster Diablo are our current favorites from the sea and the Carne Asada and Pork Al Pastor rule the land.

Went for brunch to say farewell. Good final effort, sorry to see this restaurant go.
Malo will forever hold a special place in my heart, but as we walked up for one last meal before they closed for good, there was a notice of closure due to vermin infestation. Bittersweet ending to a great neighborhood gem. Ground Beef and Pickle tacos forever!
Malo unfortunately lived upp to it's name during our visit.
They have fairly reasonable prices on tacos on "taconight" (monday's) which is why we went.
Tacos where OK (once they finally arrived). Service on the other hand was confused at it's best and absent at it's worst. Orders where forgotten, wrong plates came out of the kitchen and the staff wasn't attentive enough.
I wouldn't recommend coming here until they get their staff in order.
Got wrong order, meat for a vegetarian. Slow, bad service. Wouldn’t go back.
Too dark service was ok
Service was slow in every aspect. Food was wrong and came at different times.
Food quality was pretty fair to bad. Downtown does a better job with the food. Good happy hour selection. Nice patio, very good service
After reading all the reviews about poor service and MALO being understaffed during peak meal times we decided to try it for an early dinner. The restaurant was not busy and the food was tasty and well prepared. Portions are nicely sized and their chips and salsa and guacamole are good. A nice choice for Mexican food when you're in the Silverlake area.
The restaurant was nearly empty and not clean. We were seated on the patio since it was dark and smelly inside. Our server displayed odd behaviors. The food was of mediocre quality and a poor value.
We went with our kids. Super friendly and accommodating. Food is always good.
I had not been here in years and had the WORST service I have ever had! My friends were running late and NO ONE approached me at the host stand or while eventually sitting near the entrance for the 15 minutes I waited. We sat ourselves on the patio. No one approached us with menus for 15-20 minutes, there were 3 of us but we're brought 2 waters. Waited another 15 minutes to order. One person in our party ordered a second drink, which they never received. If it had not been Mother's Day and everyplace was packed for brunch, would have left. Spoke with a coworker who was there recently and had the same terrible experience. Why did I need to make a reservation when it was 80% empty!
Food was fantastic and drinks were great! It accommodated all of our diets with vegetarian and vegan options. I’d be raving about this place to all the silver lake pals if it weren’t for the terrible service. Orders mixed up and lack of care. The waitress completely skipped my mother and cousins drink order! We literally had to chase her down inside and give it to her.
When my cousin asked her to bring out my birthday cake, she literally said (her words) “I’m too lazy to cut it”.
This is one of those times where automatic gratuity was a waste. She knew she was getting the tip either way and so did the least amount of work as possible with absolute no shame.
the prices were doubled because it was cinco de mayo. but they were ill prepared for handling the subsequent level of busyness. the quality of the food and service was nonexistent. worst meal i’ve ever had.
The food was good but service was awful. We’ve been here a few times and every time the service is pretty terrible. Unclear who our server was and they never came to check on us. We had to ask 4 people to bring them so we could get another round of drinks.
I go to Malo. A lot. But their brunch was so poorly run. They were out of most things ordered from the menu. But didn’t tell us this until 30 minutes after we ordered. They did comp a round of drinks, which was nice. But we went there for food, and nothing was available. It was even tough ordering coffee because they ran out of milk. What the heck, Malo?
Loved the creative dishes offered and that it was easy to find gluten free items on the menu. We received excellent service. We will definitely go back again.
Don’t bother. Terrible food. Way too loud. Way too expensive.
Our server Romy (Romi?) was the highlight of our experience even though the food and ambiance was also outstanding. She made our visit to Malo so special and even played with my infant daughter! I would return just to sit in her section again. She was the best. Also, the vegan options were amazing!! Try the salsa spread and the chewy chips!
Great spot to meet up with friends before a night out. Their salsa's are incredible and the Oaxacan Shrimp dish had some of the best sauce I've ever had. Service was great, too.
Not enough staff, music in bar area was going on and off and very loud.
Delicious food matched with horrible service. Everyone was seated outside right on top of each other while the waitresses stood inside texting every chance they had. The two would pop out occasionally and look around and head back in. You had to flag a bus boy down in order to get anything.
Such a bummer considering the food was top notch.
Food looked and tasted great, however they were out of multiple options on the menu. Service was poor, was sat without menus, waitress was not around, waited forever to get both the check and to go boxes.
Birthday brunch on the patio, adults with little kids. Yummy Mexican with killer margaritas. Loved the street corn side and my tacos. An abundance of food, friendly service.
One of my gotos
The outdoor protected patio with heating lamps was the scenic option. And though people were there on the outdoor heated patio it was quiet and had a nice ambience and was romantic. The food was excellent and the service was absolutely outstanding. We were able to get parking in this crowded area in the medium size parking lot so that was nice.
Malo is going to be a regular stop for us. Great patio, fantastic service, amazing food. We loved it. We are vegan and they had several fantastic options. Our waiter/waitresses have always been helpful and given great suggestions.
Nothing remarkable. I think a taco truck would be a better value.
During my stay in Southern California, I was craving Mexican food. My friend and I scoured the internet to find something decent or worthwhile to satisfy said desire. We came across Malo, which was easy to make a reservation for (on a Saturday night) and we were seated on the (heated) patio upon arrival. Admittedly, the place is expensive for what they provide. It's really nothing outstanding. I got a Skinny Margarita, their chips and (regular) salsa and the Blasted Half Chicken - which I highly recommend. My friend ordered the Shrimp Diablo, but within two bites, instantly regretted her decision. BEWARE: It's not a plate for the faint of heart! Overall, I'll be eating elsewhere the next time I'm in the area.
Great vibes! Fun, interesting menu items - both in the cocktails as well as food. Really great to see some legit vegan and veggie options as well (vegan menudo?! Didn't order it, but nice to see it on the menu).
Food quality was not good at all. For the prices paid I expect much better.
Great service! From the hostess, bartender and server- all were wonderful and kind. Meal was excellent. Perfect for groups and great patio dinning. Love this place!
I saw a couple of less than stellar reviews so I was guarded. I don't know what they were seeing. The service was great and the food really yummy. There were three of us, a carnivore, a vegetarian and a vegan. There was something for everyone. We all had tacos with a big salad. I will be going back.
Loved it! Thank you! Will definitely be back. Margaritas were perfect, tacos rocked, and the patio was incredible.
This was my first visit since 2012 and the food was definitely not as good as I remember. The guacamole was fine but none of us enjoyed our entrees, especially for the pricepoint.
However, considering the ambience is nice and a Tecate Michelada is only $6, I'd definitely return for drinks.
Always love Malo! Burnt Habanero Cream Salsa for the win!!!!!
The food was delicious! We started with the guacamole which was spicy and chunky. The chicken mole was authentic and shrimp diablos were spicy and tasty. Will definitely go back when I'm in that area.
Menu was a bit limited. patio very dark
Carnitas and steak were good. Shrimp flautas didn't seem to really have much shrimp. Nothing to rave about but ok
Rooster margarita was great! Just a 3/5 for overall.
I've been here several times before, but mostly for happy hour in the bar. This last time in the main room the service was slow - almost non-existent (it was 7 PM in a Sunday and the dining room was only 1/3 full). Waited several minutes for our drink order to be taken and then several more minutes for our server to appear. He showed up once more after were were practically done. We had to flag down a food runner to ask for our him. The food itself was "Meh". Beans were salty and rice tasted overcooked/stale. I expect more from this place. But maybe that's my fault.
